Dividends are when a company distributes a portion of its profits to its shareholders. If you don't know what the word 'shareholder' means, click here to watch part 1, and then come back to this video.
So anyways, say we own a share in a company, let's call this company Soni's Shawarma, and assume it's a restaurant chain that has thousands of restaurants across the country.
Soni's Shawarma is doing its thing, you know, selling great tasting shawarmas to people like you and me and making a profit. And since shareholders are owners, it makes sense that we get a part of this profit. Soni's Shawarma will distribute a small portion of its profit to shareholders, and this, is what we call a dividend. So let's say that Soni's Shawarma pays a quarterly dividend of 25 cents.
let's make this rectangle represent my one share of Soni's Shawarma. So with this one share, I will be getting 25 cents from Soni's Shawarma, every quarter year, which is 3 months. I get this 25 cents, for being a shareholder, which is not a laborious task, you just buy shares, and, well, chill, relax, continue on with your life, you get the point.
So this one share got me 25 cents, in 3 months. Say I hold this share for a year, and since this dividend is issued quarterly, that means I get 4 payments of 25 cents, so I've just gotten a dollar in dividends.
Realistically, it's very unusual for someone to invest in a company, and buy only 1 share, so say I have 100 shares of Soni's Shawarma, that means in a year, I make $100. Say I have a 1000 shares, in a year, that's a thousand dollars.
$1000 for what? $1000 for being a shareholder. So basically, chilling. (insert music here). Now the longer you chill, I mean, uhh, hold your shares for, the more money you will make. If 100 shares of Soni's Shawarma give me $100 in dividends every year, and I hold this company for 2 years, that's $200, if I hold it for 5 years, that's $500, if I hold it for 10 years, that's a $1000 and so on and so forth. In the real world, dividend paying companies usually increase their dividends often, so if you hold for a long time, the dividends will usually increase.
So before we end the video, you need to know a few things. Dividends can be paid in cash or in stock, which is when the company will issue extra shares instead of cash. But you can always sell those extra shares for money if you really want the cash that bad.
Next thing, not all companies pay dividends to their shareholders. These companies may be reinvesting every penny back into the business, or may not even be making a profit.
Last thing, companies can pay dividends quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. So that means once every three months, or once every 6 months, or once every year.
So that's about it, make sure to watch the online tutorial for checking dividends as a follow-up to this video. Thank you and goodbye!

I've got a question. So a corporation may increase or decrease the dividends given to its shareholders, but do they increase/decrease before payment or after. For example. If a company needs to pay de dividends in 1 month, but during that month they do not make a profit, in fact, they lose money, do they still pay the same amount of dividends or can they lower it whenever they want.
@SoniBrosInvesting
@SoniBrosInvesting 4 года назад
So a company’s board of directors will meet to discuss its finalized income statement usually every quarter (every 3 months). Once they review the financials and realize that they have excess earnings, then they will declare the dividend and then pay it out.

@SoniBrosInvesting

Holding shares is when you purchase a company's shares and keep possession of it for however long you want. For example, if I bought 100 Amazon shares right now, then I would say "I hold 100 Amazon shares." Hope this helps! Let me know if have any other questions. :) Thanks for the comment!

Is the amount of dividend constant? Also can a company retrieve or cancle its dividend all of a sudden ?
@SoniBrosInvesting
@SoniBrosInvesting 3 года назад
No, the dividend is not constant. The company CAN decide to pay out its dividend one quarter and then not pay one the next quarter if they want too. So yeah, it's the company's decision at the end of the day.

If stock drop in price, does dividend pay will be lower too?
@SoniBrosInvesting
@SoniBrosInvesting 5 лет назад
Dividends are not directly related with the stock price. Companies choose how much they want to pay shareholders in dividends. Don't forget that stock prices fluctuate every second on the market. Dividends do not follow that same principle. It's a specific amount that the company decides to give its shareholder and can change when the company wants to change it. Heck, a company can stop giving dividends if they really wanted to. Hope this helps! Thank you for the comment :)

Hello. I'm a bit confuse. Does dividend "repays" the shareholders it's shares? Or is it like "free money" like say income for shareholders? I'm sorry. Confuse.
@livin3179
@livin3179 9 лет назад
HiatusMobs Dividends are like free money as in income OR free shares, which you can either sell off for their cash value or double up and re-invest in the company.
@jackarf1
@jackarf1 8 лет назад
Think of dividends as an "I-owe-you" note. You lend the company money (buying shares which gives them more money to work with) and in return they pay you a percentage of their profits back. Sometimes they'll pay you back in cash and sometimes by giving you more shares (which you can turn around and sell as Isaac Simpson mentioned) or simply keep them and hope to get more dividends on those shares as well.

guys can anyone help me out with this, for e.g i buy 100 shares in a company and one share is worth 10$ so that costs me 1000$ now the company pays dividends monthly and the percentage is 1.75% so that gets me 17.5 $ per month. Now the company pays me 17.5$ for 57 months now the total amount of the dividend is = to the share price, will the company still continue to pay me dividends or not ? your response would be greatly appreciated :)
@Sam-wl3fk
@Sam-wl3fk 6 лет назад
as long as the company is making profit they will continue to pay you dividends some companies have a record of 40 and 50 years paying consecutive dividends means it's been 50 years they pay dividends to shareholders and still are however your calculation are totally wrong! 1st few companies pay a monthly dividend the least being quarterly so at 1.75% it's gonna be way more than 57 months to double your amount well at least multiply 57 by 3=171 months or around 14 years to double also take into consideration no stock stays 14 years at same price they go up and down all the time and so the dividends will keep changing
