So is there a difference between a transient and a surge?

Hey, "Transients" is a broad term used to describe any temporary changes in the system parameters including voltage and frequency. "Surges" are typically used to describe power events that cause disturbance in the voltage waveform. Surges can last for a longer duration and are usually observed as a sharp sag/swell followed by a decay pattern. In this sense, surges are a subset of transients. However, please note that the term "transients" and "surges" are widely used interchangeably and most commercial applications do not distinguish between them. Hope this answers your question. :)
