When I was homeless, I missed hot meals, and someone told me about how you can buy a pizza at 7-11 with food stamps and they'll heat it up after purchasing it so you can use your food stamps and get something hot to eat.

Don't let shelter staff find out that you have a storage unit, if you have one. I was talking one of my shelter mates about something I had in there and a staff overheard. They bugged me about getting rid of it because I had it for a while and I was homeless. The unit was very cheap at the time and I could pay for it fine, not to mention that staff didn't have anything to do with it. They didn't want me to have it because I was homeless, heavily impliying that because I was homeless I don't deserve to keep my stuff, like its a punishment for being homeless.

I personally have been homeless since last March after being abused and taken advantage of by my loved ones after receiving crippling PTSD from a series of workplace incidents. I live in my car in an unmarked alley, so no one owns it and it can’t be tracked, easier to keep away from the cops. I visit the Starbucks everyday to charge electronics and use the internet to further my disability case with both the SSA and my employer. Local social services try their best, but the city gives them nothing, so it’s waiting forever for things that don’t really matter. The biggest take away from my experience so far is. That sharing my homelessness with others causes them to pull out resources I have exhausted or been denied from and get very surprised on how hard it actually is to get out of homelessness, even for someone like me, with all the checkmarks for things that would put me first in line for resources. People are usually homeless for a while because the local governments will never be funded enough to even make a dent. They will try with a smile, but it honestly feels like a slap when you suffer so much for the longest time only to either get or not get something you needed so long ago.

I was homeless for 5 months but that was 17 or so years ago. It was not fun, but I had it far better than most homeless people. Great video. Thank you for sharing our stories. Not all homeless people are homeless because of drugs, alcohol or mental issues. I was already in debt and then lost my job because of the downsizing. My 5 months of homelessness ended when my friends helped me find work and get back on my feet. I am out of debt, live in a nice home and enjoying my job. When I see a homeless person, I try to help out. I know what they are going through. They are human and their lives are worth it. To the religious people, don't tell them Jesus loves them until you are able to love them too, not just by words but by action.

It's really sad how dehumanized homeless people have become. I don't understand why someone would get angry at another for being in an extremely vulnerable position that is often caused by factors beyond their control. I'm glad you're safe now.

@@onionbubs386 you are right. From my homeless experience it humbled me that we all could face things we never thought we would experience. Thank you for commenting. I am so much better now. Most people I know personally are shocked when I tell them I use to be homeless. I made it from being homeless to joining the working middle class. Being homeless was not just scary but extremely depressing because you will feel that the world has abandon you as a person.

Something I wish people would realize about homelessness is a lot of homeless people did not start homeless and often had a real normal life and were just normal people once upon a time so if you see a homeless person with a nice car or a nice laptop or a nice phone it's often one of the things they were able to take with them from their normal life before they lost everything. I had an iPhone while homeless because it was a gift from my mom from about 3 months before I was kicked out of the house for being gay. The amount of times I was accused of stealing it or not actually being homeless was ridiculous to the point that I was relieved when someone stole it
@aSipOfHemlocktea
@aSipOfHemlocktea 7 месяцев назад
Another thing I wish people would know is the amount of homeless people that are homeless because they were kicked out for being lgbtqia+ as teens. When you're a kid and you have no money and no paperwork it's pretty hard to get your life together especially when you're a teen who is kicked out before you had time to learn important things

I work for the railroad. Apparently the biggest unspoken rule of homelessness is to immediately trash the area you move to. Trash should be at least 3 feet deep in all directions.
@tateranus4365
@tateranus4365 7 месяцев назад
the other day I decided to do some exploring on my quad, the railroad tracks near my house are almost never used, the trail that runs next to them is fenced off but there is a gap just big enough to squeeze my quad through, I get through it just fine, I decide to head on the tracks because some equipment was parked on the trail and I didn't want to risk scratching it up, I end up trying to get up on the railroad tracks (they are like 5 or 6 feet above this trail on gravel), I get a pretty good run up, halfway up the quad runs out of steam, it gets stuck in the gravel, I try and floor it, the tires just spin, I try reversing it out, they just spin in the other direction, I try lifting it up, it does no good, I try digging it out, finally as I am about to go call my mom to get the truck (if I hooked a few ratchet straps together it would probably be long enough) I look and turns out it was in 2 wheel drive this whole time, I put it in 4 wheel drive and it gets unstuck in no time, I promptly headed back to the house, you can probably still see where I did it and this was like 6 months ago... I never got caught and since the gravel was too big to leave any kind of tracks they probably couldn't link anyone to it... yeah I definitely was tresspassing but to be fair I have been riding for over a decade, I could race quads if I wanted to, I can keep control of my quad (which ain't even a racing quad, its a honda rancher 400) at 35 miles and hour, yes I can take turns on it at like 30 or 35 miles and hour...

The shelter I was staying at fed me, so I never went hungry. Still, people would offer me food. I would accept it with gratitude, not because I really needed it but because I didn't want to seem ungrateful. They were going out of their way to be kind and the least I could do was to accept their kindness and thank them.

I have been homeless and I totally agree with helping each other rather than robbing. I came in a new town and found a couple sleeping in a bus stop. When they told me how hungry they were i used my last coins to buy them just one burger which they shared. Another day another hustle. We are all people.

Generally I avoid others out there but if I do interact with them I treat them with respect. We’re all struggling to get by out here. A little kindness goes a long way. But if I can avoid people I will. I also couch surf when I can but that’s not always an option

Can't get to the story submission link for some reason. So... There are many different types/levels/forms of homelessness. There's the stereotypical, living and sleeping on the streets, in a tent, begging for change. There's living in a shelter, living in a car, couch surfing, living in motels, and more. Each come with their own unique set of "homeless problems." I lived in my car. When it was cold I hung out in places like the community college, laundromats, truck stops, and places like that, during the day, or when it was nice enough I would just hang out in the car. Everyone sees everything. Because everything you have is in your car. Unless you have a trunk. The car breaking down or flat out completely shitting the bed, was my biggest fear. It was almost end of the world scenario for me. I had friends/family I could stay with here and there. But I mostly only asked on extremely cold nights. I was fine until it got below -10 fahrenheit. But if my car broke down, I could technically go to my parents, but they didn't know I was living in my car. It was also just a shitty, toxic, stressful, loud house. Hence why I chose to live in my car. I did have a job. I had two jobs. Just not enough to pay rent and apartment related bills. I was a college student, And I have disabilities but was not getting social security and working full time just wasn't an option.

I was homeless on and off since I was 19, I am considered an elder because of that even now that I have my own place. I am going to be 35 in May. I was the one that helped everyone else secure their tents or haul food from the food banks, that kinda stuff. I was even the one that would check peoples food to make sure that it hadn't gone bad because somehow a lot of the people that were homeless around me didn't know when something smelled wrong. my immedate group shared meals out and starbucks when we all got paid, sometimes we would take breathers in a hotel for a couple days if we needed to destress.

12:53 If you're "too good" for something, what are you doing on the street in the first place? After all, society has (very generally speaking) deemed you to not be good enough to have a home. Homelessness should by all means be a humbling experience for anyone. If you went blind (to use an analogy) you probably wouldn't consider yourself "too good" to use a cane or a guide dog. You still have to navigate the world, if that means you need more help than others, take whatever help comes your way.
@maym8849
@maym8849 7 месяцев назад
Homelessness can happen to anyone at any time for the most random reasons. I pray you never find yourself randomly struck by a tragedy that leaves you with no other option. Sometimes it's not "society" who deems anything, it's your parents who change their minds overnights or your roommates who suddenly stop paying rent or your business partner who steals everything and bankrupts you
@nicholasharvey1232
@nicholasharvey1232 7 месяцев назад
@@maym8849 Indeed. Just as anyone can go blind for the most random reasons (freak accident, disease, etc.) It's about needing more help than the average person, and not being too proud to ask for it or accept it.

Good enough has nothing to do with it. Either you work and pay for for housing, or you don't.
@nicholasharvey1232
@nicholasharvey1232 7 месяцев назад
@@yesterdayseyes This is why I put "very generally speaking" in the first comment, as it's quite an over-generalization to say that the homeless are "inferior" to the rest of (housed) society. But that is how society usually judges them. Yes, some are homeless due to their own poor decisions (gambling, drugs, etc.) but how about those who lost their homes due to, say, natural disasters, abusive parents, or a layoff. Like I said, it must be a humbling experience and you'd have to be a fool to feel as if you're "too good" for anything that could ultimately get you back off the street.
@seanvanderstruys5196
@seanvanderstruys5196 7 месяцев назад
@@yesterdayseyesthere are 3 basic fundamentals in life, shelter, food and water. Everybody deserves and needs all 3 to survive. A lot of these stories involve people with some degree of mental illness. Society has let them down. We need to help them as much as we can. You are not better than a homeless person, you are just in a better place . If someone asks for help, help them.
