Inverted fullbacks are genius because there will be more ball control, attacking oppurtunities and defending capabilities but it really must put a heavy toll on the players.

A team that has some capable wingers can easily exploit the spaces left behind though Maybe they will have more possession, but when the other team has the ball, a counter attack might be dangerous
@SoneNando
@SoneNando 8 месяцев назад
@@mohamedaboelfotouhOverlapping fullbacks also leave space behind, the teams who employ more aggressive fbs think it's worth the risk for the extra offensive capabilities. And they're really just for helping the buildup, probably won't stay in that position a whole lot and you need extra players if you're trying to get through a high/mid block.

Trent isn't very good on the ball, that's a misconception. His carrying, dribbling and press resistance are all a bit mediocre. His creativity and passing is peerless, tho. If he can get more time maybe he can be something special in that role but he's definitely not there yet.

As you continue to learn about football and try to understand, you will realize how much you don't understand, I don't stop watching videos of tactical analysis and game analysis and reading books that analyze the tactics of the coaches, and from time to time I tactically analyze games for myself down to the last detail, for about five years now, and as I Learning more about football and seeing more I realize that actually I understand almost nothing, that's what's beautiful about football, it can be the simplest game in the world, but if you study it enough, it's also one of the most complicated, from philosophies to tactics, and positions, to rules. So this sport is so amazing, because everyone can see it in a different way and love it from a different angle.

I would disagree and say he has advanced quite significantly in his defence recently (though further improvement is certainly welcomed), but as an inverted fullback, he could see more improvement in his ball control when operated as a double pivot, especially in tight spaces. As a proof, this season TAA faired surprisingly well against Mitoma, but we have already seen quite a few major mistakes from him when heavy touches in the midfield proved costly

Inverted fullbacks are all about midfield supremacy. Pep started using the far sided fullback and having them tuck inside in front of the center backs to create better numbers in possession in their defensive third. And yes, people are complaining about wingers exploiting, but it’s as simple as the center back dropping into the exploited fullbacks space and the fullback drops straight back to goal to fill the gap created by center back. Really not that complicated as long as the center back is forcing the winger wide and away from their goal.

This works for counter attacks as the full backs cover the wings in a short space of time plus there are 5 defensive players around stopping to counter.

Invented to deal with the numerical disadvantage cause by low blocking opponents. They'll have 5 defenders back while you will have at most 4 attackers at most in their third (the front 3 and possibly 1 midfielder). Inverted fullback allows you to maintain numbers in the middle of the field while also having numbers in attack.

Interestingly the naming convention on the newly released Football Manager 2024 has IWBs doing the role that this video outlines (and has done for a few years now seeing as I've used them on FM21) but also this year has introduced a new Inverted Full Back role which is a little bit more like what Guardiola has been doing with Kyle Walker for a few years - shuttling inwards but still very much on the defensive stratum, forming a back 3 if the other FB/WB has pushed forward. As for the naming convention, it dates wayyy back to the old 2-3-5 formation. As things changed and settled to a back 4 over the years, the names for the old roles stuck, despite the roles themselves being drastically different. It's the same reason Centre Backs are still sometimes referred to as Centre Halves. The 2-3-5 formation is also why we have particular numbers for particular roles on the pitch that shouldn't look like they make sense. ----------------1----------------- ------------2-------3------------ Full Backs ---------4------5-------6------- Half Backs --7-------8----9----10-------11 Right wing, inside right, centre forward, inside left, left wing So they're called full backs because originally they were the deepest defenders - fully back. Eventually one of the half backs dropped into the defence between the two full backs - the centre half. Later another one did it and the back 4 was born, which is why the trad back 4 numbering is often 2-4-5-3 or 2-5-6-3 - essentially the left half or right half and the centre half dropped into the defensive line - hence centre half; full back.

Wingbacks are far more attacking, whereas fullbacks can get forward on occasion or based on instructions, wb are expected to get high up the pitch all the time, giving width and putting crosses in

Fullbacks comes from the old-school use of 3-2-5 (WM) formations back in the 50s, 60s etc. The fullbacks were the two furthest back, with the half backs (right, left and centre) operating in what we call midfield. Look at Spurs when they won the double in 61. The centre half moved back to form a back 3. Blanchflower & Mackay remained as the half-backs. Wingbacks are an adaption of these as formations changed and we developed back-3 formations
@racerdeth
@racerdeth 8 месяцев назад
@@davidc1721 the WM was the formation that came after the 2-3-5, when the centre half dropped back. 3-2-2-3 looks like a W and an M. The "2-3-2-3" of the 2-3-5 is an M-M!
@customch33s32
@customch33s32 8 месяцев назад
This gives you a nice 5 man attack leaves 3 people in yhe middle to stop immediate counter threats, and the center backs have to pick up the long balls. Guess that is the deciding factor, you have 2 center backs to stop the long balls. Works great against a lone striker in a 4-4-1-1 and such positions, less good if they have wingers

You know, to my uneducated brain, inverted full backs are more natural compared to "normal" fullbacks like Reece James. Normal fullbacks run the length of the pitch and as a result injured more often and it seems to require a more varied skillset at the top level both attacking and defending Inverted fullbacks by comparison is defending and being part of the midfield, more likely defensive midfield and forward passing. It was mentioned that the inverting is in addition to the rest, which seems like a lot but they do pay these guys good money for our entertainment. Still, to my "uneducated mind on football tactics and strategy" inverted fullbacks feel more natural and the ones to provide the overlapping in wide areas they do a role given to attacking midfielders.
