This is the best explanation! I had the thought that, if there had been no Prohibition and speakeasys the style of expanding by improv might not have come about! And without Jazz blacks and whites would not have broken down the walls of segregation as well as they did! You are a genius player! Wow.

The honky tonk piano sounded amazing. Distortion before the electric stuff. I’m a blues guitar player who is always looking to steal from honky tonk and boogie Woogie 😂

The shared hands approach reminds me of the way chords are spread out in four part harmony similar to Bach chorales.
@JeremySiskind
@JeremySiskind 2 года назад
Definitely! You can think about soprano, alto, tenor, bass when learning the shared-hands voicings (although you don’t have to)

I'm a hardcore stride fan and I usually don't fancy improvisation because it can drag on, but when its done on par to melodies of fats waller it's a joy to listen to. You casually smashed that ain't misbehavin.

I don't play any instrument and wish I had been encouraged as a child to learn about music theory and practice an instrument. However, I enjoy listening to a variety music, mainly the heavy rock stuff but bands such as ELP and Keith Emerson's style have me captivated by his improvisational style. Now I have learned about Stride, Honky Tonk etc., from you Jeremy, I can now try to listen out for the subtle differences in music. A great explanatory video😀. Thanks from the UK.

Great video. Learned a lot. Admittedly, I have never liked listening to 'Shared Hand' style, as you term it. It is the one used by a lot of cocktaii lounge pianists. I dislike using just the center of the keyboard only. Sounds like the piano player is making up for having a weak left hand, unable to play more complex styles. It is rather boring.
@JeremySiskind
@JeremySiskind 4 месяца назад
You're right that a "Shared hands" style brings the pianist towards the center of the piano, but they can always decorate between voicings in the upper and lower registers.
@jalbert222
@jalbert222 4 месяца назад
re: "...but they can always decorate between voicings in the upper and lower registers." You are right. They can, but the rarely do :) The other thing a lot of piano players do, is play loudly. My mother, a professional musician, always maintained, 'those who do play well, play loud'.
