I've used a flat setup for around 4 months when I first started skating, then moved onto a full rocker when I wanted to learn slalom. I've had a full rocker for over a year now and I use it for slalom, roller hockey and the roller disco where I work. I work with a colleague who is a roller figure skater and one time at the disco we were bored and so dared each other to try out a pair of inlines we give out to customers. His disadvantage was that he now had to skate with inlines (as opposed to skates/quads he's used to), and mine was that I had a flat setup and a heel brake again. It also didn't help that the wheels weren't too smooth (we don't lubricate the bearings often so inexperienced customers won't shoot off with no control), so it was quite a workout to keep a steady speed. My colleague struggled with the soft boot (as opposed to his tough leather) and the extra lean, and when he tried going backwards he just fell back. To me the boot was a lot softer than what I'm used to, and the flat setup was ridiculous; no forward-back roll is incredibly obvious when it's not there. They also felt like they really stuck to the ground and were hard to control, and when I tried going backwards I realised why my colleague fell; the rear wheels just locked up on him so to make up for it I had to lean forward at a ridiculously sharp angle. Once I got back on my skates, it felt weird to have the rocker roll again, but after 2-3 laps I was back at it. Flat rocker may be good for beginners, but as soon as you want more control or manoeuvrability I highly recommend rocketing your setup.

Back in the day the skates had the ability to remove a piece in the frame flip it so the rear and front wheels would rocker up . I wish I could find a pair of older roller blades with the metal frame geared towards this rocker system rather than change wheels ..

I still have my pair from the early 90's. Think they are mostly plastic though. The wheels turned into jello a few years ago.
@chloerobinson999

lots of brands have these axels you can swap to rocker the wheels. seen Endless powerslide and seba have simalar.. im not an expert by any means but im sure there are axels you can buy and keep the 4 same wheels. much cheaper than new wheels or new frame. also just keep the front and back wheels on the front and back when you rotate wheels. they will wear down more giving you a natural rocker I have two old pairs with huge natural rockers

My Roces skates have the same size wheel but the far back and forward wheel are lifted up a bit because of how the frame is made.

Keep it up !

Front rocker here (just one wheel), faster and less wobbly. The problem I have with full rocker is that it makes legs work so much more just to maintain balance, making me tire faster during regular skating and doesn't really add much benefit if I want to go mostly forwards.
@TiagoInlineSkater
@TiagoInlineSkater 7 лет назад
clray123 I still didn't try the front rocker yet :) just added to my to-do list :) yes! that's true, at the beggining, my legs were always super tired because this setup makes you use more muscles/ or makes you use them in a different way; just to keep balance. after using this setup for 2 years, my legs got stronger, and they don't feel tired at all, even after skating 8- 10 hours with that configuration. I personnally find this setup more fun than the others because of everything I can do with it. but this is my personnal opinion :)

I know this is 5 years late, but thanks for the advice. My 1992 Rollerblade Lightnings w/ Banana rocker setup just died and I'm researching new skates. I can't believe skates don't have that feature, and was considering just going with the flat setup. I'll find a rocker solution.

@@andrewwinger4970 I recently got the "FR Skates UFR 90 Intuition Skates" and like them a lot. They are rockered less than the Seba Igor, and I think I like it that way. The slightly larger 90mm size felt unexpectedly good for me, too!

Hey Tiago, how come you're mentioning 72 & 76 sizes, and not the more standardized 80s? Shouldn't matter if it's 76 - 80 - 80 - 76, right? And what about rocker frames, does it matter if you change the wheels or the frame?

If you have a frame you can rocket the insert rather than the wheel you can still keep the brake .. I loved the original rocker frames with a break ..
@Martins-Shaves123
@Martins-Shaves123 7 лет назад
I tried banana rocker and loved it, tight turns great , but at higher speed very unstable and tremendous wear on the middle wheels , you can't change them over or you lose the rocker ! after a few weeks all the wheels became the same diameter . Fabulous maneuvering , bad wear .

Original Rollerblades of the 90's had a simple method to get a rockered setup, a barely-rockered or non-rockered setup by adjusting the axle positions. It was brilliant. I think it was a HUGE mistake to move away from this system. I think it was a key part of why rollerblading has dropped in popularity.
@TiagoInlineSkater
@TiagoInlineSkater 3 года назад
It's still being done today, like with the Katana frames from Powerslide; both with 3 & 4 wheels. FR skates also do that, same with Flying Eagle. These frames have their advantage , and are also very annoying with these bolts . My main frames have this system, but I'm moving back to pre-rockered frames since I only skate rockered. ✌️much faster when it comes to rotating or changing wheels

Yeah, skating downhill on rockered setup is dangerous for your pants. you can shit them, i mean.
@sequoiagrovemetal

just keep your stance, let them swerve, as long as your stance (knee,hip,shoulder) remains frontal they will average out straight.

lol I was looking at new inliners with rockered mode, and looked up these videos , and realized thats what I need since Im a figure skater, and use my inliners for transportation but find it annoying that I cant do curved and turns like on ice skates. Then I realized that my inliners ( salomon TR9) has built in rockered mode, I just had to turn my bolts on the middle wheels. there's an arrow on them up/down. No shit those were the top model back in the day (1999 I believe I got them). went 15km on them today. feels much more like ice skated. they respond to my hips now. the control at high speeds is not an issue since Im used to that on ice skates. I figure it trains my ankles much better now.

When I started to inline skate a few months ago, the flat setup really felt too stiff for my liking. Discovered the full rockered banana setup and really enjoyed it. I don't think I can ever go back. Though I'm interested in trying a tri state sometime. How different is the maneuverability between the two, and is a tri skate worth rockering or it shouldn't be done? btw you're videos really help me! Thanks. always look forward to your videos. : )

I'm mainly an aggressive skater, but now that I'm in my mid 30's I picked up some Seba FR1s and I really love the cruising free skate. I'm not going to like though... I wanna skate those cones like you do. It just seems so nimble and ninja like. I have not rockered my setup yet, I'm probably going to do it w/ some 76mm wheels on the outside and 80mm on the inside. Looking forward to the instructional video!

My skates have inserts in the wheel bolt hole that can rotate to adjust how high the wheels are in the frame. Not sure if this is normal. They are from the early 90's

Rollerblade Maxxum 100 uses a 3X100 + 1X90 setup with the 2nd wheel being the 90. The frame is leveled though. So, all four wheels are on the ground. I think they just did this to keep the boot lower to the ground and the frame a bit shorter. Any advice as to how to go about rockering such a frame?

Olá Tiago! I purchased a pair of rockered 243mm frames for an 80mm rockered setup but the shop called me and said that they no longer had the rockered frame in stock and will not be getting it any more. I already have my full set of 80mm wheels and really don't want to go through the hassle of sending 4 back and getting 4x76mm wheels to make a rockered set up with my flat frame. I was thinking that maybe I could skate around for a while with just my front and rear wheels in the frame for a while until they wear down to make them smaller (maybe help the wear along its way by doing some slides) and make the rockered set up I'd like. I have no other options for rockering my set up as I have only a pair of aggressive skates besides my one pair of powerslide imperials and it's my first experience with a rockered set up. What are your thoughts?
