I ran my own business for 16 years. Some company trying to buy their way into the market bought my company right before covid. I can confirm what Tim is saying 100%. It's good advice. In my industry, a single piece of equipment can range from $5000 - 15,000USD. A segment of the industry was a race to the bottom with pricing. People were doing all this work and charging $400-500 for the day. It was stupid. Charge more. People will pay it. The only thing Tim missed which is really important. If you ignore practices (doctors, lawyers, dentists, etc. -- they're structured differently), 80% of partnerships fail within 5 years. Never, under any circumstances, should you ever enter a partnership. One person owns the business. The second person becomes a highly compensated employee. You aren't going to be the 20% that survive beyond 5 years. And of that 20%, I don't know the survival rate after 8 or 10 years. My guess is it's not great.

That is true. Partnerships are messy. So is sharing equity. Pay for what you need. Don’t partner for it.

My uncle was a sculptor and ran into the same issue with people not charging what they are worth. I think that’s an independent business problem rather than a tech or consulting issue

Thank you Tim, I experienced most of those situations for years, and you are 100% right. Now, what to do to attract clients, how can companies find me?
@IAmTimCorey
@IAmTimCorey Год назад
Get to know people. Who you know will be a bigger influence on getting clients than what you do with marketing. For example, go to meetups for developers. Get to know them. Then, when they need additional help at work, they know who to call. Get involved with a non-profit. Work with other people and get to know them as you volunteer. Those relationships will make a big difference. Then, get your current customers to help spread the word. Give them a discount or finder's fee if they refer someone to you.

@@IAmTimCorey Hi Tim, can you also specifically talk about desktop software? For eg. what is the best way to advertise and gets the words out so people know your desktop software exists. Thanks.

Situation of every person starting a business is not at all same. These general suggestions are okey but useless in most cases.
@IAmTimCorey
@IAmTimCorey 2 года назад
Nope, not useless. I have watched dozens of businesses succeed, and even more businesses fail. I've watched what others did, and I've implemented the things I saw that worked. I've also learned things from trial and error in my business. I have taken many suggestions out of business books, tested them, and determined which ones worked. So, that's what I've done to verify and validate that these suggestions will be very valuable to follow. Now, you say these suggestions are useless in most cases. That's easy to say, but how do you know? Have you validated that they don't work? Have you tested them in multiple business situations?

Capital - that's my number one priority, without it, no business to start with.
@IAmTimCorey
@IAmTimCorey 2 года назад
I did. My total investment in my business was $75 (Camtasia and a USB mic). If you count the existing PC I used, it was $1,075. I worked for years on my now business in the evenings and on weekends. The money I made from doing videos was reinvested. I never again used personal money or outside investment to boost my business. Even now with three employees, a dedicated studio, and more, I have never taken a loan or outside money. The business pays for everything with cash or it doesn’t get done. I think the myth that businesses need investors, large amounts of startup capital, or loans is dangerous.
