i always wanted to know about Ilek Vad. Seems like a really intense dream city yet we know next to nothing about it, except that it's wondrous even by Dreamland standards and has an opal throne.
I'm working on a table top Call of Cthulu investigation into the Dreamlands, this was really helpful in getting a better sense of what the Dreamlands are. Thanks Mr. H XD
I liked using the idea of people getting stranded in the dreamlands, or even being taken an kept there via some method as dream slaves, as a hook for players going into the dreamlands. The idea of a occultist in the higher end of society calling on a group to investigate his children's strange state of being in a unwakeable trace or sleep, which could take them thru investigating the occultist's tomes an things he had in his home, to also investigating if there is something else at work in the Dreamlands. I am working on a lovecraftian setting and adventure in which the world of the setting is covered in veils that obscure aspects of reality and perception of those looking thru them, but thru several methods people can pierce of pass thru the veils, but will find out that the veils were placed to both hide the old one's from the perception of people an the people from the perception of the old ones.
Jordan Ferguson Dude, in that case, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended reading/listening to the (audio)book, Johannes Cabal: The Fear Institute by Jonathan L. Howard. It'll really give u a good understanding of the Dreamlands.
They're one of the few unfortunate people who came to the Dreamlands not through psychically sensitive dreaming but through an active portal created by a Dreamlands creature trying to get home. Now if you die in the dream you die for real...Thanks for all the great comments fellow Mr. H and Lovecraft fans ^^
It's not entirely clear if the gods of the Dreamlands are totally unable to interact with the physical world. Nodens, for instance, has been mentioned as interacting with the waking world, and it's implied (though not entirely confirmed) that the Great Ones themselves are the mythological gods of the ancient world.
Great commentary on the Dreamlands. As I almost always do, I learned something new by listening to your posts. I would love your thoughts and comments on Sandman, a comic book series written by Neil Gaiman. As I understand it, Gaiman was influenced by Lovecraft's work.
I do believe that there are actuall physical portals into the dreamlands. Ghouls are able to pass through to our world's grave yards to feast on corpses. Though they rarely do this as the grave sites of the gugs in the dreamland underworld are more fruitful.
Who's to say we don't live in the Dreamlands ? But then again some who believe in the multiverse, have an idea that our 'Universe ' is the center due to imagination. Not saying I put any stock in it, just find it an interesting theory.
Yeah I've been there once...with Hayley Williams of Paramore fame for some reason. We were surrounded by levitating monoliths and waterfalls that hung from gravity-defying isles. Felt like I was there for a week. Weird stuff.
I like to think that the dreamlands are the dreams of another being like Azathoth, maybe the gods from Azathoths dream are just unable to go there. Or unwilling to put up with competition from new gods.
I’ve got a crazy theory that the Dreamlands (or parts of them) used to be a part of the waking world, but somehow transitioned to the dream dimension. I need to reread Lovecraft’s works to see if I can find more evidence.
I used to have reoccurring dreams of finding a secret staircase in my basement. Every level would be identical to my basement, but gradually more dilapidated. Every time I had the dream, I would get deeper in levels. Eventually the levels just looked like caves, but the deeper I continued, I noticed an orange glow that would get brighter as I descendent. The deepest I ever got was I could start to hear noises, like whispering or far off muffled talking, I couldn’t understand what was being said. Where a staircase leading down should have been, there was an door that was slightly open. The orange light and noises were coming from the other side. I would start to gently push the door open to sneak a peak beyond the door.
I don’t know if I’ve been here specifically, but I had an interesting dream one. I was in a room set up like mine, but it was made of a grayish brown wood. On the nightstand next to the bed, I heard what sounded like a small puppy. When I saw it, it looked like it had part of its head removed and had part of a rag doll ‘s head stitched in its place, with a tiny button for an eye.
I’m a light sleeper so the dream land would be a waking distant memory unfortunately. This had me so fixed. Characters/progressive storylines are my thing but to simply explore this via Mr Hs vid, great stuff. A real surprise!
I often feel more awake when I'm asleep to the point where I've considered writing a dream walker series where a man who dreams possesses different versions of himself and others by transferring his consciousness in his sleep. Recording some of my more mundane and fantastical dreams.
enjoyed the video though i would have liked to know a bit more about the moon and the the beasts that live there , pretty much any sorta of insight on that location wouldve been amazing.
We are currently a team recreating the dreamland for our upcoming game based on HP Lovecraft, i cannot say anything more but some videos should start to be shown late this summer or early fall.
for me the dreamlands are like a phased version of all that exists just being realy madmans place with impossible buildings why would someone not wanna stay and learn its kultur and science
my idea the whole story was an acid trip This is my actual theory the dreamlands are a reality thought up by human dreams similar to how our many multiverses are the dreams of azathoth. The dreamlands are simply another layer of reality where humans are the azathoth. It is just it can stay intact when you wake up because there are billions of dreaming humans. While there is only one dreaming azathoth.
Here from bloodborne, always been a huge fan of lovecraft, I've read all the popular stories but hadn't heard of the dream cycle collection. The more I read about them, the more I realized Miyazaki has borrowed heavily from them for both bloodborne and elden ring. The giant sprawling castles In beautiful lands, horrible monsters that were once men, the common theme of dying then being reborn to enter the dream again, and of course the great ones. So fkn cool that my two favorite pieces of media and creators are so intertwined.
I do wanna go in there, take a smoke and watch the lucid environment, the challenge will be to approach the dark land. Love this Cthulhu Mythos videos, thanks.
If you can have your life span expanded then I’m up for dreaming to this place and never leaving, I mean it sounds like heaven but expect theirs actually layers to it and not just clouds lol. Mr H do you think you can do a video about the Necronomicon? Ps. Also the sunken city of R’yla.
It has been said that in the Dreamlands you can only get white bread, ribs, and drinks. Yet however slow change there may be, it seems to have come, for now one can obtain fried okra, nachos, sausage, and (oh the horror!) Cobb salad.
After watching this video the deaths in the Dreamlands reminds me of Nightmare on Elm Street. I wonder if Wes Craven ( sorry if I misspelled it ) was inspired by this as well when he created Freddie Krugger
I’ve always thought what if this was all real if you wanted people to not go looking for these monsters wouldn’t you tell them it all fake to keep them safe
I enjoyed it very much thanks as always Mr H your videos are great as always and yes if I could enter I would and yes stay as well and explore the dreamlands although climbing 700 steps of stairs is not something I am looking forward to 😁
There is something called Universes and multiverses and even hyperverses you see the "Dreamland"is a 4d dimension in which you can feel touch taste and DIE but it is risky tasks to even dream such a place because you will end up creating a inter-universal being in other words create yourself in that world but because it is 4D dimension it will be like lucid dreaming as it feels my advice "safe next to the guards or go where you see light"
Oh? It sounds possible. I know that in one of the stories Lovecraft ghostwrote, he basically confirmed the thing Danforth saw that drove him crazy was Kadath.
you know if someone was make this into a film it should be a sequel to the book , and instead of just simple foreseer protagonist it should Conan , just wants to see Conan go up against a Gug and night stalker amd save the ghouls from the black ship , it be such an epic adventure
Yeah if I lived in the Cthulhu Mythos Universe I would definitely try to enter the Dreamlands physically so that I may escape the horrors that plague the earth (I most certainly wouldn’t want to be on earth when the Deep Ones declare war on humanity or when the Stars Align and Cthulhu awakens), atleast in the Dreamlands I would have a very long life and could gain incredible power.
If I entered the Dreamlands and I had no real ties here on Earth I would stay. There are some parts of the Dreamlands it is said that are almost on par with Heaven. I would settle down in one of those places.
Come on Mr. H, just go ahead and give us your fanfic audiobook of the Cthulhu Mythos vs the Hellraiser Universe. i know you've already written it. LOL.
So before I knew who cthulhu was he appeared in one of my nightmares and I didn't know the name of who he was then the next day I was watching RU-vid and it was about top 10 creatures caught on camera and I saw the exact same thing as I did in my dream and today my friend told me about cthulhu and I looked at a picture of cthulhu and he look the same as the creature in my dream so I'm wondering if he can corrupt u somehow or can the dreamland mirror the place u live at????
hp lovecraft had to be woke or spiritually enlightened. This is literally the astral realm literally holy shit lol. I cant say how many times ive tripped on shrooms or dmt and have seen cosmic horrors similar to lovecrafts ideas way before i even knew of lovecraft. This is more than art
Looks like something out of Lord of the rings or dungeons and dragon's. Also I would venture into that realm cause why not then if I did end up dying at least I'd have gotten to see what not many people have ever seen. So yolo I'd love to fight creatures that are alot like ones in DnD. I probably end up taking over the south and live in that world attempt to dominate it.
Rashad D the dreamlands are part of h.p. lovecrafts cthulhu mythos and are more phantastical then his horror storys. The whole mythos was created in the 1920s in america
