had 2 pioneer old school brown tower 12 inch speakers from 1999 that had 12 woofers blown, replaced with cheap 150w rms hifonics Subwoofer.... got a dual 4 ohm sub wired to 8 ohm cause thats what the original was.... i know the max frequency i should send a sub said 500HZ (Manual said this... lol) but i said screw it... and wow they sound great and the bass was about double what it used to be... i listed to lot of rap and house music... and this is the way...dont even need a sub and it hits the lows that the speaker couldn't do before.... i still love my oem vegas i have but these pioneer are now shocking... i guess its all about what you listen to and what you want from speaker...lol

I have seen this done with lots of different speakers and if it sounds good to you then just enjoy them, they are your speakers. My concern when putting subwoofers or any other replacement driver is the changes in the impedance curve. If the change is making the impedance too low it can be very demanding for some amplifiers. I know not everyone has the ability to measure a speakers impedance curve but my suggestion would be to keep an eye on the heat being generated by your amp. I'm not saying it is always going to drop the impedance, sometimes it may raise it.

You have completely overlooked the MOST important thing. CV speakers are all ported, and each cabinet and port are designed around the parameters of the woofer used, to tune the bass response of the box with that woofer, based on the Vas, Q, and free air resonance of the woofer.
@CuttinChopps
@CuttinChopps 2 месяца назад
But the point of the video demos the reason why NOT to just throw any driver in your existing cabinet. Your point being true still, falls under "other variables" he mentioned. His point was made without your level of granularity just fine.

Use Parts Express.

@white_goose9782 2 месяца назад
@@eugeniahobbs41What does Parts Express have to do with this? Yes they do sell woofers, ports and other components, but I doubt they have parts that matches every Cerwin Vega speaker configuration (or any speaker-brand for that matter).

I used to sweat building my subwoofer boxes exactly to spec and confirm with REW but since I started using a DSP I realized I can hit my target curve regardless of the raw measurement..now I can build the box a little small for more power handling and tune that accompanying peak out.

One effect is that you get a mesmerizing red ring in your woofer. You won't hear the difference after your woofer hypnotized you 😂😂

What you MUST know to replace a woofer in a 2-way / 3-way: (both old one and new one) 1.) Impedance 2.) Qts 3.) Required volume 4.) frequency response 5.) sensitivity / efficiency 6.) physical dimensions

EXPERIMENT: Put a good woofer in a speaker box with a 5.6 mh inductor and a resister (if needed to decrease woofer level). Then mount an open 5" full range driver on top of the speaker box (outside the box). For quick fix, use plasticine, modling clay or lots of Blue Tack to mount the open driver (sloped back a bit for more relaxed sound and more 3D). Wire the open FR driver up straight with no crossover/filter on it, with external wires connected in parl with the binding posts. Preferably 8 ohm drivers for more impedance with the parl connected whole signal FR drivers. Best sound ever, once you balance the driver levels. Most likely you won't have to resist the open FR drivers (hopefully). It's dipole and sounds like panel speakers (for so cheap). Medrange is so clean! And if there is any REVERB in a recording you are going to hear it! Try a sweep on it! 😅

I rebuilt a pair of stripped vs150's and 3 way 15"s cerwin vegas from the 70's in my own way using vmax 1998 subwoofers crossed over at 200 hz to the midrange (enlarged to 6.5's) and 2 khz from midrange to tweeter (1 inch compression drivers) they have excellent midrange which most of the stock 12 to 15 inch cv's lack. I just based the design and crossover from the loudspeaker cookbook which ALL professionals collected their knowledge into.

If we cannot get the TS parameters of the drivers, and information is as rare as unicorn poop, I am guessing the majority of Cerwin Vega out there are all measuring different with the majority repaired with any old part available. Still looking for the TS parameters of the bass drivers in the V-152.

I have D-2's and a subwoofer in a stereo 2.1 configuration (amp is a Fosi DA-2120C). I want to adjust the crossover of the D-2's tweeter and woofer because it seems there is not enough fidelity in the D-2's. Do you recommend any adjustable crossover filters or a totally different approach? Are these speakers not meant to be paired with a subwoofer? My speakers are properly placed away from the walls and each-other etc. Thank you for the Cerwin Vega videos!

Welcome back broseph. Mix and match can be fun sometimes. Xovers frequency in a driver can be manipulated with components. Capacitors or coils. You should do a follow up vid on xover mods to make it fit better sonically. The dip in the original design is also pretty awful. The woofer and mid do not have enough overlap.
@225savage0
@225savage0 2 месяца назад
Wrong. Of course you have to switch crossover parameters but if the driver itself isn’t close to the specs of the original it’s still going to be off. There’s no way to change the specs of a speaker. It can be something as simple as the size of the basket that’s on the speaker. A little smaller or a little bigger changes the tuning frequency of the enclosure. Anything that takes up space inside of an enclosure is factored in when building the enclosure to tune it. Then you have the whole list of other driver specs that you have to look at. Drivers don’t come with crossovers built into them. That’s something that has to be added. Weather it be passive or active.
@225savage0
@225savage0 2 месяца назад
But then again. I’m a jbl fanatic. I got most of my knowledge from over the phone talking to the engineers at Harman pro and from reading books. Them guys arnt verry knowledgeable are their? Nobody ever stole there designs did they? They didn’t re invent cinema sound in 1926 and win awards did they? I mean I did compete in a few car audio competitions as well but that doesn’t mean anything.

Would be really cool, if you tried to put a CLSC and a XLS woofer inside an older Cerwin Vega! Speaker. I've seen some people do it, and my brain just hurts from looking at it, it could be fun to see how much worse they actually become haha

i think the vs sound muddy and lackluster i have replaced woofers with much better sounding woofers form another brand but before i did that i took the woofer out and looked at the fs and qts of the woofer and matched them with some larger xmax woofers that i had laying around that made the sound fuller
@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas 2 месяца назад
Most of the VS speakers I have had in the shop tend to have that muddy sound to them for sure, you're right about that. 99% of the time it is caused by the poor quality x-over parts, considering their age they are all pretty much ready for a re-cap. When re-capped with decent quality caps the clarity improves greatly.

Hey bro, what is best place online to get nice quality black woodgrain veneer vinyl. I have a set of AT-15s I am reconditioning. Making them black woodgrain and silver screen covers and silver woodgrain speaker cut out boards. The silver woodgrain is okay. But the black I got the mil I'm just to thin and shit quality. Do you have a site you use and item # for black vinyl?
@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas 2 месяца назад
So far, for the black woodgrain veneer, all I have used is a PVC veneer from Amazon and like you mentioned it is very thin and I won't be using it again. Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you. If I find a better product I will make a video on it for sure because I want to put something better on my D9s.

Man, those CV's have some horrible high frequency curves. What is that like a 10dB spike around 15K. I'll never be buying any CV speakers for anything other than maybe a garage stereo. LOL.
@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas 2 месяца назад
Yeah, you don't see a lot of people using these speakers for critical listening that's for sure. Nobody ever claimed that CVs were an accurate speaker. Most of them were designed for one thing, high sensitivity and they succeeded. There are very few speakers out there that can match that other than speakers like Klipsch Heritage series, and they aren't very accurate either, but lots of people love them.
