Childhood apraxia of speech is a condition among young children, wherein the brain has difficulty processing plans for speech movement. It has a few possible causes, but most of the time, the actual reason can't be determined.
A child with childhood apraxia of speech often substitutes sounds (saying "wain" instead of "rain" or "tat" instead of "cat"), omits final consontants ("duh" instead of "duck"), stops the airstream (saying "tun" instead of "sun"), and simplifies sound combinations (saying "tar" instead of "star").
But is CAS always severe? While some children eventually grow out of the condition as they continue develop, many others do not. In such instances, the help of a speech and language pathologist is necessary.
