What are the Nephilim? Who were the sons of God and daughters of men? - Podcast Episode 120 

I believe that they were fallen angels. To me it makes a lot of sense and everything seems to fall into place with that interpretation. This is a fascinating subject! Someday we will all know the answers to our questions. Just trust the Lord 🙏

Perhaps the theory of it being fallen angels sleeping with human women would explain the myth of incubus. Very interesting conversation. I don't know which idea I lean towards. All I know is that God is good, and I'm thankful for his love and protection. ❤️ The Bible is so fascinating.

What's very different in mythology is that humans ended up worshipping the gods("nephilim") instead of worshiping the one true God, the creator of all beings, the Lord!

I lean toward the interpretation of this passage (and subsequent passages) that the "sons of God" were some type of angel who fell (metaphorically and spiritually) for the "daughters of men." This is largely based upon the Hebrew terms for each and the root of the Hebrew for "nephilim" (i.e., "fallen ones" or "cast down ones"). However, subsequent passages in the New Testament (such as in Jude and 2 Peter) seemingly reference this fall and its tie to the flood. In 2 Peter (and elsewhere) it seemingly links the cause of the flood with the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (i.e., unnatural affection). Consider Jesus' words about the "days of Noah" preceding the coming of the Son of Man. As this video mentions, Hollywood productions often show a world that is violent and vile to the point that it necessitated destruction and recreation. Yet, I (personally) think that the emphasis was on the loss of the natural way of God's design. Even today, things like homosexuality (unnatural affection), abortion (mothers literally consenting for the murder of their children), etc. are potentially akin to the days of Noah and the unnatural order of "sons of God" falling for the "daughters of men." There are some questions about the confusing passages in I Corinthians 11 about a "head covering" that is needed "because of the angels." I'd argue that this might very well have been the marriage veil -- referring to married "women" rather than "virgins" (a few chapters earlier) or "widows." I believe that the "covering" here (apart from hair) is referring to the ancient practice of a veil (or Badeken as a tradition dating at least to the captivity and diaspora) in which the virgin is covered by her husband to show that she is effectively "off the market" (so to speak). This is a sign as to the marital or "belonging" status of the woman -- just as a wedding ring might be today. Why this would be important to angels is unknown -- but it may be a reference to what happened before the flood. Don't forget: The fallen angels fell without the enticement of a sinful nature. Adam and Eve fell due to deception. We fall because of the nature that we're born with. Those angels fell because of something else. Some would argue that this is because of the potential of pride and the desire to love and be loved/wanted (even in a marital sense) akin to the sin of pride. If so, it is an unnatural affection and a reason why God must wipe out a world full of it (in the Flood) or a set of towns given to it (as in the case of Sodom, Gomorrah and the surrounding towns where Lot and his family lived). In the former, it was unnatural as angels desired the daughters of men. In the latter, it was men desiring angels. Still, you raise a great point that this is not something that we should lose sleep over. Our faith is not contingent in what made angels fall. Rather, it's in believing in (present tense) our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

It wouldn't be in God's word if He didn't want it there. My question might be, why did He want us to know about the Nephilim?

When I first herd of this in bible school as a child I imideitly thought of Greek Mythology and of Hercules and other "Mighty Men." in there stories.

I'm so glad you touched on many of the common thearies but also some of the "way out there" stuff. A small group of women in our church have recently started a bible study that seeks to re-read, so to speak, the word of God from a fresh and unadulterated perspective. We have been seeking why the Church seems to be living such a powerless and often unfulfilled life. Certainly not the life promised by Christ for believers. Obviously a very hugh subject...but one of the things we see is that the word of God is often misread or mistranslated or simply twisted to say what fits our needs instead of truly seeking God and His Face or thoughts on His creation and purposes thereof. And we feel the American Church, has been leaning so much on it's knowledge that we've forgotten who the Holy Spirit is, without which we cannot understand scripture. John 1. Anyway, sorry for the ramble but as I go back to the beginning of the Bible for some of our questions, I ran across the Nephilim question then stumbled on your podcast. My own personal opinion is if you have trouble with or can't get around who the ' sons of God ' were or whether or not angels can father children with earth women then you may as well give it up and quit. There is so much to this subject going on throughout at least the first half of the old testament that you're never going to get anywhere if you can't get over the first step. When I first started paying attention to Genesis 6 in the Bible when I had hardly read any of the Bible 50 years ago I instantly recognized the sons of God as angels and the daughters of men as human women. I was reading a King James Bible which said the children of such ( I indeed believed they managed to produce children ) were giants and I believed that meant really large people. I'm glad my Bible said giants because if it said ' Nephilim ' I wouldn't have known what that was. It also said they were the. ' heros of old and men of reknown ' which I instantly took as the origin of all the Greek God legends. The world is chock full ( or at least was ) of evidence of huge people having lived all over the globe in the distant past, the Bible gives a serious explanation as to where they came from.

The plain reading of Genesis 6 supports the fallen angels narrative ! How can anyone read sons of God as Seth descendants and the daughters of men as descendants of Cain !?!?! Seriously, now that is reading tons into the passage. I kind of think it IS important to understand this passage as fallen angels (Watchers) and not just a side issue. We are in spiritual warfare, folks. What gets me is how Christians accept the virgin birth of Jesus and His Resurrection, but when supernatural angels come on the scene, they freak out. The Great Naphaliym was a hybrid between a woman and Elohiym, the "Nephilim" was probably natural offspring of 2 Nephilim, The Men of Renowned is normally translated as Giants but the word is actually "Elioud", Witch witch is not a direct translation of the word Giants. This makes me think the same Elohim that took a Human wife, probably also took a second Nephiliym wife, after the Death of his first human wife. Go back to the original text and you will see the word for "son's of God" in that verse. Every other instance where that word is used references an actual angelic entity

I have a theory that the nephilims weren't limited to just giants. Who's to say that those nephilims couldn't have taken up other forms such as skin walkers or big foots that have been sighted throughout the world?

We may not understand how Jesus defied death & rose again, but we do believe every word of it because that's clearly what the Bible states. It also makes clear in Genesis 3 and 6 that the "Sons of God" "mated" w/human women and their offspring were giants. We may not understand how that's possible. Second, I don't feel we ever have to "walk back" what the Bible states when someone is offended by what the Bible states. It is only our place to believe the literal statements presented in God's Word. If someone is offended, we are still honor bound to uphold exactly what the Bible states.

When theory and speculation become a doctrine that people teach as truth it will always create confusion and division in the Body of Christ and that is exactly what Paul and Peter warned would happen if we hold on to Jewish myths and fables. We can sugar coat it all we want but bottom line is someone is wrong, and someone is teaching a lie. Genisis 6 is not an interpretation issue it is a distraction from what God has taught from the beginning and it can be easily summed up by 2 Corinthians 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.”17Therefore“Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. This is exactly what happened in Genesis 6. The context of chapters 4 and 5 show this to be true. Here we have two groups of people, Cains line who had been banished from the presence of the Lord and Seth's line who called on the Lord. If we study both of these lineages, you will find that there were two men named Enoch and two men named Lamech. How can two groups of people that are separated by God somehow end up naming their sons with the same names. How could that be possible unless they began to marry one another and that's exactly what happened. I find it strange that out of the 27 people named in the Bible before Genesis 6 three of them were women from the line of Cain. Lamech's two wives Adah and Zillah, and Naamah the daughter of Zillah. The interesting thing about these women were in fact their names. The name Adah in Hebrew means beautiful, adorned, ornament. This name was also associated with women who wore jewelry and painted their eyes to look more attractive. Adah also referred to the apostasy of Israel and to those who would not obey God. 2 Kings 9:39, Jeremiah 4:30, Ezekeil 23:40. In 2 Samuel 1:24 King Saul had the daughters of Israel adorn themselves with ornaments of gold (Adah). Esau like Lamech took two wives, one was named Adah. Naamah's name means beautiful, fair, or pleasant to look at. The sons of God saw the daughters of men and they were beautiful to look at. Could it be possible that the daughters of men in Genesis 6:2 are referring to unbelieving women from the line of Cain? If not, then who were the Daughters of the Land in Gen 27:46, or the Daughters of the Uncircumcised in 2 Samuel 1:20, or the Daughters of a Strange god, Ezra 10:2, Malachi 2:11? Did these titles just mean they were human women, or did it mean they were unbelieving women who would destroy a believing man's relationship with God. I don't believe the Lord would destroy the world and blame it entirely on men when it was supposedly something the fallen angels did. There is no mention of God ever rebuking the angels for having relationships or marriages with humans. When Jesus said we would become like the angels in Heaven would something as fantastic as fallen angels having sex with humans before the flood slip the Lord's mind? I don't think so. God destroyed the world because of the wickedness and violence that began with Cain, and it was passed down through his daughters to the sons of God and over a period of time the entire world became corrupt. Only Noah and his family found grace. The Bible only supports this view, everything else is pure speculation. Here are just a few verses that prove how God felt about His people marrying pagans. Genesis 24:40, Exodus 34:16, Deuteronomy 7:3-6, Joshua 23:12-13, 1 Kings 11:1-9, Ezra 9:2, Nehemiah 10:30, 13:25-27, Malachi 2:11. In the book of Ezra, the men of Israel were literally terrified that the Lord was about to completely destroy them. Why? Because they married pagan women. I cannot find one scripture that says angels married humans. Jude 6 says nothing about angels committing fornication. It says they were cast down for leaving their first estate. These angels chose to leave with Satan, so they all were cast down to earth to wait for their judgement. Ephesians 6:12 For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

The word translated 'giants' is 'nephiyl', from 'naphal' meaning to fall. So, literally it refers to fallen ones, which if we think of mankind, is everyone descended from Adam and Eve who fell into sin. By calling certain men fallen ones it would suggest that they were manifesting their fallen character more than others, and were demonstrating a pronounced level of ungodliness. This is shown in the following verses where God saw that the wickedness of man was great, that the earth was corrupt and filled with violence, and all flesh had corrupted his way (v11,12). These men were not only fallen in nature, but had fallen into wickedness, and most probably caused others to fall away from God. For this reason God brought upon them the flood. This passage can easily be understood to refer to mankind and his decline into sin and unbelief, without any need to believe in the idea of fallen angels.

Agree that we should be focussing on more critical aspects of the Bible, namely salvation, which is given by grace but we cannot live our lives without principles or values. Christians should strive to reinstate God's will on earth as it is in heaven. NOTABLY, we should keep our baptismal promises (by all Christian denominations). Good Christians suffer because they become the target of Satan. Do not reinforce Satan's dominion on earth by acting on his behalf by judging and gossiping about these good Christians. Instead, be God's hands and help these Christians. We should not be like Job's friends who were trying to find faults in Job despite God had said that Job is a good servant.

A speculative view? 1) How many times is the word Man, Men, or MANKIND mentioned in Genesis 6? How may times is the word angels, fallen angels, or demons used? 2) Cain's lineage starts with himself. When you've gotten "the sons of GOD" wrong for so long, what else have you gotten wrong? If we get any parts of Genesis wrong, how can we be trusted to NOT-NOT-NOT get anything else wrong? My question is: Can angelic beings procreate on their own? Do they have reproductive organs just because they can take on human form? Does human form have to include reproductive organs? In the context of the whole passage concerning child bearing in Mark chapter 12, is Jesus referring to procreation; "Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not understand the Scriptures or the power of God? For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven" Mark 24-25. He seems to imply angels don't marry because they don't procreate, they dont have sex, so there is no reason to marry? Not sure. Isn't it a good possibility that the fallen angels bore children by the daughters of men through demonic possession and not on their own?

Couple of Scriptures come to mind: Genesis tells us God created everything to reproduce after its own kind. Fallen angels and humans are NOT of the same kind. In the Book of Hebrews God asks to what angel have I said you are my son? The Book of John states To as many as received Him (Jesus) He gave the power to become the sons of God. To me that means no angel can be referred to as a son of God. And though the fallen angels may take the form of man as in the account of Sodom and Gomorrah they might be able to have sexual relations, but they cannot reproduce at all. Leaves me to believe the sons of God in Genesis 6 were men not angels. I'm still studying God's Word for the truth. We see through a glass darkly and only know in part here on earth, so Praise God, His true sons and daughters have all eternity to learn more clearly of Him and to love and serve Him more dearly. Angels came to earth to teach man to became godly, but abandon their positions, missions, abandon their home(heaven).

Jesus says in Mat 22:30: 'For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven' This teaches that the angels do not marry, and being immortal they do not need to procreate. Reproduction is only a necessity for mortals in order to replenish the population as people die. Sin and lust is also a thing of mortality, and therefore not in God's angels. God has put desire in men for women in order to bring reproduction, so we wouldn't expect that same process to be in the angels. So, the sons of God must have another meaning than fallen angels. The word 'Elohim' is sometimes translated 'mighty', for example in Gen 23:6 where Abraham is called 'a mighty prince'. So, sons of God could just mean 'sons of the mighty', that is, sons of mighty men. They then married whichever woman they chose, which could have been not only the best looking, but the tallest and strongest. This would then lead to children with greater statures than others, who became mighty men, men of renown.

Right from the beginning of scripture (Genesis 1) God establishes His law of procreation that 'ALL' creation reproduces after their own kind (repeated 11 times for emphasis and clarity). Why would God suspend His natural law of creation and breathe life into these hybrids if true? This question is never answered by the angel/women/demigod group. Why? The clear contextual congruity of the text preceding and subsequent to Genesis 6:1-4 is only about mankind. The first mention of angels is in Genesis 16. Who are the 'sons of God'? God defines the 'sons of God' only once in scripture here: ~ Romans 8:14; "For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God." Genesis 6:3 reveals who the 'sons of God' are in Genesis 6:2. ~ Genesis 6; (2) the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. (3) Then the LORD said, “My 'SPIRIT' shall not 'ABIDE' in 'MAN' forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” Who were in jeopardy of losing God's 'SPIRIT'? Angels? No! 'MAN'! Again, "For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God." 'MAN'! The remainder of the chapter is all about MEN of renown, mighty MEN, the wickedness of MAN, MAN's thoughts were only evil continually. God was sorry he had created MAN, and God will blot out MAN from the earth. What is missing? Angels, hybrid demigods, corrupted bloodlines etc.

Could the sons of God have been the men and went into women from Cain maybe they were already nephilum?
