There are two types of transplant procedures: slit grafts and micrografts.
Before we go into post-operation care, let me inform you about what happens during the surgery for a better understanding.
First, immediately post-op, the patient leaves the clinic with a bandaged head. He has been provided with a saline spray.
Do not touch the transplanted hair at all. You have to do this to prevent scab formation and to keep your scalp hydrated and nourished. Once you have completed the 12 hours of spraying, sleep for a few hours.
Stay hydrated and eat normally. Do not go overboard with the water or food. Keep it simple and healthy.
Remember to not drive or exert yourself after the surgery and take any antibiotics or pain-killer medicines given to you. The patient is advised to take complete rest for the first 2 days. He should ideally lie down to avoid swelling on the face. The patient can sleep on his back or side but not on his stomach on day 2 & 3.
The donor area has to be cleaned with betadine scrub and a topical antibiotic needs to apply in the morning & evening.
On day 3 and 4, the patient is advised to shave the beard in case beard grafts are used and he should apply sunscreen on the beard donor area and take sun protection for the next one month at least, to avoid pigmentation.
From day 4 to 14, the patient is advised to start head wash as per specific instructions. He should wash his hair using any baby shampoo or a medicated shampoo, or the shampoo that has been prescribed to you by your doctor.
All you need to do is apply about 10ml of the prescribed shampoo diluted with lukewarm water, over your head, on the grafted area particularly, and leave it on for 5 minutes. Use lukewarm water to then rinse it. This cleans the grafted area. It is advised to wash your hair twice, daily.
This will slowly remove scabs over the next 5 to 6 days. Once all the scabs are gone, the patient can resume a regular shower.
Do not use any product in your hair. Allow your hair to dry naturally. No towels, or blow-dryers. Absolutely nothing should disturb the scalp area or the grafts will be disturbed.
Now to point number 6, you may continue spraying the donor area to get rid of the pesky itchiness, your comfort is a priority here.
Between day 7 and day 10, your stitches will be removed by the surgeon. Attend all follow-up sessions with the clinic as your doctor needs to keep a look-out for infections.
It is advisable to start using Rogaine after day 14 to enhance your hair growth, this should be used at night only on the transplanted area, usually for about 6 months or continuously post operation. Again, it depends on you and your body’s needs.
After day 14, if your doctor says yes, you can return to your normal hair washing regimen. Wash your hair with whichever shampoo your doctor prescribes, to remove any crustiness on the scalp.
It is recommended to avoid strenuous physical activity for 4 weeks post-op. No gymming, swimming, cycling, tennis, golf, heavy-weight lifting and strenuous hill walking. This is to avoid any stretching of the scars and creating too much blood pressure, especially in the head. Slowly re-introduce yourself to all of this, after a month or so. Stay out of the sun as well.
The patient can return to work after 2 days of the Hair Transplant in the FUE procedure but it takes several days to recover in the FUT procedure.
Your body and especially the scalp are trying to recuperate and there is some stress on it.
After about two to three weeks, your hair will fall out to make way for new hair growth. After 8 to 12 months after surgery, new hair growth is seen.
