You might be wondering what the steps are for a family conference.
Before the Conference, a Youth Justice Coordinator will contact you and your family, or guardian. They’ll help you prepare by explaining what will happen and also answer questions you might have. When a day, time and location is organised with you, you’ll attend the family conference.
When you arrive, The Youth Justice Coordinator will be there to meet you and take you to the Family Conference room. They’ll introduce the people in the room, explain what will happen during the conference and make sure everyone’s ok.
The Police Officer will read the police report to you and check if you think it’s correct.
You’ll be asked to talk about what happened from your point of view.
If the victim comes to the Family Conference, they’ll also be asked to talk about what happened and how it affected them.
Once everyone has had a chance to talk about what happened, The Family Conference will discuss as a group what you could do after the Family Conference to help make things right.
It’s important that you do what you say you will do, otherwise you might have to go to court.
At the end of the conference, you’ll be given an agreement that you need to sign before leaving.
It’s important to remember, a Family Conference is to support you, in a safe way, to take responsibility for your actions.
