Jam's Germs Really cool video!! You guys have inspired me so much over the past few months, to invest in my first microscope, and to start recording my own videos of the microcosmos! It would mean a lot if you could check out some of my videos to help identify some of the things I found, (I’m trying to learn as much as I can myself but this community knows more than me)!

Did the water sample with the vorticella come from just a regular pond or something? In other words, how common are they? Can they be found all over?
@JoeyKlu
@JoeyKlu 4 года назад
@@djinnisequoia "Habitats may include moist soil, mud and plant roots. This protozoan is ciliated and is mainly found in fresh water environments. They are known to feed on bacteria and can also form extracellular associations with mosquitoes, nematodes, prawns and tadpoles. Vorticella has been found as an epibiont (attached to the surface of a living substratum when in its sessile stage) of crustaceans, the basibiont." - Vorticella Wikipedia page. Your question sent me on a dive through international papers, and yep, you can find their 100+ species in bodies of water all over the world.

Hi Hank and team, I have a few questions: 1. Under the microscope, how much of the z-axis do we see (besides the x-y plane)? What's the DOF that we are dealing with? 2. How thick is the typical z-axis when samples are prepared? 3. So far all the movement we see is left-right up-down, all we learn in school and see everywhere is that the "microcosmos" world is "flat"; how different do the organisms react/move when it's in the "real" world (where z-axis is "infinite") vs on the limited depth of the samples that we are viewing? 4. Do micro organism even care about 3D space, or everything to them is 2D-ish. 5. Any technology available to have a more 3D representation of the microcosmos?

What was so wonderful about getting a chance to observe for such a long time was that I felt like my brain really got a chance to orient to what I was looking at, particularly to the depth of field. The myoneme contractions may also help vorticella to eat. Under tension, the bell gets narrower, making its volume smaller. Once the bell stops moving, the volume increases, encouraging nutrients to enter its mouth. The movement of entrained water toward the vorticella as a result of the contraction may also assist with nutrient uptake.

They could just leave one of various microscope feeds up for a few hours at a time (I think they dry out eventually), and they could just have a loop of the soundtrack or maybe Hank could stop by and point out what some stuff is from time to time idk. Hank's chill narration is a big part of this channel's vibe for me but for a continuous live stream it wouldn't be replacing the content and so would be good either way.

Funny to think all of this happens between two panes of glass with a film of water trapped between them. Is it always that crowded in an average pond, or has the microbe density been increased? I remember seeing James with a filtering device he used for that purpose. If so, I don't think we should be discussing 'human sense of etiquette' here lol
@hamjudo
@hamjudo 4 года назад
It gets that crowded over time, because James is keeping the conditions right for the microbes to grow and reproduce. Conditions can get much more crowded in the green layer floating on top of the pond, or any biofilm.

Kept thinking about the scale and how fine a modern consumer resin printer can print layers now. For example the default layer height on the elegoo mars is 50µm, a little larger than one of the vorticella. You can still see layers if you look really closely, so theoretically you could see some vorticella as little specks on a slide?
