I read this online I lived in 🇮🇳 for 6 years working for a company in Bangalore from 2002-08. I met two young 🇮🇳 Army officers at a gathering and one of them told me about an incredible incident that took place in Jammu & Kashmir that goes a long way in giving such conflicting reports on the 6 decade conflict between 🇮🇳 and 🇵🇰. During an exercise in a designated, ‘No Man’s Land’ territory in the disputed Line of Control (LoC) near Kargil, this Indian officer found himself separated from his regiment during an exercise in the heavy fog that descends the winter months high up across the border. The officer found himself lost and trying to return to base. In an eerily quiet moment where visibility was no more than 4-6 feet, he suddenly came across, face-to-face, a 🇵🇰 soldier brandishing his bayonetted rifle, most likely lost himself. At this point, with both soldiers aiming their weapons at each other, the two soldiers began to circle in a tight formation. During this very tense moment, the Indian soldier slipped and fell to his knees with his helmet and rifle lying on the grassy knoll beside him. As he looked up at his foe from a prostrate position, fearing the worst, he saw his 6ft tall Pathan opponent stand up-right to attention with his rifle held behind his back waiting for the 🇮🇳 officer to recover on his feet. Once the officer stood up, he was afforded more time to pick up his weapon and put on his helmet. As soon as this was done, then both returned to their previous stance, crouched, rifle in hand, pointing at each other and again in a tight circling formation. Then this serious, life threatening incident turned to comedy as both broke into laughter as they backed-away from each other in opposite direction into the enveloping shroud of the surrounding fog! Once the officer managed to find his way back to camp on the Indian side of Kargil, his shared story was met with jovial laughter and back-slapping among his military colleagues before being ushered into the office of his superiors to report the incident as per the rules. There are plenty of recorded examples of dialogue in other professions and between citizens. 🇮🇳 and 🇵🇰 musicians and entertainers share stage and film roles, doctors give free treatments to patients across both borders, school children communicate via email and hand-written letters exchanging friendships. There are stories of 🇮🇳 and 🇵🇰 cricketers sharing hotel rooms during tours and supporters who are invited to stay in each others homes during a Test Series. The now retired 🇮🇳 officer told me that neither he, nor his “brother" from across the “artificial” border wanted to pull the trigger and felt that this conflict between the two nations is just another example of a long-standing political game that overlaps generations, played out by politicians from both camps and from the comfort of their arm chairs.
