Disclaimer: I consider myself a 'trashy' romance reader. The purpose of this video is to raise awareness of the stigmatization of women's fiction, not to offend anyone by calling romances 'trashy.'
Hi everyone! I hope you're doing well. Sorry for being MIA. I finished my final exams last week, and I was super busy. I'm on summer break now, so I can upload video essays and book content more often.

I used to be really judgy towards my friend’s erotica books. She sits there and reads two of them a day! I used to sit on my high horse because I read scientific non fiction, sci-fi and fantasy… but after more research and seeing her happy when reading them, I realized I was being a git. Everyone should read what they enjoy.

I think most people are judgemental at some point in their lives. I was the same when I was in my teens. With time, I have learned to embrace escapist fiction. I usually read lots of classic literature and scholarly essays. However, fantasy and romance always help me overcome reading slumps. Literature should bring people joy. Shout-outs to you for accepting you were wrong and understanding your friend. 🙌

@@evasliteraryparlour thank you! I should also mention that watching her consume so many books inspired me to read more as well. Ultimately, I thank romance books and my friend for getting me to read more lol.

You should be "judgy" in the face of clear sexual perversions.

more than a stigmatization for me it's the way people don't leave other people to enjoy something they don't understand, like a music genre, a hobby, or the level of spice in a dish.

I don’t understand why trashy romance has been grouped together with dark romance. It is not the same thing at all! Trashy romance is comforting and fun, dark romance is just Lolita 2.0 This is not nesecerally related to the video I just… wanted to rant with you :)

Trashy romance is the most wholesome genre 🤗. I find it even more escapist than fantasy.

I learned a lot here. Thank you. I did see those "trashy romances" in supermarket books and magazine sections growing up and never gave them a second thought. My interest in them came with the release of Bridgerton on Netflix. I have not read much romance yet, but plan to read more when I get the chance. I did study Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" in school and I couldn't make it through the audiobook because nothing much happens (so I guess sex has it's purpose in keeping one glued to the page). I also studied in school and read "Washington Square" by Henry James which I called an "anti-romance" in my review but it was incredibly dull and had an ending with no character growth or reward.

Thank you for your comment! My brother is currently reading PaP and he is going through the same with this novel. I think Jane Austen is overrated as a romance author. To me, she is more of a social history writer that uses romance subplots to tell her story. I read her as such and always enjoy her novels. LOL sex definitely makes things more interesting. It keeps the stakes high. The only Henry James novel I have read is The Turn of the Screw and I hated it, so I'm not surprised you did not like his other novel 🤣

Just discovered your channel through your magical realism video and I'm so thrilled I did! I'm loving your topic choices and the way you deliver them is so well put and special. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and creating such good content, specially for those of us who are starting on our journeys as literature students. Here were I live, in Brazil, education is not the greatest (in most of the cases, at least) so it is really always very nice to discover such good content like yours. In short: you are so cool, cute and inspiring. I'm really in awe. I hope more and more human beings can find their ways into your channel. 💖

Thank you for your kind words! It means so much to me. Literature is my passion and special interest. I created this channel because I had no one to talk about books and always felt like a bore because of it. It makes me very happy to see that these videos are of help to someone out there!🤩 Good luck with your studies! Humanities and Arts are unappreciated fields, that's why they need people like us to continue existing.

I LOVED this video essay and instantly subscribed to your channel! I don’t typically read romance novels, but I’m certainly not opposed to it. I appreciate all the gender bias issues you discussed surrounding this topic. I’m mostly a fantasy reader, and I’ve been in conversations lately about how much discomfort fantasy readers have regarding consensual sex in the genre while being on board with war and violence. It’s an interesting topic. Thank you so much!

Thank you for your support! It's never too late to start☺. I only began reading romance six years ago. I love fantasy too, but, yeah, can't say that I feel comfortable reading non-consensual sex scenes. Have you watched any video on the subject? I would like to hear what people say. 😁

@@evasliteraryparlour I don't know of any specific video essay addressing the topic, but it is interesting. I do love a romantic subplot now and then and could imagine enjoying some romance books in the future! 😊
