I'm willing to admit that our immigration laws need reform. That doesn't mean people should break the law until it gets changed to something that better suits them. This, seems to me, to be common sense. Somehow, this gets conflated with racism or, at the very least, having an anti-immigrant stance. The complicating factor is that many are breaking the law out of survival. They aren't just breaking the law out of convenience or for things which harm themselves or others (like stealing for drugs or murder). So that's a big difference which complicates your rationalization.
You're right. That's why immigration is a touchy subject. Undocumented immigrants want to obey the law, but current pathways simply don't allow them to "get in line". Because there is no line at all. Employment-based immigration usually takes years, commonly a decade, to achieve, and tens of thousands of dollars. You're hearing right, tens of thousands dollars. Being an international student finishing the university here in the US can easily become a $200,000 experience, and the later H1B and EB2 and EB3 immigration only takes place after you have "lawfully" finished your degree in the US. This whole process takes place in about 10 years to finally obtain a green card. I haven't mentioned how hard it is getting a H1B, it's not merit-based. It's probability-based. Google H1B lottery.
Maybe just present the facts without painting them as bad or hard or anything of that sort. How many individuals should we allow in a year? How many from each country? Why? How much tax welfare should we provide? Who is going to process this? The same people complaining about CBP, ICE and USCIS want more people allowed. Who's going to to process these individuals?? Are we going to just allow anyone in? Are these individuals going to require government healthcare, welfare, housing, etc.?

Its very difficult to become a US citizen. Usually years, sometimes decades. Tens of thousands of dollars. And that’s if you qualify, and if you are approved. Very strict, and often subjective, judging of the applicant. It’s much easier said than done.

I still don’t get the Asylum visa. Back in 2006 my dad tried to apply for it but was rejected every time. If I remember correctly on what he said, was that he was friends unknowingly with a guy that was part of a gang. One day when they went out to a party together the guys rival gang pulled up and started a a whole fight in which my dad was caught in the middle of. It wasn’t a normal fight where it’s fist fight oh no it was a full blown gun or knife fight. It didn’t matter if you weren’t a part of any gang but if you were even close to anyone in their gang you’d be considered a target. But in this confrontation my dad got stacked twice on the side of his stomach. He stopped being friends with this person but it didn’t change a thing cause a few months later when he was out shopping one people in the gang recognized him and called a few others to assault my dad and again beat him to the point that his stitched up side was reopened. So my dad tried to apply for asylum with so much proof on what was going on with the bruises and stab wounds on his side he was denied. this was around when I was like 5-6 years old so he knew this couldn’t keep going on otherwise it could drag both my mom and myself into it and he’d fear the worse which caused him to resort to his only choice which was to illegally cross over to the US. Idk if it’s possible for him to apply again now that it’s been years since it happened he doesn’t know if he can reapply for asylum but is it worth it?

I remembered when I was a kid living in Oregon picking strawberries and green beans. This was back in the early seventies.
