- bands with barely any original members in them. Change the band name. - public feuds with band members. Keep that stuff behind closed doors. - bands that change their sound so much to the point they sound like a totally different band. Call the band something else. - bands who do “farewell tours” then get back together a few years later. - older bands who just tour and tour non stop and don’t put out any new music or a new album.

I'll agree with older bands who just don't do new music. It's like, what happened? Steve Walsh for Kansas, once they released 'Somewhere to Elsewhere' refused to record new music, didn't want anything to do with it. I'll give The Who Credit (The Rolling Stones too this year) for releasing a new album in 2019 but then Roger said in an Interview that no more new music would be coming because as he said "What's the point?" because the album really didn't sell. Too much to make ($$$) and not enough in sales to cover the cost. So, maybe older bands just don't do new music because it's a lot to do with no reward and then if you tour behind it the fans don't want to hear anything new. They just want to hear the "hits" over and over and over again which we've heard already 10 million times. I don't get it. I'm one of the few then that wants to hear new music from bands. I mean I would love to hear bands go out on tour who have amassed quite a lot of albums during their career and hear all the non-hits. That would be an awesome tour because a lot of times the best music on an album aren't the hits. The Doobie Brothers though continue to release new music which is fantastic. Should be one this year with Michael McDonald involved also. But on tour their set list pretty much remains the same with their hits even though they've released 15 studio albums with this year being #16.

Hmm... This was a good discussion. Some of mine: - Reissues without extras. Or too many reissues of the same product. - bands playing with symphonies. I have yet to hear one that actually works. - bands that add reworked versions of their own classic songs to help sell their new album. - The two that pissed me off the most was ZZ Top having rerecorded drum tracks on their Six Pack collection and Ozzy releasing his first two albums with Lee Kerslake replaced on drums. - CD compilations that have great songs, but not some or all are lame re-recordings. - Lame CD inserts. Either the inside fold is blank, or it is just a single two-sided card with a stripped-down layout. - Full disclosure on lineups for live shows. I don't care if Foreigner wants to continue, but I want to know if the members I care about are there or not. Also, Quiet Riot? Still together? C'mon! I feel a lot of this happens with bands who are faceless or semi-faceless. Kansas just recently came through. That's a band I would consider seeing, but I would need to check who is in the lineup.

Turn off is band firing members and diss on each other in the media. Skid row, Queensrÿche, and others just to name a few. I don't like to be filled with Ego drama. I love the music they created but the media about so and so did this and that is a real turn off.

There are certainly genres and sounds that have very low odds of being something I would like, but the only thing that's a 'hard no' where I won't even give it a try anymore is the black metal vocal style. I never want to hear someone shriek again. I don't find it pleasant, or even musical, and being able to avoid every band that does it is why I'm a fan of genre labels.

Very interesting video. My biggest musical turm-offs are mainly connected to certain kinds of metal: I hate growling vocals, double bass pedals and excessive guitar vibrato in extreme metal. I also dislike guitar shredders and dramatic vocals in power metal, and the fact that practically every metal song has to have a guitar solo. Just like you, I also dislike the nü metal sound.

My biggest problem with much of the modern releases is when they have the vocal tracks far too loud in the mix. I like Smashing Pumpkins, but listen to one of the first 3 albums and compare with anything from the last couple decades. Same for many new bands, over processed vocals that take over the song and distract from the music. Someone once said this is a byproduct of the infamous "loudness wars". It ruins the music and doesn't allow the actual instruments to breathe. Great video guys!

The Darkness are in no way a parody band. They are a throwback who write incredible riffs blending the styles of Queen with ACDC and a bit of Thin Lizzy. They have a retro Glam look which turns some people off. Can't lump them in with Steel Panther- ever. Check out Japanese Prisoner of Love or Black Shuck to name just two.
@BrendonSnyder
@BrendonSnyder 27 дней назад
That’s just my take when listening to The Darkness. The vocals are so over the top they sound like a parody of the original era bands that did it first. I’m not knocking them, I’m just saying I’ve never been able to get into them due to the over the top vocals. But then I’m not a fan of Death Metal either for the same reason.

When bands don't print the lyrics in the booklet. The only bands who don't want you to sing along are those with godawful lyrics. Also, bands that print their lyrics with a tiny font, in an inscrutable script, or in black lettering on a slightly less-black background.

For me it's when an artist changes their style of music, image and even name completely from what they originally did. Perfect example for me is Ke$ha. I loved her first few albums where she did fun dance songs. Then she released an album under Kesha and got rid of the dollar sign in her name and that album just didn't do it for me. I didn't like it at all. So I never bought it for the collection and haven't really given her newer music a chance since.

Learning to play guitar in the late 90’s/early 2000’s when Nu metal was popular, it was difficult learning songs by bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, System of a Down, etc. because a lot of them played down tuned 7 string guitars, down tuned even more than just drop D tuning so it became such a hassle to figure out the tuning only to want to then switch gears and play something in standard tuning. Then you gotta spend time getting your instrument changed back again.

The tragic irony of Motley Crue is that they keep making albums full of experimental crap rather than what they are loved for. I'm 49 and have been a Crue fan since 87, I want to hear Girls×3, not Mudvayne. I suspect that a Crue that went back to their roots would be much more popular than the one we have now.

My instant turn-off is if your vocalist sounds like a 12-year old boy: My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Shawn Mendes, blink-182, Sum 41... can't stand it. That's not to be confused with The Beach Boys and Slaughter, who sing in falsetto, and sound wonderful (to my ears). But who can explain why I love Dave Mustaine, but can't get into James Labrie. The audacity. If you're gonna "Tribute" to something, you have to at least be on the level of the band you're gonna tribute. 2) Songs that start off with a sick, amazing, badass metal riff and you're jamming out because holy shit, this song's about to RIP... then the vocals start and they're like this melodic, vibrato-filled garbage. I mean I don't have many at all. ONE kind of is remaking a HIT of your own, hate this, Jovi did it with Livin on a prayer 94, Chicago did it with 25 or 6 to 4 on Chicago 18 even they said it was the worst thing ever, and the Police did it with "DOnt stand so close to me 86" and others have done this too, I don't consider this like an unplugged or something cause some do this, this three in particular two were released as singles and Jovi tacked it on to a hits compilation. Band feuds were mentioned, I feel the same way, though not a big KISS fan at all, their drama annoys me, but two bands I am a fan of one being STYX I love what they are doing BUT every known and then I still see interviews with Tommy and JY and they are blaming Dennis for stuff still 25 years since he was kicked out. As much as I love the new styx stuff I get annoyed when I hear them bad mouth songs like a Mr Roboto and then you add the song to your setlist, it makes them look like hypocrites. Another band is Journey way too much drama in this band, I lose track at what annoys Neal Schon this week, now he's annoyed that Steve covered a song and its a song you cant even hear Steves voice on, then the stuff with politics in the band, Neal and Cain just both get over it and break up or do shows, no one needs to know who you vote for, I respect bands and artists for their stances but when people pay for a ticket they paid to see Journey or whomever they didnt come to a political rally. Also thank you for saying that about AI in music, NUNO of extreme did an interview with Rick Beato and said "People are worried about AI in music, its been here for decades" People don't realize Pro Tools, Auto Tune, all of that stuff, even layering tracks all of it is AI in its own way, AI has many levels of what It is. People again confuse things like someone paying $5 to download a John Mayer voice to use for a song to cleaning up old vocals to remove tape hiss, its way different stuff.

One thing that really bothers me musically is certain albums that are recorded with a clicky sounding kick drum sound. I HATE that! It should be a beautiful THUMP, not a click. It's not a click track, it's the sound of ... I don't know, the kick pedal sound? Whatever, I hate it. One sound I do like is a rhythm sample, like from a record and you can hear the scratch in the record, and then they play live drums over that. I love that sound. The Mick Mars album sounds good to me - and I think it's great that he's able to express his muse the way he feels it, and not be tied down to recreating the Crew sound. I also dig the megaphone sound on vocals SOMETIMES, not all the time. • Maybe Eddie is going bald? • Songs about kids: Walter Trout wrote a few songs about his son on one album, I couldn't listen to them. Didn't like that at all. Great conversation here.

Given that there’s no reason for shitty recordings and dismal mastering..WHY is so much music crappy to listen too. Just wrapped up the Munich Hi End Audio Fest ..there’s a reason why there’s a selection of music that’s used to demonstrate a $700k audio system.

Growling “cookie monster” style vocals. A shame because a lot of the music that those bands have are really good. Just can’t do it tho. Now the biggest one for me is the electric drum sound that was so prevalent in the 80’s. Even Neal Peart, Alex Van Halen……. Just about everybody did it. Didn’t like it then and HATE it now. For example I think with Rush Grace Under Pressure Power Windows and even Hold Your Fire would have a way better sound with a “real drum” sound replacing that electronic drum junk IMO 😁

lots! songs that fade out- that is SLOPPY songwriting, end the damn song dont' make me wait while it fades out...that's why I love live albums!/ concerts they HAVE to end the song there. even worse- fading a song out, then fading it back up...wtf?? end the goddamn song. sloppy and annoying! songs that fade in are just as annoying. and # 4 overhyping musicians.. perfect example- Cobain, yeah - great singer and guitarist my fat ass. \m/

Late 80s PRODUCTION. Not the music, simply the mixing. Shrill, piercing, non-organic. Take Whitesnake " here i go again" the original from 82, it sounds good, then the 87 version production is so over-the-top. Prime example is 70s era ZZ TOP, its awesome, sounds organic, then some asshole remixed their 1st 6 albums in 1987 for a cd called Zz Top sixpack, and suddenly they sounded terrible. Def Leppard High N Dry sounds awesome, but Hysteria is way overproduced. Dont even get me started on Bon Jovi, the 1st self-titled album sounds good, then Fahrenheit and on, sound awful to me. Steve Winwoods "valerie" from 82, is maybe a little underproduced, but the 87 version is the exact opposite. Overproduction annoys me to the point, where it ruins otherwise good music
