People often ask me about how to maintain their bee hotels, in this video I explain a bit about hotel maintenance, and I also introduce you to many of the bees and wasps that live in bee hotels.
If you want to learn how to make a bee hotel, check out this video ( • How to make a bee hotel ).
One of my bee hotels is an observation hotel I got from thebeeswaggle.wordpress.com/

Thank you! This video was very informative. I just installed my bug hotel around a month ago. I didn’t expect anything to move in. But apparently I was wrong. Today while I was sunbathing two different kinds of bees were fighting for one spot/hole. The bigger one won. But I was soo happy to see that my very little bug hotel is actually a sanctuary for some bugs. It is just lovely 🥰

Thank you so much for this video. It’s my third year and I just saw a wasp leave caterpillars for her babies in one of the tubes and I was panicking at the idea of having to evict them. But I think they may be potter wasps and thus no threat to my orchard babies. :)

I've always loved bees and would love to provide bee hotels too, but my garden is already a haven for various species of butterflies. Having wasps that feed on caterpillars sounds like a really bad idea in my case haha. Informative video, thanks!

many wasps only hunt specific kinds of insects. Grass carying wasps, for example, only hunt tree crickets. There are some thread waisted wasps that hunt caterpillars, and some potter wasps, but I think a healthy ecosystem will include caterpillars and wasps, not too much of either. best of luck with your garden, sounds like it is going well so far.

@@TheBeesInYourBackyard and as stated in the video: more caterpillars = more wasps. less caterpillars = less wasps. nature will try to balance. The bee hotel is maybe an interesting way to learn about what insect populations you have that predators are after.

interesting analysis of the wasps frequenting our bug hotels: even in my case (I live in north-eastern Italy) I noticed the presence of different species of wasps, especially in the June-July period (when many osmia and other solitary bees have already completed the closure of the their nests (I attach a video of esemoio - --> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F7P3MG_j0ms.html ). Now I am more aware of their function.

I live in a suburb near Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Growing zone 5 by US standards. I have 20 mature bushes of early blueberries and raspberries in my small backyard. My neighbours have nothing blooming in the Spring. Last Spring, I got some Mason bees. My bee house was filled with natural reeds that I bought from the bee company. I also got the mud box and the spray that is supposed to attract the mason bees back to to bee house where they hatched from. I followed all the instructions. But at the end of Summer, the nesting tubes were empty except for 2 baby spiders. I concluded that while the Mason bees may do well on the west coast in Washington state and in British Columbia, they don't do so well in Ontario. Should I order more of the Mason bees for next Spring? Or am I setting myself for another failure? Luckily, each Spring, 3 bumblebees appear out of nowhere just in time to pollinate my blooming blueberries and later, they also pollinate my raspberries . But I read that bumblebees are quite picky. I also noticed that some of my blueberry varieties were very poorly pollinated, (less than 50%) while others were 100%. I have no idea where the bumblebees nest, but I suspect that their spot is somewhere near my backyard. I believe that those same bumblebees last the whole Summer, till the first frost. Each year, I see them pollinating my dahlias in my front garden. They even sleep in the flowers! The last Summer I counted 7 of them. Last Spring, I planted a variety of native perennial flowers that bloom really early in the Spring, in hope that come next Spring, they will attract more bumblebees and other early pollinators.

Good stuff! Ok, I drilled some different size holes in a block of wood. I have it under the leaves of a Hosta plant but on the edge so I can still see the front. Is this a good idea? Or should I place it in the open?

Height isn’t too much of an issue, I’ve had good luck anywhere between 1-6feet off the ground. Areas with morning sun are often a good location.

Are grass-carrying wasps nuisances? I just discovered one making a nest in the tube-like lip of my planter on my balcony. I just wonder if it’ll ever try to sting my cats or me while I’m out on the balcony. It’s fascinating though! I was wondering why the heck there was a bunch of dried grass on my balcony all of a sudden after sweeping it and then I saw the wasp!
@TheBeesInYourBackyard
@TheBeesInYourBackyard Год назад
They are really quite mellow, and not aggressive, I think the only way you would get stung is if you grabbed it sat on it

Thanks for these precious info on insect hotel. I have a question 🙋‍♂️, but all these bees and wasps are not dangerous? They do not sting humans? Transmit disease?
@CatFinder3000
@CatFinder3000 2 года назад
Most solo bees don’t have any stingers and therefore can’t harm a person. However most bees and wasps will leave you alone so long as you don’t go out of your way to mess around with them.
@josephobrien991
@josephobrien991 2 года назад
@@CatFinder3000 This is true. Wasps and bees are all you need to maintain the bad insects that harm your plants and flowers. In early stages of the garden the aphids ect. Have the upper hand. But the plants will survive this damage as more leaves grow. But after the garden is established, the wasps will do their thing to keep these detrimental insects in check. Unless, of course, you kill the wasps with poisons you used to try to control the initial aphid damage and such.

Is it possible to make bee hotels that cater to sweat bees (like Augochlora sp)? Or are those more preferring truly rotting wood?
@TheBeesInYourBackyard
@TheBeesInYourBackyard 2 года назад
Not really, basically all sweat bees except for one species in North America nest in the ground, augochlora pura will dig into rotting wood, but not in preexisting cavities like a bee hotel
