/ @fromduffertodriver Playing the front 9 at Golf Dorval today, we will be taking a look at what it takes to break 100. I'm breaking 100 every other round, so hopefully this video is helpful.
Thanks!! You're the reason I got into golf in the first place! Your videos inspired me to pick up golf, and then again inspired me to make RU-vid! Waddaplaya!
Is this me? Everywhere you look guys are shooting scratch but there’s so many of us just scrambling to play bogey golf. I bombed a 290 on par 4 yesterday within 10 of the green and carded a 5. This is my golf life. Keep swinging dude.
As a single digit handicap golfer who just got back into golf after not playing for 14 years I was making alot of the mistakes you were the first three rounds of golf. I eventually started practicing, working out in the gym and at home. Getting my swing fixed, invested in my golf bag and playing more rounds of golf. Some people are naturally talented at golf, some have to work harder. It helps if you have a little bit of both. Good luck and work on your game. You’ll get there and enjoy golf it’s a great sport.
I feel you. There’s a long par three at my course, probably 220 yards. The other day I put it on the green and five putted for a 6. I wanted to curl up and die. Lol.
Golf Sidekick said that if you can't hit a shot 150y reliably, then you need to get some lessons from a pro. That's what I did and it's what helped me the most. I'm breaking 100 regularly now. The second thing that helped is that if a club isn't working (like my 3 wood), leave it in the bag. Nice video!
Thanks! That video where GolfSidekick talked about having a 150 club was the video that convinced me that maybe I can actually pick up golf and break 100! I think a private lesson would do wonders
Started playing in my 50s and breaking a hundred is the dream every Saturday. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't, but getting out on there is so much fun, the exercise and camaraderie... awesome 🙂
Thanks, I'm glad that people are finding the videos relatable! I'm trying to be open and honest, you'll see a lot of bad shots and silly mistakes here.
Really enjoyed some of your videos today. I played my first 9 holes yesterday and was horrified by how much I struggled. I had a few good holes but completely lost count on a few too. It’s been nice to see content from genuine high handicap players to aspire to in the short term. You hit some great shots, keep it up
Thanks! I remember my first 9 holes being horrifying as well 😅 keep at it, we all have to start somewhere right? Late start to the season this year for me, but I can't wait to get back out there
Thanks for posting these. It's candid videos like these that help keep me motivated. I have a high handicap, too, and I have yet to break 100. I know it'll happen; I just have to be patient. I just keep telling myself, "Don't give up. Cuss the whole time if you have to, but don't give up." 😆
Love the video and the brutal honesty that comes with high handicap golf, which is the majority of weekend golfers. Hey, I was around your skill level 2-3 years ago. Now im averaging low 90s, with my best round of 85 last week. I haven't had a lesson since i took a one semester golf class at community college 10 years ago, so im just trying to get my game there on my own. One thing I noticed that could help you a ton is club selection. You hit driver on a lot of the tees, and 3 wood off the deck. One of the first times I let the ego battle go of hitting my long clubs, I took my driver and 3 wood out of the bag and just played my irons. Turns out when you mishit irons, they arent WAY out of play, just a little. And they are easier to get the ball in the air and forward. The next piece of advice I'd give you, is spend time on your 120 yard shots and in. Go to the range and hit a full bucket of just SW, PW, 9 iron. Take half shots, full shots, chip shots. Just focus on striking the ball in the center of the face and swinging easy. That tip alone dropped probably 10 strokes off my game in a season.
This is very very good advice! I just played a round yesterday and was making an effort to put thought in my club selection. Instead of trying to go 3 wood into PW, just hit two solid 7irons. Much easier to control, and when you spend as much time in the rough as I do, it really makes a difference. I'll make a video where I take out those clubs from my bag and we can see how I fare! Thanks!
I’m a 12 handicap and the thing that makes you better than me is that even after your bad shots, you still come back to the camera smiling. I could never master that aspect of my game.
It helps that I don't set myself super high expectations! Honestly, I do get frustrated sometimes, but I'm out there to have fun. So you shake it off, and your next shot might be your best shot.
I love this video! The truth is that most golfers are at this stage... a lot of people will come here and disagree... I live in a country club in PA, and at least over here, most golfers barely break 100... this is very relatable... thank you!
Thanks for the positive comments 😁 I play at a Public course and see all different types of handicaps. It sometimes feels like we are the worst players on the course, but we are not alone!
Thanks, I'll keep on grinding! Haven't had as much time to play the last two months, so I'm going to try and squeeze in as many rounds as possible before the end of the fall. Maybe see you on the course!
Really good video and insightful commentary, Joseph! I can see you have good physical coordination and I bet your scores will drop steadily with continued practice and playing. I look forward to watching more. Thanks for sharing with us!
Thank God for this video. I thought I was the only one. I'm exactly in the same spot your game is right now. I cannot break a hundred to save my life. I know I haven't been playing very long but everything you talk about is exactly where my game is at.
Thanks! Wanted to have a 'real' take on my actual game. Most the videos I see on youtube are aspirational, great shots, great scores, etc. This is just an honest take on what my game looks like, and I'm sure there are many of us out there who can relate!
I enjoyed that. This kind of golf looks horribly familiar but it was really valuable to see a playback of everything I do. It's a good way of looking at it, that a high handicap means you are going to be scrambling so to be mentally prepared for that and to work on avoiding it.
Fairly new to golf here myself, started playing at the beginning of the year. I am trying to break 100 by the end of the year. My 1st round was 128 and has been consistently coming down last few rounds have been around the 110. So hoping to break a 100, I have found playing with a positive mindset has really helped me so far. Instead of swing, swear, look for ball and repeat. Just say it’s moving and smile.
@@fromduffertodriverhopefully I will, if I don’t fair enough and that will be my target next year. My last two rounds were 112 & 114, I always seem to one hole that is a horror show.
Hello from Ireland. I feel your pain. I can count on one hand the number of times I've broken 100. My biggest hurdle is the mental game. Keeping calm and refocusing after the many inevitable bad shots. Also, i find if i overthink it messes with my head. I play much better when im relaxed with an almost don't care attitude. Consistent iron play is also a huge issue for me. Generally good with my driver and putter... everything else in-between is a bit of a lottery TBH. Great video BTW.
Thanks, I'm right there with you. It helps if you play with people you're familiar with and you have a relaxed fun atmosphere, that's when I play my best 👌
Great video. I am over the moon if I get a double bogey on a par 5, and am doing cartwheels when I snag the occasional par. But I usually have one hole where I play shots like an actual golfer and that is what brings me back the following week.
A few days ago I went in to try and break 100 for the first time. I got 101. I had two par 3s that’s I got an 8 on bc of bunkers. I was so annoyed. I was on track to doing the best I’ve ever done. Coulda broke 90 if I had done things a bit differently. Especially 4 putting when it was totally avoidable by taking an extra 30 seconds to look at my shot before I take them. I hope I can get close again bc I never do good twice in a row.
Keep at it my friend! If you've gotten close once before you can do it again. It's frustrating to get a score and know exactly where you lost strokes, and you know you could have done better. The few times I got 94, there were a few holes that I completely goofed and 4 putted, so I know the feeling. Maybe won't be the next time you play, but you're breaking 100 this summer. You got this.
thanks for the great video! check out tom saguto; he has his own online golf school that teaches stack and tilt. one small change i made from watching saguto was to put more weight on my front foot and leave it there...helped me make much more consistent contact. i used to shoot around 100, now i'm low 90's and occasionally getting into the mid 80's if it's an easier course. but thanks again! i enjoyed it very much.
I'm the exact handicap as you and videos like this really make me feel better about being on the course. So often I find myself apologizing to whoever I'm playing with for trying to get better.
I felt the exact same way! The more I play, the more I realize that not everyone is amazing at golf, and as long as you're respectful and keep up with the pace of play, your fellow golfers won't care what handicap you are. Keep playing, and keep getting better!
@@fromduffertodriverI'm an 8 handicap and honestly any decent golfer knows how it is, they were in your shoes when they started it before they got lessons or whatever. I get it though I used to apologize when I played with better golfers when I wasn't as good as I am now. (I'm not good at golf I'm out there trying to survive)
Loved the video. Also had some struggles with the slice and was doing the same thing you are doing. Letting your arms go from your chest at downswing. The "towel-trick helped me cure this as I was forced to keep my arms to my chest by squeezing tight. Try it, I am sure you will cure that slice as I did. On hole 3 you kept the arms nicely tucked with the driver.
Thanks! I'll give the towel trick a try. I've seen it done on RU-vid but haven't tried it myself. It's usually my driver that gets me into a lot of trouble 😅
Good videos thanks to sharing your golf course with us :) I you don't mind, I can give you a little advice with your irons shot. I've noticed when your started your backswing, you engage your hands first and you begun to arm/roll them a bit, it's not good at all for regularity and to have a good trajectory without compensate, but it's pretty easy to fix that with a bit of practice ^^ I'm pretty sure your motor preferences in your golf swing is to have a earthy posture because your weight in your posture is on the back of your foots, you are very anchored in the ground. And your low mobile point, it means your motor for turning is your hips, the low back for be precise, it's your starting point in the backswing and downswing. Your axis is pretty vertical too (I can be wrong, you have to test for be sure if all i say for you it's pretty natural and balanced, but what I see in video it's this) So for this type of natural specifities of your body (the same of my father so i know well), you have to be in line during the begining of your backswing, start to rotate with your hips (all the upper body gonna move in the same time) and be really connected with your arms (elbow pretty close each other) without move at all your hands before passing your right thigh, and then you begin to arm pretty quick your hands and continue to rotate your body all the way up while keeping your arms very connected. If not, your downswing look pretty good, your start to engage your hips first at the descent. But i have noticed at 4:43 in the video that your balance is not good and you fall a bit frontward because your right foot slip in back in the grass. You have to focus to stay your right foot at his place. Maybe a better backswing will help to be more balanced during all the movements because I guess your compensate a lot to have the face square at the impact, and will fix this foot problem. Practice that, i thinck it will be really helpfull for you and continue to make videos like this, it was fun ;)
Great video buddy. It refreshing to see "bad golf" most channels are scratch golfers.. I'm not saying you're bad, you're just like the rest of us weekend warriors
Exactly!! I wanted to show that we aren't all scratch golfers getting par's and birdies left and right. A lot of "Breaking 100" type videos are from those who have long passed that milestone. I'm in it currently, as a lot of recreational golfers I'm sure are.
Love your video. I started out 4 years ago shooting 125. Two keys to better golf if you don't mind me saying is. 1. Alignment and 2. swing pace. You don't have to try and hit the ball 100 mph to be consistent. Nice and slow. If you can find someone to give you some good tips take advantage of that. I was very blessed to find a former PGA pro to work with me. After two years of hard work l'm shooting in the mid 80s. Don't give up you will get there.
Wow mid 80's, hopefully one day I can get there. I need to practice more and definitely have a coach help me out. I'll be sure to post that journey here!
Try setting your right foot back behind you 3-4" from your left foot. This will promote more of an inside swing and stops the slice. Great video btw! Keep it up.
You had more than few moments of brilliance! Great content and I really enjoyed watching. Was wondering are you currently playing a urethane or premium golf ball? Not tradiionally preferred from a high-handicapper, but they generally have lower ball flight.
Thank you! When I buy golf balls, lately I've been getting the Wilson Staff "Soft" golf balls. But honestly most the time I'm using balls I've found in the woods when looking for my ball 😅
Guys golf is a really tough game. Trust me, not everyone is shooting scratch. It takes dedication to practicing and hitting balls almost everyday, and that's AFTER you come up with a decent, repeatable swing. If you can hit your drives 250 that's really all the length you need. Of course longer is better, but consistency is the name of the game. I think the best way to score lower sooner is to start with the short game and move out. Start with putting, then chipping, and slowly work your way out. Hit ball first then ground. Good luck.
Honestly your swing is decent, big thing is mental blocks. Practice swings good but swing changes a bit when you line up to the ball. My big hurdle was hazards, I overthought about them and as soon as I didn’t my scores plummeted. If you don’t plan to land the ball in the water, just don’t even think about the water. You’ve got a lot of potential dude! Solid swing, solid understanding of what mistakes you’re making, just keep it up!
Thanks! I've removed practice swings from my routine for this exact reason. Good idea about not overthinking hazards. If you're overthinking it and looking at it, you'll subconsciously aim for it
loved the video, I know there are alot of people giving tips haha half of which arent gonna help. All I can say is just enjoy it, the average player doesnt break 100 every time they play as told to me by my local pro. the game is hard, you will get better. Just stick to it and focus on each shot !!!! Keep it up bud.
My home muni !! I've played this front 9 about 150 times in the last 3 years... have hit every one of these lies, lol. The green on 8 was rough in 2023 !
To keep it real, there’s a heck of a lot more golfers like you than there are shooting 80 and below. Don’t be hard on yourself, unless you’re playing on the Tour, nobody cares about your score aside from you! No criticism from anybody but yourself. Golf is hard!
Golf is hard! And I'm always trying to beat my PB, sometimes to the detriment of having fun. We have to remember that's it's just a game, and the end goal should be to have fun!
I have the opposite problem...my driving is relatively reliable--I found out I have ADHD, this past year, so staying focused is actually my biggest issue--but my short game/putting is where things usually end up unraveling for me. It's fairly common, unfortunately, for me to be in a position to start off putting for birdie and walk away with a double bogey. And my wedges...if I'm 60+ yards out, I'm fine. If I'm only a couple of yards off the green, I'm usually okay. Five to fifty-five yards? It's a crapshoot at that point. I've broken 100, this summer...ironically, I was golfing with three guys who had never played the course before, so I was constantly thinking about it so I could advise them on where the green was, where to stay out of trouble. I'm generally thrilled to score anything less than double-bogey, and I'm pretty consistently under 110. Just trying to ease into a new point range...
It's definitely a slow grind to improve your scores. I wonder if playing with the 3 course newbies helped keep you more focused on the current hole since you were spending time thinking to advise them. My best scores have come when I was really taking my time to think about my next shot, and what my intent was, instead of grabbing the longest club and hitting in the direction of the hole. Here's hoping you start breaking 100 consistently this summer, keep at it! Keep practicing that short game!
25 handicap so i can relate to your struggles keep it in play. No penalties 100% take the conservative approach, always add extra club. firm 90% shot more reliable that a 100/110% swinging out of your boots. Make your practice 3 holes rather than range practice. Hit 2 options off the tee a long and a safe ie favourite hybrid and driver. You will find some holes safe hybrid works and you score easy bogey helps give you a 2nd option on nemisis holes etc.
Thx for the vidéo :) allways cool to see other people like us :D I just see that you're allways aiming left of your target. Is there a reason for this?
You played ok. Looks like a bit of uncertainty crept in sometimes. I never broken a 100. Worked on my swing over Winter, played one full round then the day after tore my achilles. Biggest hurdle for me are lost balls/penalties
"Shot Tracer" on the app store on your phone. It's like 7$ one time fee, but it can be quite finicky. Bonus points if you're already recording on your phone like I am!
@fromduffertodriver Love it, thanks! I'll give it a go. I record on my phone (iphone) too, brilliant quality from just your phone 🙂 Although, I tend to just record to give myself something to learn from (real vs feel, can be so different in my swing 🤣)
nice man, i just broke 50 for the first time a few weeks ago. i shot 49 on a par 35. is there a part two or are you just doubling your score to break 100?
I'm using an app on my phone called "Shot Tracer", I think it was maybe 7$ or something like that. I take the videos on my phone, put them through the app to add/adjust the shot tracer line. Then throw it all back onto my laptop and use Adobe Premiere Pro to edit. Hope this helps!
I can't tell what to do with driver but with irons your trail arm should be extended much longer and a club should create steaper plane. You are draging a club behind you which means you have to rely on your wrists to straighten up the shot ;)
This. I've been trying to work on my swing, as my lowest point in my swing is usually at or behind the ball, instead of past the ball. Good eye! Been working on straightening my arms since this video.
hi mate with the driver try gripping it so u can see ur top two knuckles on ur left hand so ur holding it quite on the top face of the grip so it feels like ur going to hook ur shot but you wont and it will feel good also try lower ur swing on the back swing instead of coming over the top as thats one of the main reasons of slicing but very good vid
Yeah mate recently I bought new clubs and couldn’t hit the ball for my life and I changed my grip and I’m getting roughly over par by about 4 on a par 31 I make sure I can see both knuckles with all my clubs and it seems to work really well with me mate best of luck to you on the course pal
I recommend working on your short game (pitching, chipping, and putting). It's the fastest way to lower your scores. Keep working at it and always try to have a good attitude.
At your level, I would suggest taking more club and then less swing. Hitting a straight on target 5 iron is a whole lot better than a 5h 170 and into the rough. You spent the whole day in the rough. You try to get under the ball. Hit down, not up. 90 is easily within your capabilities. They call it 'course management' and 'swinging inside of yourself'. Try it. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose.
This is something I need to work on. Focus less on trying to smash the ball as far as I can and focus on hitting down on the ball with solid contact. Almost ran out of time this season but goal is to break 90!
An app called "Shot Tracer", got it on the Play Store on my phone, I think it was 7$. It's not the most accurate tool, but it does let you adjust the shape of the tracer line.
You should consider adding another golfer, even if it's only a few shots here and there. It helps break the video up and golf's exploded on RU-vid with highhcp and lowhcp comp 🏅 It's just fun to watch ppl golf when ya stuck inside over winter. Maybe Gangnam Guy - we can start calling him Double G 😆😎⛳
Yeah I avoid that 3 wood for now lol. I'm using Cobra Radspeed irons that I bought in the off season. My other clubs are a used hodgepodge mix. I'll see if moving my rear leg helps, thanks for the tip!
If only you hit your practice swings!! And that little jump-up on the chips/short pitches, I do that too. It ruins so many of my shots. Good luck buddy.
Yup, I'm using "Shot Tracer", you can find it on the app store for android or apple, it was a one time purchase of 7$(CAD). It's very finicky, but gets the job done
25 handicaper here..... struggling with iron shots and distance. I see that your iron rests on the ground at 45 degrees... are you finding that it hits farther that way? I've been resting my iron pretty flat on the ground..maybe Im doing it wrong.
I've found for me that I have better contact when I don't rest my irons flat on the ground - If you haven't taken any lessons yet, I took some after this video and it easily added 15-20yrds per club. I wasn't twisting my body enough so I was leaving a lot of power on the table. I highly recommend a lesson or two, they might find a very small simple fix that can change your game!
Driver fix is simple, address the ball then move the head back 2 club heads back along the swing path THEN start the swing. This moves the low point inside and behind the ball.
Take them one at a time my friend! Instead of hitting longest club, I'm trying to hit safest - so even if I mis-hit the ball it will still be in an ok position
I use an app off the Google Play store, literally just called "Shot Tracer" (not sponsored). I think it was maybe 7$, does a decent job at auto tracing your shots, but give you the ability to manually tweak them to better fit the ball flight.
Keep it up! One tip of advice, you and your playing partners kept stepping on each other's putting lines. Be mindful of where you step when getting your ball out of the cup.
I feel you, I only started playing golf last year... This year (after I filmed this video) I actually took a lesson and it helped a lot with my swing! Extra 20yrds per club easy. And I'm 36, so it's never too late to start!
@@fromduffertodriver exactly! Never give up. Keep working at it. I never thought I’d even enjoy golf until my brother in law was needing someone to play with him. I couldn’t afford lessons but there’s plenty of RU-vid videos out here to help us. I watch quite a bit of Danny Maud videos myself that seem to help.
Way to lay it out there for all to see, warts and all. Maybe some unsolicited thoughts? Work back from the hole to YOUR best, meaning most accurate full swing, club. Say wedge or ??? Leave yourself that distance for the approach. Statistically I think the 3 wood is just as accurate as the driver, you should see which you hit more consistently, give the other a break. You may want to try a round teeing up with a 5 iron. Leave the driver and woods at home. Interesting what you can learn. That slice looks like you're over the top. Relax man, a 170 yard anything in play is better than an out of bounds, in the rough or worse, bunker, or water shot. You made some nice putts. Strive to keep a miss just enough to leave yourself a gimmy. Good job sir.
I try a few rounds leaving the driver at home, and another using only my irons. Results were pretty interesting! I'll post videos of them soon. Appreciate the advice.
@@fromduffertodriver Thanks for responding. Not taking any credit. I played a guy 25 years ago who teed up with the 5, he shot an 82. Hmm moment. Played a round with a retired widower 20 years ago. She didn't hit anything over 170 yards, But one ball for the round. Shot a 72. Eating some humble pie that day; but what an opportunity to think out of the box. Good luck sir, play the percentages.
0:20-0:28. Thats me in a nutshell. im new too golf and i also dont take off my glove even when i putt. Its just 1 less thing to worry about for me. Seemed like ur hybrid was letting u down .
King Cobra "Radspeed" irons and hybrid. Beginner friendly clubs that just felt right when I was trying them out. Check out my previous "what's in my bag" video
On the 2nd hole when you teed off, u can’t address the ball like u did and take a “practice” swing. Because when u swing and miss the ball after addressing it, that counts as a swing. Otherwise any time a professional player swung and missed he could just say “no actually that was a practice swing” and no one could prove otherwise
100% right. My partner called me out on it, and jokingly I brushed it off as a practice swing, but she clearly saw me miss lol. I only found out about the rule afterwards.
@@fromduffertodriver ah okay sorry didn’t mean to come down on u too hard about it I’m just a stickler for the rules, but I’ve made many mistakes myself as I’m learning
I'm no swing expert, but it looks like you are trying to "scoop" the ball when you hit your irons (such as at 05:03). It makes you lurch at the ball. I imagine that if you tweaked this your consistency might be improved.
I’ve never seen a driver practice swing whilst standing over the ball. Also , you did something weird in dropping a ball into the rough from your hand on the next hole. You ‘decide’ to change your golf ball to one you don’t mind losing in the water… hey? What? I had zero idea that golf was played like this. Darn it dude.
If you look at the rules, I'm sure you cannot decide to change balls mid-hole, but I'm not 100% sure. When you're playing high handicap like me, and it isn't a tournament or anything, I will sometimes switch out my ball if I'm shooting over water. It helps me commit more to my shot. Loosing balls is expensive! I'm working on my pre-shot routine to actually eliminate practice swings completely. Hoping it makes a difference!
@@fromduffertodriver thanks. An 8 two sevens and 71 for the other 15 holes. To be fair, there are 4 par 3's under 125 yds and 4 par 4's under 300 yds. So if you take my 22 on the 3 "proper" holes it's more indicative. But I parred the 18th and that's what brings you back isn't it.
What Breaking 100 Looks Like is carrying a scorecard pencil with an eraser + mulligan on 1st tee, playing every OB shot as a lateral hazard, rechipping with a different wedge to get the shot right and blowing off 2-3 footers you know we might miss if we tried. Actually breaking 100 looks like keeping tee shots between the trees, developing wizardry with recovery shots when that doesn’t happen, not hitting driver every single hole, and finally feeling like you have an idea around and on the green. Approach shots will still be all over the place, but will at least have some distance to them. Also a 14 club bag is overkill when learning. 10 to 12 is more than fine. Ok to own a full set and even some extra clubs for fun, but not necessary to bag all of them.
I'm going to try a round where I take out my trouble clubs, so my driver 3w and hybrid, with a focus of just staying on the fairway. I'll post a video on how it goes!
@@fromduffertodriver Thank you. I will keep at it. I really need to get fitted for clubs and also take a lesson or two. I'm 6'9" and use regular sized clubs and i have to bend over way too much to make solid contact with the ball and not top it. Also when I first started golfing I had no idea what the different types of irons were and I unfortunately bought a set of nike blades on ebay (because they were cheap) and they are the hardest irons to hit on the face of the earth. But when you do get a sweet spot hit, they are amazing. lol.
I’m 67 and have been playing since I was 12. Never broke 80. Never broke 40. More inconsistent than ever. Call myself Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde. I can birdie a hole and the very next hole triple bogey. Played with men in their 80’s who hit from the senior tee’s and they beat the snot out of me. They only hit the ball 150 yards each time but it was right down the middle. One old man had several pars and the rest were bogies. He ended up shooting 41. Me 57. I was totally embarrassed.
We've all been there! I played with some guys who were shooting Par every hole, and I was going from Bogey to Quadruple Bogey every other hole. This game is very up and down: one minute you're playing the best golf of your life, the next minute you forget how to hold your club properly.
