Director David O. Russell reveals the emotional connection he and stars Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper have to their Oscar-nominated movie. Find out how these personal connections impacted the making of the film.
De Niro is a very private person and doesn't do a lot of interviews, so for him to come on live TV in front of a studio audience and thousands of others watching at home and to show that type of emotion and be so moved by this film is a testament to his character and the film itself. Thanks for sharing
He was for decades, but he changed in the last couple of decades; he appeared on SNL several times (even hosting once), appeared on Letterman, and even appeared on a Comedy Central roast. Be broke out of that shell in his late 50s or so
When a man like Robert De Niro shows his true feelings, the only reaction I can have is greater respect for him. And admiration for this awesome legend.
When most of the time you’re strong and collected, it gives you great value to moments of vulnerability. Bob comes from a time when dignity was the book people live by

As a mom who has a son with autism I can affirm his feelings are raw and real. Makes me love and respect the man more than ever. These kids are beautiful and complicated and no one knows how difficult and heartbreaking It can sometimes be unless you live it.
+Immortan Joe you ask a very important question and while I can't speak for others, I am absolutely NOT offended, however be very careful because there are snake oil people who prey on vulnerable parents with promises of a cure. I can say that most times if someone is out there with new information of a so called cure: we are already aware of it 😀 and depending how far we are in our journey, we either are looking into it or have determined it is a crock of shit. As far as the question would I cure my son's autism if I could: absolutely , 100 percent. And before someone comes on here accusing me of not loving and accepting my son as he is ( not you kind sir , there are many self righteous special need parents and high functioning autistic individuals who Vilify parents if they say they don't see autism as a blessing ) my words to them are. "If you are able to type on a computer and articulate your thoughts to be able to judge me then you are talking about TWO totally ( cont )
+Immortan Joe different kinds of autism . Autism has taken my son's voice, his ability to make friends, his ability to read , write, be unsupervised , live independently , have children , hold down a job etc etc. He is 22 and a wonderful boy but I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to give him a cure. The only thing that is offensive is someone trying to tell us parents we don't love our children as they are if we would cure them that is bullshit and I will defend my decision to my dying day . Which brings up the terror of who will care for him when I'm gone. So my answer is yes yes yes!!! And if anyone wants to judge me : bring it on because I am sick and tired of defending myself. If a child was born with cancer would they say well curing him would not be accepting him as he is? Of course not. It's the same thing with severe autism . I hope I was able to answer your question and thank you for giving me a chance to explain my view point. 😀
This isn't the first time i've seen Robert De Niro cry off screen. Another time was at an interview clip that shown during his AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony back in 2003. He was talking about the making of the Deer Hunter and the Vietnam vets. What an amazing person and my favorite movie from his catalogue.
De Niro is a great actor. Even his lesser known roles in movies like The Mission, Awakenings, Men of Honor, and Meet The Parents show off the sheer ability of the man.
he's one of the best comedy actors ever but doesnt really get talked about as such. he has lots of laugh out loud scenes in this movie and obviously in meet the parents he was as funny as anyone's ever been in a movie I think
I don’t think Meet the Parents is “lesser known” if anything younger people, I think, know De Niro for those films than anything. Tho I will say Awakenings, Ronin and The Score are probably some of his most underrated performances ever. But IMO, Taxi Driver, Heat, Raging Bull, Awakenings, Deer Hunter and Silver Linings Playbook are De Niro’s greatest performances because they felt like he was portraying a real/honest character and not playing a caricature of himself.
I have bipolar disorder in my family. So many do. What impacts you is that you relate to the victim - how much they depend on the right balance of medication, how ashamed and guilty they feel when they're not in control of their minds yet retain the intelligence to see themselves out-of-control yet unable to do anything about it.
The connection between David Russell, Bradley Cooper and Robert Di Niro is beyond authentic and so moving. I have great respect for all three of these men, and Robert Di Niro is a superb human in so many ways.
You can tell Bradley Cooper wanted to cry in the moment he saw Robert's face. Jesus, any man sitting next to crying Robert fucking De Niro would be drowning in his own tears. Love the man, love the actor. He should win another Oscar before he retires just because he's the greatest actor alive. No matter for what film. Just give him any awards there are.
+ubernaffa I won't be able to get away with only one night, I've just booked nightmares for a month, at least! Daym, this looks freaky... She was never a beauty, but she's a hell of a beast! And she keeps talking! For fuck's sake, lady, try to pretend that you have a heart and a soul...
Bradley calmly reaching over to console DeNiro is one of those things that breaks my heart for how genuine it is. Being there but giving them space, too. Mad respect.
I just watched the HBO documentary on De Niro Sr., simply amazing!! I think that that de Niro Jr is referring to his father and some of his struggles with depression, Two amazing men De Niro Sr and Jr!
I used to always like Robert Deniro. Then he said all those things about Donald Trump. And I must admit, I was frustrate with Deniro. Obviously, he and I have a very different view on Donald Trump. Then, I watch this video... 9 years after it is posted... and as much as I am still frustrated that he and I can't see the same way on certain things, I tear up watching this because I know that he is just another human being like me who can and does care deeply for others when they are hurting or have problems... and my frustration with him just disappears. :) Hopefully the same could be said about me. Anyhow, thanks for posting this video and allowing all of us to re-visit such a touching moment!
Love this comment. Thank you. So many Trump supporters honestly hate him, for voicing his opinion. Just like anyone can and do. Just because he has different political views than you doesn’t make him a bad person or less than human. Thank you for your comment.
I truly think Deniro was touched by what he said. The compliments he gave him before he was asked that question. You can tell his eyes were watery before he answered
I know how you feel. I've suffered from severe depression for over two years and it has been a really dark period of my life. Luckily I learned enough about myself and it made me more mature in the end. Feeling helpless and alone is a very harsh and cruel emotion. The truth is that there are always people around us who truly love us and make us feel better. But when you are in this situation you tend get away from all these people. Don't! Get out of the house, talk to people and LET GO!
The depth of his empathy and compassion is extraordinary, and one of the many reasons his acting ability is all-time great. My respect for him as both an artist and a man has grown by the year.
One of my favorite movies and actors of all time just secured a deeper place of gratitude in my heart after watching this. i only wish that the host gave him more time to gather his thoughts cause it looked like he had more to say. Intense moment. De Niro is a class act
I love Christoph Waltz, love him to death as an actor and he did a wonderful job in Django, but I think De Niro was snubbed at the Oscars. This was the first movie in a long time where we saw the emotional depth and variety with which he played this part.
This, in my opinion, is one of Robert De Niro’s most underrated performances. It’s the first time in a while where he wasn’t playing a caricature of himself like in Meet the Parents and Analyze This. He was playing a real character, a father trying to rebuild his connection with his son but doesn’t know how to.
This, IMO, was one of Robert De Niro’s greatest performance since Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Deer Hunter, Heat etc. Silver Linings Playbook was first time since those said films where De Niro felt like he was portraying a real/honest character and not a caricature of himself like in Analyze This, Meet the Parents etc. Especially his emotional speech he gives in the film, it felt like De Niro at his most honest.
First of all I didn't think that Bradley laughed at 2:14 because he thought that it was funny that Robert got emotional but instead he laughed because Katie gave him a tissue and we all know that Robert is not a man who is likely to show his emotions in public, as a matter of fact I know that Bradley and Robert are close friends and the amount of respect that Bradley has for him(we all do because Robert is a great human being),that's why he's covering his face cause it's an unpleasant situation
My dad suffers from bipolar depression and i dont want to go the the doctor and really know for sure if i have it or not but im pretty sure i do.. its very hard and very stressful even though i dont really have it on a high scale, its a very serious matter.. psicological illnesses are so insane and so overlooked..
The touching part is it's not a performance. Robert De Niro leaves a real part of his life on the screen in that role. Being suddenly sucked into that emotional place and then be present enough to use that emotion to deliver emotion is a vulnerable and brave place to act from. Blessed to have seen this role and a great movie.
Robert De Niro is a man among man. During shooting Deer Hunter studio wanted to fire John Cazale because he was dying of cancer. De Niro put up his own salary to pay for his insurance
I love RDN more in this moment. I love a man who's not afraid to show his vulnerable side. Love him to the moon and back and to the moon again. Hope I can hug him tight and kiss those tears away.
my guess: De Niro had previously neglected the mental illness of someone in his own life. It's not uncommon unfortunately; it seems like guilt coming through, and a cathartic moment of embracing the conversation, both there on the couch, and with the movie in general.
I seen this and it brought me to tears because I myself suffer from this mental illness and its tough going through life being 30 yrs old and suffering from bipolar disorder or known as maniac depression.. It's a life struggle for me but I just thank god everyday I wake up.. I'm hoping that this disease gets looked into more and that more advanced treats can be diagnosed.. My hat goes off to mr de Niro and Bradley cooper for casting in this movie.. Millions of people suffer from this I'm one
+Tonyo1221 Not everyone. Some people don't want to talk to people who are crying because they probably feel like they don't want to be bothered. I think it's better to ask "Are you okay?" instead of just leave someone crying because it'll show that they care.
Robert De Niro have always invested in his important characters, his important roles, and by doing that makes us love his work. That makes for a TRUE and REAL person.
These guys look like they are off the cast of Goodfellas with their reaction.. True men! Noone is made of stone, and there are things that make us all hurt inside, we are all human; mortal. Even great stoic men like De Niro feels deeply
What's crass about what I said? Watch the video again: when she's handing De Niro a tissue, Cooper is covering his face to try and hide it, but you can clearly see him smiling. It's obviously awkward and uncomfortable for him, and many people react in those kinds of situations by giggling nervously. (Plus there's the fact that Robert De Niro - one of the most notoriously stoic and taciturn actors alive - just started crying in an interview. It must've felt very bizarre.) I'm not judging him.

When Russell was describing the frustration of when you are desperately wanting to help someone with their problems, all I could think of was of my girlfriend and her alcohol problem and mental health issues and how helpless I was at times, but I stayed with her. She died of a heart attack last year. She was 31.
I understand completely, as a person whose father suffers from bipolar, it is not easy at all to cope at times. I can't wait to see this film and see how they portray mental illness. Robert De niro is and always will be a legend.
I heard in an interview this morning Robert De Niro has experienced mental health issues in his family as well. Supposedly Robert is a very private person, not a man of many words. This glimpse of his emotion was very touching.
Any chance you can post more excerpts of your show today as it is not available online? Outstanding cast, wonderful film and a very important subject. I am so sorry I missed it. Please show us more of it if possible?
I've watched it more than once and never noticed him smiling. Did you ever think that Cooper was trying to hide his own emotion at the time? And even if he did laugh, as you pointed out...some react with laughter when faced with heavy emotion. And if that was the case, it is crass to point that out.
I fear and it's terrible to say that but I dare to think and I'm almost sure that his Elliott son's disease is the cause of the terrible bend taken by the actor at the early 2000's 'til nowadays with movies of reduced demands, artistically mediocre, without stakes and frantic (except some good movie like Happiness Therapy or The Irishman last year). Something has devoured the hopes of this man, dragged him on something extremely painful and nourished with bitterness
I feel like something was on his mind that day also. Maybe about David O Russell’s son too who had some struggles. But I can tell he’s about to cry even when they’re talking about a funny moment. Just seems like not only emotional subject matter for him, but caught him in a vulnerable place then. His emotions and rawness are what make him so powerful and unique and able to relate to his characters with such depth.
@marneebox I don't think his son is bipolar, but I think his youngest son Elliott is autistic or he learns a little slower than kids his age. I think but I could be wrong.
I have really felt for years and years that i knew Robert De Niro was dealing with some of the same mental health issues i am dealing with. I have noticed in his interviews like this on talk shows, letterman etc he is very quiet and tense. I know how you feel Rob. But imagine feeling bullied because of it, thats my situation.
Je vous aime Mr. Robert et Bradley. Vous avez touchés mon coeur. Vous êtes sensible, receptif et attentif l'un pour l'autre. Vous êtes authentique. I love you
so he got emotional ecuz he knew what david o.russells' son was going through when he was yelling at him during the scene, cuz robert was so in the moment of screaming at him and he knew matthew was laughing during the scene cuz of his bipolarity disorder?
De Niro has just expressed grief that millions of people experience EVERY DAY on planet earth. It's not special when he expresses it. I can't believe the stupid pedestal that the gullible public place these actors on
I know precisely what he is going through. I am have a mental disorder and believe me, it's hard. There is nothing worse than a feeling of helplessness. Never feel ashamed of who you are and don't let your issues and problems define you.
I agree with you on one level, my father does use bipolar as an excuse to be an arsehole but A LOT of people do have it and can't help their actions for the most part.
