However, on average, most patients can expect the following overview of recovery after hernia surgery. Learn more by reading our webpage on hernia recovery: www.californiah....

Hello Dr. Harris. Thank you very much for your informative videos and explanations. You are helping a lot of folk and it's greatly appreciated. I'm a very fit 37 year old male. I've had laparoscopic TAPP surgery with mesh on an inguinal hernia about 10 weeks ago. I was told by my surgeon that I would be able to resume to light jogging after 2 weeks with no restrictions at around 4-6 weeks. I had a decent amount of pain and discomfort during the healing process, did not want to risk anything and only returned to jogging/sports by week 6 once I got pain free. I ran 2, 4 and 5 miles within the first week combined with mobility exercises and light weight training to get some core strength back with no pain or issues. At week 7 I helped a friend move a couch while wearing a lifting belt. Unfortunately a day after I started feeling a every so slight burning sensation that became more intense within a few days. I freaked out and started to feel/press/pull my abdominal area over and over again to look for signs of a recurring hernia. No bump. By doing so I feel like I irritated a lymph or nerv (or scar) from repetitive pressing and touching it multiple times a day. Could the burning/pulling sensation come from that? Could it be scar tissue that is stretching? What are the chances of a recurring hernia and the mesh failing after lifting the couch? I did rest for a week with no change. It's been two weeks now with a burning/pulling sensation. Would you recommend rest or return to light running? Thank you!
@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists
Our patients are able to return to full activities after 3 weeks since at that point the strength of the repair is 90%. It would be very unlikely to cause a recurrent hernia at the 7 week mark. Many patients find that they have muscle strains or pulls when resuming activity after taking a long break before surgery and during recovery.

I’m on Day 3 of recovery. I’m already completely off pain medicine. Don’t be scared, friends. I’m 43, in good health but nothing special. I had a right side inguinal hernia mesh repair - and during my examination my surgeon detected a weakness on the left too, so he meshed that preemptively. All done in one operation, laparoscopically. My right hernia was slightly higher up compared to the average inguinal, I’m told, but I can’t say whether that really effected my comfort after the operation. Day 1 is rough - but not unbearable. No need to be worried. I didn’t even need the opioid painkillers. I stuck to a Tylenol + Aleve combo. Icing is a must. I did 20-30mins on/off for the first 2 days. Helped a lot. Remember to ice your balls too - they swell. I iced in bed right before sleeping, but didn’t do it again until the morning. I had help, but I kept ice packs in a small cooler by the couch, and in another small cooler by the bed for convenience anyway. Also, get up and walk around the room for a few of the 20mins phases when you’re not icing yourself - walking sooner rather than later has speeded up my recovery significantly. Seriously, do it Day 1. Diet is super important: you really, really don’t want to get constipated from the painkillers. So for 2 days BEFORE the operation, I ate vegan/vegetarian meals with high fiber. The afternoon/evening after my surgery, I only drank plain chicken broth (just liquid) with a little fiber powder in it, with salt and herbs, and a handful of saltine crackers. Felt SO GOOD after the pre-surgery fasting. Also has a nice dose of protein in it, which helps. Day 2, I upgraded to lentil soup with crackers and some peanut butter on wholewheat toast. Felt AMAZING. I read someone’s advice not to over-hydrate immediately after surgery until you’ve peed. Apparently there’s a risk of the bladder not waking up immediately after surgery, so by drinking too much too fast, they needed to go to the ER to get a catheter. So I did drink some water in the recovery room, but was cautious at home until I peed the first time. I started taking stool softeners the evening of the operation, and took them again in the morning and evening of Day 2. I also drank a cup of Smooth Move tea each day. Day 1, I lay down propped up when I wasn’t up and walking. Day 2, I made myself to sit in a regular chair to get myself ready to sit on the toilet. I had my first bowel movement in the evening of on Day 2, without giving myself an enema, thankfully. However, I had some home ones on hand just in case. Likewise, I had Milk of Magnesia on standby, but so far haven’t needed it. In short: hydration + lentil soup + stool softeners is a winner. I’m on Day 3 now. Trying not to get cocky, but I managed to shower fairly comfortably this morning and I’m off pain meds completely. A couple of other handy bits: I was very lucky: my surgeon gave me ‘mobile blood clot prevention’ things that are basically compression socks that have a little motor that squeezes your calf every minute or so. I wore them while I was sleeping and I think they’ve been a good addition. But even if you don’t get those, regular compression socks will also do the trick, no doubt. Also, after my intubation my throat was quite sore and I often had to cough, which is very painful. A throat numbing spray was a great help. If you have people taking care of you, make sure they take Covid tests and don’t have a regular cough/cold - you definitely don’t want to be coughing or sneezing during your recovery. And that’s everything so far! I was so grateful for the accounts and advice I found in places like this, so this is me thanking all you strangers and paying it forward. Truly, don’t be scared - it’s been nowhere near as bad as I feared - you can do it, friends! Power up!!

@@robyescombe Oh Rob you are so kind to reach out and ask me how I am doing ❤️ I wish I had better news for you but sadly I am in the hospital with Pneumonia! I had my hernia surgery on Friday the 17th and was sent home that afternoon. I pretty much just dosed and took my pain meds thay night, Saturday day and Saturday night. But when I woke up Sunday morning I knew something wasn't right as I felt short of breath and had tightness in my chest. I have an oxygen meter that goes on your finger and when I used it it said my oxygen was only 76 (with 99/100 being the normal range. So off to the ER I went where the discovered I have pneumonia and admitted me 😩 I am on oxygen and there was some talk about weening me off oxygen and sending me home today but I have since gotten some fluid in my lungs (what is known as a plural effusion) and now we are working to get that cleared up before I can go home. All of that aside I will say if I was going to recover from a hernia surgery there is no better place to be then the hospital because their beds can raise and lower you (no ab muscles required) and they have all the pain relievers a person could ask for so all in all it's not a bad place to be 😁 🤞 everything clears up soon and I can get outta here and be on the road to a stronger healthier future ❤️ Thank you again for checking in on me!

Bnols Nols, We hope that your recovery continues to go smoothly and that you are back to 100% in the near future. Although you are correct that every patient is different, about 90% of our patients feel back to normal after 3 weeks. I agree, there would be no motivation for any surgeon to artificially shorten the expected recovery for patients. In fact, it would benefit us more to artificially extend the expected recovery to help reduce phone calls and work for our offices. Best, CAHS

This is day 18 after surgery and I have pain in my left side that goes from mild, if sitting or in bed, to excruciating if I walk or when moving out of bed. But, then that stabbing pain goes away and I can walk carefully to at least get some exercise in the house. Taking Ibuprofen every six hours. April 12(in 12 days) is when I do the followup. Had zero swelling in my groin and kept in and my stomach iced for the first few days. Bud Dealcor, You are very right in that ice on the area of the hernia surgery is one of the best things you can do after your surgery. Not only does this reduce swelling and bruising, but it also acts to greatly reduce your pain during those first few days. Some patients who use a lot of ice, can avoid taking excessive amount of pain killers during the first 2-3 days after surgery. Thank you for your advice to our other patients, CAHS

@x31moose
@x31moose 5 лет назад
I had open inguinal hernia surgery with Dr. Harris and the surgery went smoothly. But my pain finally reduced to a manageable level after 10 days. So expect minimum 10 days to be able to get up from your bed without significant pain. The post op instructions were insufficient and weak, I had to do a lot of internet research to find out why I was running a low grade fever, why my stomach was bloated, and the use of an Enema to help the first bowel movement (what a relief!) Also Lazyboy recliner is a must (better yet to have the one that lift you up), had I known I would have bought a lift chair / recliner before the surgery. days 2-5 were the most painful. Need lots of sleep so I took Advil PM, your body repairs much better if you get sufficient sleep every day. I am definitely on the road to recovery but it still hurts around the cut/scar area and also when I sneeze or cough after 4 weeks. 4-7 days of recovery is really a marketing ploy, it's more like 4 to 7 weeks for open surgery.

Had mine repaired 5 days ago. Waited to long had it for about 5 years big as a grapefruit but had no pain was to scared to go through with. But Wednesday the 22nd of this month June it got incarcerated let me tell you that was the worst pain I ever had in my life went to the ER low blood pressure sweating like a dog and dry mouth. They rushed me in emergency because of the low blood pressure they did a CAT scan and that's where they told me it was incarcerated so I'm on the 5th day when they did the incision it was just like a minor pain for about one day I don't have any more pain of the scar where they cut me open the only thing that you go through like 4 days after your testicles swell up and penis and it gets purple and it just feels like your testicles are pulling you but other than that I don't feel any pain thank God for having such a big hernia so I would advise you my friend to go ahead and go through with it it's not all that bad it's all in the mind you'll be you'll be okay I went home the same day. Good luck to you and I hope everything goes good for you oh and I forgot to say just took about 4 Advils that's and can walk with no problem he prescribed me tramadol for paid but no need for it. 🙏

Hello arshad. One of the biggest tips I can give it not to lift anything heavy or any sudden movements as I found out and the mesh had teard into 2 different places.. I currently wear a metal braced corset which I will wear for life that helps deal with the pain from the adhesions. Try and keep eclxercising as much as you can but only gentle exercise. Try not to stretch much in the abdominal area. Sleeping with a pillow arched in my abdominals seems to work well as I don't have any abdominal muscles.

You comment very little about pain. Unfortunately I find that doctors pay little attention to pain. Im in my fourth day and I still hurt. I'm glad I had the surgery but the matter of pain control options should be at the top of discussion for post operation recovery. My doctor sent me home with 5 mg percaset every 6 hours. He upped it to 10 mg every 4 hours. I added ibuprofen with his ok. I'm still in bad pain, about a 5 on the 1-10 scale.
@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists
@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists 5 лет назад
D Judson, You are correct in that most patients have mild to moderate pains after hernia surgery for anywhere from 1-7 days. We also prescribe Percocet to take during this time. However, all surgeons have to balance providing adequate pain relief with not over prescribing pain medications to every one of our patients. Studies show that the average hernia patient requires 6 tablets of the Percocet 5/325 dose pills in the post operative period. We tend to prescribe 20 of those pills to allow enough pain relief during the first days/week. We hope that your pain continues to resolve in the coming days, CAHS

I read so much variety of reports I was afraid this would feel like hell, so far its mild, it's like a sore muscle. Just be careful getting up and down. I am taking the pain meds and plan to go for 3-4 days. So far surprised how mild pain is. I had laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair six (6) months ago and it has been horrible. My condition is actually worse than before the surgery. My right testicle has been swollen and inflamed and is still approximately 100% larger than my left testicle. My condition is worse because of the pain and aching associated with my testicle being affected as opposed to just the less sensitive abdominal material that would occasionally protrude though my abdominal wall. My condition is affecting my activity level. I cannot walk for extended periods of time before the aching spreads to my lower belly area causing an upset stomach and ultimately headaches. I am dealing with chaffing because of the abnormal size of my right testicle. I can no longer complete a full yoga workout, ride a bike or jog/run and this has caused my physical condition to continually decline since the surgery. I have lost notable muscle mass, flexibility and my energy level is continually lessening. I am considering have the testicle removed.

It is now more than 8 months since my surgery (May 25, 2023) and I still have the symptoms. I got a 2nd opinion from a urologist and was told I had the hernia repair caused a hydrocele (sack around my testicle [but under my scrotum] is filled with peritoneal fluid) which is a condition that will not go away on its own and I will now need a 2nd, more invasive surgery involving making an incision just below the belt line and dissecting down to the hole in the muscle layer. The hydrocele lining is then removed from the scrotum. I will not be able to work for 4 - 7 weeks after the procedure and will be left permanently scarred. If I do not have the surgery, I am at risk of developing another hernia on the opposite side and I have an increased risk of the hydrocele masking the presence of testicular cancer until the cancer becomes inoperable resulting in my death.@@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists

I had a double (one above my belly button, one below) hernia repair surgery, using mesh to repair my hernias on Oct 10th. It's now Dec 22 and I'm hurting as bad as I ever did before. The pain is horrible right this very second. I have been very careful since surgery. No lifting more than 15 lbs, no riding dirtbikes, no physical activities of any kind. I'm hardly able to do my job properly and its just a retail job. I am experiencing the same pain I had before the surgery. Very frustrating.

Without knowing more details we would suggest that you see your hernia surgeon to get advice on what might be causing your pains. Best, CAHS

i had my surgery 3 weeks ago, no complications as such. but just one concern, i have a lump where the scar is, it started out as a seroma, now its kind of hard. Doctor told me that it should shrink over time. But he also said that if it doesnt shrink they might need to operate!!!!!! i am do disappointed!! as i thought everything was going to be ok!!
@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists
Seromas are very common after any surgery including hernia surgery and almost always resolve on their own.

I'm surprised you didn't make a comment about lifting 50 lbs 4 days after surgery. I lifted 100 lbs after 6 days and unlimited after 10 days. I had the surgery in Cleveland be Dr Grischkan. His recovery plan is to take one week to return to all activities. He used a modified Shouldice method with mesh. The recovery requires walking 4 hours a day, starting the day of the surgery. In the first 2 1/2 days after surgery I walked 26 miles, all of it pain free, I could walk at a fast pace. All inguinal hernias should be done with this method the recovery is incredible.

It’s my fourth day after my umbilical hernia surgery operation… And I am still very sore, I find it hard to stand up straight when I try and walk to the bathroom… The only thing that I’m worried about at night time is the amount of pain in my chest and back when I breathe… Which I’ve read could be from when I was under anesthesia? Wasn’t sure if someone could explain this to me I have my two week follow up coming up but I was just curious. Also is sleeping on my side with a pillow OK? Since I find it hard to breathe on my back and I haven’t been getting much sleep. Love your page!

I’ve had 3 inguinal hernia surgery’s and am now 40 years old. My last surgery was 2 years ago. After my last surgery, the surgeon told me I should never do push ups, pull ups or any heavy weights. He even told me that I should never plan to do long hikes etc. Why is this the case if you are saying I should be able to recover fully. Please could you shed some detail on this as it is very confusing and seems to contradict what you are saying. 2 years on, and I still have weekly pain. Am I that 1% that will have this pain for the rest of my life and never be able to tone my abs again?
@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists
@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists 6 лет назад
Wesley, We would certainly defer to your primary surgeon on what he/she says about your activities. However, most surgeons that we know allow their patients to return to normal activities including hiking and heavy lifting. Most studies don't show that limiting your activities is a way to prevent a hernia from recurring. Regarding your pain, if you still having pain since the last surgery 2 years ago, then yes, you might be that 1% who has 'chronic pain'. We discuss chronic pain in more detail on our website: californiaherniaspecialists.com/chronic-pain-hernia-surgery/

Just seems to be a very short time to step right back into a full blown exercise and or work lifting etc..... I heard about to many meshes that failed within the first yr.

Frankie Pitochelli, Each patient is certainly able to follow their own body during recovery and only return to activities when they are ready. @@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists .....Btw...thank you for your reply, your info is definitely helpful, on my 4th day and the pain is gone, soreness and swollen a bit, but, mostly, went much better than I expected . I put it off for 4 yrs and looking back, it was short sighted to procrastinate on surgery, I guess it was easier to just push the hernia back in " over a hundred times a day at the least"...however, thx for the reply and feeling much better at the 4 day mark. Just hoping the mesh will hold out for the long run. Best wishes.

I had surgery 20 days ago and I had diastasis recti and incisional umbilical hernia that was 5 inches by 2.5 inches and 15-25cm mesh used. He said my muscles were completely separated and he had to pull them back together. My question is I’m still having pain that I’m managing with Tylenol every 6 hours, is this normal? I have the electric shocks which I know are the nerves regenerating, but I’m getting tired of being in pain. I can’t walk very far or fast, but I do have good moments. When are the bad moments going to end and be able to feel normal and pain free? Mine was done laparoscopically robotically. I feel pulling too. The mesh is a little above my belly button to just behind my pubic bone. Thanks

Jennifer, Having a large hernia and diastasis repaired can be a longer and more difficult recovery than a simple small hernia. Pains and burning are expected and may last for weeks/months. Good luck in your ongoing recovery, CAHS

This gives me hope, I am only on day 12 with robotic mesh surgery and I am climbing the walls wondering how I can wait 6 weeks to resume anything. I don't feel anything other than extremely minor discomfort, so I have been doing some elliptical work as well as minor movements (bicep curls, triceps) with 10 pounds dumbbells. It makes alot more sense that by week 3 I should be able to start resuming normal activities starting light. It never made sense that a generic blanket statement of 6 weeks, nothing more than 10 to 20 pounds would apply to everyone. Previous to my hernia surgery, I was working out 6 days a week so surely I am different than an 80 year old who is overweight and never works out? Yet, they would get the same generic advice from their doctors. Ridiculous if you ask me.

Matthew, we're sorry to hear about your recurrent hernia's. Recurrence rates with a mesh are about 1-2% and without mesh as high as about 20%. Some patients have weak connective tissues and have a higher chance of having a hernia recurrence so this is likely your case. Good luck in your care, CAHS

If I can get any help on this please Its about 4 month since my surgery and my doc told me not to lift weights from 6 month to a year So I followed it And I usually just walk a very long distance sometimes and do some short running and jumping But my question is My scar is still not totally white Its a bit brown Will it get to normal color? And when wearing pants with the thread or belt I feel sometimes some little activity in that part like some thing is being stretched And not much pain but still some sudden quick jerk type thing And when I try to stretch my body Or sit by crossing legs That time also when I stretch around I feel some sensation there So is it normal?? And is it okay to stretch body i mean it wont tear the mesh inside right? And near the cut part when I try to pull skin like other part of body It pains in some part.. So is anything wrong?

We always suggest following your surgeons instructions after surgery. Scars take time to soften and become less noticeable, sometimes that takes a year or more. Our patients return to their full sports and active lifestyle at the 3 week mark including stretching and lifting.
