This is the third in my occasional 'Looking for a lost Canal' strand in my Canal Series, and in this one I head to the county of Somerset to look for the legacy of the technically advanced Chard Canal.

What an utterly fascinating episode! A lost canal with quite a bit of infrastructure! None of it still visible. All the more fascinating for the mystery surrounding a lot of it! Thanks for that, Paul.

Hi Paul another fascinating episode, your enthusiasm to share these places and features with us, shines through it all. Ron

Thank you Ron! Sorry I have not had time to watch your latest video yet - I am very much looking forward to it, as Bewdley is one of my very favourite places (I was there for the pre-carnival fireworks recently!) and I have never had a good look at Bewdley's Station - only been through on the train. Another time I filmed a Santa Special go through, but the station itself was closed. Yes, this was a little frustrating not being able to get to the portals of the tunnels and the inclined planes, but it was still and interesting explore to do. Hopefully, Part Two will reveal some more secrets! Always great to hear from you - take care, Paul

Ah thanks for linking. We really did skim this canal in a day. I would like to go back and explore some more one day. Cheers for the info, very enjoyable. You did well to avoid Liledown southern portal. The route down was quite severe and the portal itself is something else!!

Thank you Paul. That's made me more intrigued to find the portals now - maybe in the late autumn when the vegetation is less abundant! Happy filming, Take care, Paul

Hi Paul, excellent exploration, thoroughly enjoyed watching, well done!! The aqueducts were great finds, maybe the one the farm more so as it was such an unexpected place to find one. Aren't cows inquisitive, I hope one or two have become subscribers!! You did right to avoid those steep slippy paths, especially near to the portal. I've been searching for the devils tunnel recently and started off down a marked path between precipices but it was just simply not worth the risk especially being on your own, so I turned around. That I think concludes my explorations until it's cooler. I did find photos of it!! I see the WCW official swan mascot made an appearance today, perfect timing!! Thanks for keeping going despite the weather and look forward to part two. After which I will watch the PW version!! Have a great weekend!!

Thank you David! Hope all is well with you. - yes, the swan! Always great to see one! Yes, I really enjoyed this explore, even though it was a tad frustrating at times. I do hope there will be more to see on the next one. It may be worth that I try one of the portals here again when the vegetation dies back a bit in the late autumn. Take care, Paul

Although you have been disappointed by what you didn't see, I was amazed by what you did see, it was not easy. You were somewhat held back by cattle & steep slippery slopes. Great video Paul.

Thank you Faith - I was a little dissapointed, but there was still a fair bit to see. Yes, cattle! They held me up later on filming too! But, best to play safe always. Thanks for a lovely comment, Take care, Paul

Cheers Paul interesting l bet the aqueduct looked impressive in it's day across the road 👍👍👍
@westcountrywanderings
@westcountrywanderings 29 дней назад
Yes, that would have been quite a sight seeing a boat go across it Lee! There is a substantial aqueduct across a major road (A350 road from Chippenham in Wiltshire to Poole in Dorset), which carries the Kennet & Avon Canal (near Semmington), but unfortunately it is a modern aqueduct, and doesn't have the grandeur of this one. Thanks for watching! Paul

Enjoyed your walk to the Chard / Bridgewater & Taunton canal . My passion is the Cotswold Canal which was also , almost lost due to the railway competition . I lived in the Brimscombe valley when the original Polly Basin as it was known went rafting on it in the summer & skated on it in the bad winter of early 1960s . Now live only 4 miles from the Leeds & Liverpool in East Lancs .

Thank you - glad you enjoyed it. I have now made some 25+ videos on the Cotswold Canals, both with my regular CCT restoration updates, and my 'Secrets of....' (both the Stroudwater and T&S Canals) Series - I have another one of those coming soon. I know exactly where Polly Basin was - I live just a couple of miles away. Such a shame that redevelopment of Brimscombe Port has been delayed again because of the developer (St. Modwen) being bought by Blackstone Developments (huge American conglomerate) and concerns too over the vast amounts of asbestos waste that was buried in Brimscombe area by the former Fibrecrete Factory. I will continue to bring developments about that on my channel. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Cheers, Paul

I guess times do change and infrastructure does become unused, but really some of these amazing places are ripe for the discovery and bring back for all to re-enjoy once again.

Yes, they certainly are Bruce! It will be good to see the 'mainline' canal (Bridgwater to Taunton Canal) reopened again following repairs at the docks and to that wall. Cheers, Paul

Very nice walk Paul. Yes, it's always best to let caution be your guide when exploring some areas. A nasty fall would make for a bad day. As for the cows, you should have told them to mooove out of the way😊👍
@westcountrywanderings
@westcountrywanderings Месяц назад
Thank you Daryl! Yes, you have to be particularly careful when you are on your one, and often these sorts of places have very poor or non existent mobile phone coverage too. I was debating to tell the cows to moove (!) but I didn't fancy coming between them and that wall, in case they had other ideas! If there was a clear route out, I would have done so. Cheers, Paul

Some great finds, especially the wonderful canal bridge and picturesque aqueduct, the outlines of an inclined plane and the remains of another aqueduct at the farm. Frustrating not to get a clear view of the tunnel portal, but who knows what you might find on your next visit. Very enjoyable exploration. Thank you.

Really fascinating Paul and very enjoyable. I am especially looking forward to the next episode as I Iived in Chaffcombe till I was 12 and cycled past the reservoir everyday after I started going to school in Ilminster. (Not all the way on my bike). I also cycled over a small hump bridge just before the main road and had no idea why it was there. I left my bike just around the corner at the Ship Inn and couldn’t understand why it was called that being well inland. Wonder if the hump is still there. I also didn’t know the canal went past the end of the field where we had to play hockey in Ilminster and could have escaped and explored if I had known. (Nor really. Too scared to duck out). Thank you. 🌻

Excellent video & this seems like an extremely interesting canal! Presumably the inclined planes would have a winch house at the top of the slopes? Wonder if there are any remains or stone foundations still evident?

Thank you Peter! I haven't come across any remains of any buidlings relating to the inclines as yet, but I will keep looking. More inclines to come in Part Two. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers, Paul

3.16k Hi Paul as usual an enjoyable , well researched video .Is there any plans to fix that wall from the 1st canal and bring it in to use ? I do hope so , hope all is well with you and yours

Thank you Mei - always great to hear from you. Yes, all good thanks! When I did my Bridgwater Port video a few months ago, just prior to filming all the boaters had been told that they had to vacate the port pending resoration and repairs, which were immient then. There is also that troublesome wall too. According to this, it should reopen later this summer, all being well: www.bridgwatermercury.co.uk/news/24327955.section-bridgwater-taunton-canal-soon-reopen/ I will try and do an update video on this later in the year. Take care, Paul

This was such a fascinating video. I like it when you become a sleuth- that does seem to be your ‘metier’ - you draw us all into your research!! It will always be Creech St Thomas to you! I know what it’s like to have an idee fixe. Do you think that comes from Cricket St Thomas also Somerset?? Ah love the cows - these looked inquisitive & happy to see you BUT & you can guess what I am going to say! They kill lots of people/ year. Saw the actual statistic the other day- & it is frightening. A retired GP living in the next village was trampled to death a few years back. I love the finger post signs- sadly seeing them less & less. As there was such a lot to take in I had to watch twice! And in the 1st run though you had made the provision for ads none were put in; 2nd time 2 adverts so no rhyme or reason!! I wasn’t consciously going to compare the 2 runs- just more awake than usual! I know of Paul Whitewick- would sub to him but as it is I find myself behind with the channels I do subscribe to !! Can I make a request if you do try again to find the route of this canal please please take someone with you!! You suggested Autumn and the slippery leaves & mud,rocks etc make me nervous after what we saw in the video!!! Thanks for an adsorbing 36minutes!

Thank you Diana! You are absolutely right about cows - they can be very dangerous, and I am always wary - I make sure that there is an escape route - the case here is that there was a wall, which I could have become trapped against, so it was a definite no no. I always assess their mood and check if there are any calves around. You could be right about Cricket St. Thomas! Wasn't that the home of Mr Blobby? I think it is one of Warners Hotels now as well as a zoo. It was also 'To The Manor Born'. Unfortunately, I don't have anyone that I can bring with me for an explore, but I will continue to be extra careful. I really don't know anyone else - certainly no one that is interested in canal exploration. Glad you enjoyed the explore, and I hope to do part two as soon as I am able, fitting it around my other video projects. Always great to hear from you. Take care, Paul

@@westcountrywanderings Thanks for your comprehensive reply! Oh sorry I just assumed ( assumption my worst fault) that you might know like minded canal enthusiasts. It does seem a dangerous hobby! Perhaps you could ask your daughter to visit? Just somebody who would know where you had been exploring & willing to be around on that day. Ohh and ‘what3 words’ That website could be very helpful for exact location finding. Apologies again! & thanks for the reply!

@dianarolph1770 I did keep both Louise (South West Sundays) and my parents aware of exactly where I was. Unfortunately, my daughter lives too far away in Cornwall to be able to do exploring in Somerset, and getting to/from Cornwall is always tricky this time of the year with horrendous traffic (incidents on the M5 seem to be daily) and very crowded trains, so I tend to reduce visits this time of the year until the autumn. Engaging with others is extremely difficult when you have autism! Thank you for your concern though - it is very much appreciated. Take care, Paul
