Dr. Lucy Jones and Dr. Kate Hutton rocked during the ‘94 quake. These ladies are the best professional women CalTech and USGS have. True gems and skilled at what they do.

Ugh. I was living in Brentwood at the time. She was a beacon of light during a really dark time. Thank you Dr. Lucy.

@@weworks7811 What?? The only Brentwood over the hill, 10 minutes away from the epicenter of the Northridge quake?? We're not talking about Tennessee. I thought that was obvious.

Thanks to all the hard work that Lucy Jones, Kate Hutton, and many other people did, we only had a single death (from a car falling off its jack/jack stands onto the man working on it, which can happen in the absence of an earthquake) and a couple dozen injuries in the series of earthquakes that struck later that year.

Hey, the same structures that make up the 5-14 Split in the Newhall Pass failed in both the Northridge earthquake and the 1971 Sylmar earthquake. I really hope Caltrans has learned its lesson from that, because it certainly did not learn it there between 1971 and 1994.

I just followed instinct. My wife was ok, so I immediately reported to the hospital that employed me.

Do you think LA is prepared for the next Big One?

I live in an HOA in Orange County and I can tell you that very few people here take it seriously. Some are minimally prepared while others are not prepared at all.

Not at all

Most people will try to prepare about 5 minutes AFTER it happens.

No. The whole state isn't ready. And they're gonna pay dearly for that one day.

Because of Dr Lucy Jones and having lived thru the Whittier Narrows, Loma Prieta and Northridge Quakes, the way I live in California is forever changed. I have 3 Ten gallon water bottles on hand, a very packed family earthquake kit and each bed in my hone has personal kits for each person. I keep hard soled slip on shoes and socks, a flash light and water next to each bed. And my kids, having never been thru a large quake understand why mommy does this because I've shown them news footage. They understand the gravity of being ready. Even our cars have kits and blankets. I'm not a doomsday kinda woman. But because of Dr. Jones, I'm an informed and prepared woman. And I'm not afraid. We're 2 weeks away from the 30 year anniversary of Northridge. And I'm ready for the next, hopefully quiet, 30 years but I'm ready just in case.
