As a kid I subscribed to the Beckett Monthly Magazine. Every month, it arrived in the mail, and I would tear through the pages to see the up and down arrows for the month. Dr. James Beckett is a hobby legend, and I'm excited to have a conversation with him and my friend Darren of ‪@returntocollecting‬ this week. In last week's episode, I asked: "What would you ask Dr. Beckett if you had the opportunity?" In this episode, I will discuss the topics I plan to go over and share many of the questions that you all submitted to him last week.

Good video Graig. Can’t wait for Dr Beckett!! The main reason that I collect is because I just enjoy it! It brings back my childhood days of riding my bike to the corner store and buying cards. Cards were everywhere! Rite Aid, Woolworth’s, even Valu Hardware. Every kid I knew collected cards. We would trade, compare, bring them everywhere. Rubber bands and shoeboxes were the preferred storage. I miss those days. Simpler times. These cards make me think of that and it makes me happy.

Graig, looking forward to the announcement and Dr. Beckett interview. Why do I collect cards? At this moment the simplest answer would be nostalgia. I got back into the hobby because I wanted to put together a 1965 topps set to give to my dad. Baseball and going to the games was a way of connecting for us. I knew as the youngest of eight that he didn’t get baseball cards as a kid and I thought it would be neat to give him the complete set from the year he graduated high school. Even though he passed before I could complete the goal I still feel a connection to him through collecting the cards of players we watched together.

I collect cards because I've found it's the gateway to my soul somehow? Such a big part of my life as a child, sorting, sorting and then resorting. My Dad once told me when I was a kid that "these are the best years of your life and you don't even know it." Not only were cards a big part but sports in general. Playing them in the street everyday with friends, watching them with my Dad, Grandpa and family. Going to games. You could always start a conversation with sports or watch a game together no matter what. Many of you who know me, know that I have been chasing "1976" for the better part of a decade. I guess I just don't want to grow up and prefer to "live in the past". On my way to High School and hoping for that 1976 Trans AM. Sad I know. I kinda miss my mom and dad, my grandparents, my plans for the future. Now, my only plans for the future are ending up on the right side of the grass every day. It not easy to admit you're getting older sometimes and I think that card collecting has helped fill a void I didn't know I had.

Awesome video, Graig! I'm really excited to see your interview with Dr. Beckett! What an amazing opportunity for you and Darren! Congrats once again on your 2 year youtubiversary! The simple answer on this week's question is easy. I love them. I've been collecting most of my life, and even though I've had some breaks here and there, I always come back to collecting. I love sports and history. Sports cards are the connection between the two for me. They have almost always been a part of my life and are really the biggest thing that I do for me and to spend time with friends. Family and career are hugely important to me. Sports cards give me the opportunity to take a little time to myself now and then, but it's also important for time with friends as well. Thanks as always.

The main reason I collect sports cards is simple. I am a huge sports fan just like my three brothers, and have a fondness in collecting my sports heroes who I watched growing up in the 1960s until today. Having these cards brings back so many fond memories of my childhood and adulthood. I also love sharing those times with my now 25 year old son as he grew up. It is priceless. Happy Moments remembered and passed down to the next generation.

Main reason I collect cards is the love all sports. My favorite part of collecting is the friendships made and the talking of cards with them. Really enjoy the RU-vid community to see what they all do. Thanks so much for all you do!!

Dealers liked to misinterpret the up arrows ▲ in Beckett, saying a card was $50 and "going up." I argued that it only meant the card "went up" from the previous issue, NOT that Beckett was predicting future upward movement.

The reason I collect is the nostalgia growing up my first 12 years in Germany and Baseball being Americas pastime to me ! Learning to play with my friends to play by American GIs is a great memory!

When I was a kid in the 80s and 90s, collecting was first about educating myself on the teams and players and then became about the chase and being a completist - having that one card everyone wanted or making master sets, etc. But today, I'm working to thoughtfully curate my collection. If you were to sit with me and my cards (or even without me), you should see a through line from pre-war to today telling a story about the kinds of players/people I value as well as being walked through the history of card design and printing. I truly think of each card as an art print and a relic.

Great question, Graig. I'm 35 years old. And have been collecting for about 30 of them. It all started with, my Dad passing down the cards he still had in his collection, and then teaching me about the players that he had grew up with, too. Basically as soon I was reading, I was buying cards. My Dad also bought for me and my brother the Kmart and turn back the clock, which have the players from, the Golden Era, a good way to learn about the history of the game, and also not paying much, for the lesson. Besides the history, there's the nostalgia. I think Mr. Petty hit the nail on the head with his response. For fellow collectors, which is probably many of us who collected as kids or teenagers, and as we grow older perhaps we yearn for those times. No matter how you spend time, it's all we have. And once that it's gone it, doesn't come back. Those memories we had and shared with family, or friends, the people you grew up with like, the childhood bond in Stand By Me. Ironically, that movie is pretty much a flash back told or written by the main character as an Adult. Also, like The Wonder Years. Kevin Arnold, and his adult self doing the narration throughout the show. We can collect at 8 years old or even near 80 years old, but you won't forget the joys you, once had. When you were young. You can only try. However, I do still collect as an adult, and if I have a son or daughter, I would see if they are also interested one day, in collecting. Or Watching sports together. Which my Dad also did with me.

Graig- This is a fantastic get for you. Happy Anniversary. So I would like Dr Beckett to discuss under appreciated/ overlooked players that in his mind are undervalued compared to their counterparts in the hobby. Thank you

Hi Graig. Congratulations on an amazing 2 years. I am looking forward to the videos and the Dr. Beckett interview this week. Why do I collect cards. I could write a 1,000 word essay on this, but that would be boring. The simple answer is the joy it brings me, along with the great friends I have made, hopefully for life. Thanks to ALL that you do for our community Graig, you`re one of the best and hardest working people in our cardmunity. Talk soon my good friend.

I collect to remember the sports icons that I watched and admired do their sports. They competed at a level few will ever attain. I felt blessed to have the opportunity to watch them play and I collect to remember the impact they had on my perception of life. To watch Barry Sanders glide across the field and change direction at will to elude defenders. To witness Micheal Jordan elevate to levels above his competition and dunk on them. To be amazed as Caitlin Clark finds an open teammate that didn’t look open for an easy bucket. To be in awe as Terry Bradshaw throws a deep ball that Lynn Swam catches, then loses and levitates to re-catch as falls to ground. These and many other moments are meant to be remembered. For you it might have been Montana to Clark to beat the Cowboys. The cards, and particularly the action shots let these moments stay with us forever. This is why I collect. This is why I keep looking for that card that captured a moment I want to remember and I don’t current have in my collection. This is also why I struggle as I consider very old vintage cards. I know who Mickey Mantle is and that he was great, but I never saw him play. My baseball guy was George Brett. My brother and I lost it when he was called out because of the pine tar. I saw almost all of the people I collect play in person at least once. These are important moments that shaped my life. Thank you for your videos!!!!

The main reason I collect sports cards is relive my childhood. I collect cards of players that I grew up with watching the games on television, listening to games on the radio or watching them at a game in person.

Great question: answer-it’s fun, gives us something to work toward (goal cards, sets, runs, etc) and something to look forward to (shows, purchases) and sports are cool!

Hi Graig, I am looking forward to seeing the interview with Dr. Beckett. I used to subscribe and read Beckett Monthly, Baseball Hobby News and Baseball Cards Magazine. In the late 70's/early 80's Dr. Beckett put out a price guide called "Sport Americana Baseball Price Guide.

Great video. Lots of Great questions for Jim. Since you only have so much time with him, I sat that one out to let Midlife Nation get some questions in. As far as the next question, I have thought a great deal on this question over the years. I think it boils down to getting out of the now, and making me feel like a kid again. Reliving great memories, and dreaming of the greatest game of all time, baseball, a kids game played by men. Dreaming of days gone by, and all the heroes and would-be heroes that have graced the National Pastime for 150 years. The cardboard is a way for all of us to connect with the past, and those memories that we all hold dear. Nothing else does that quite the same way.

Hey Graig, looking forward to the Dr. Beckett conversation. As for your question for next week, it is hard to choose since my reasons are all equal in importance to me. What got me initially collecting as a kid and now are similar but different. As a kid I started because I saw the players as Superheros. As an adult it's nostalgia of seeing them as that way and to pass that feeling to my daughter and grandson with the wondering why did I collect these players.

For next weeks question. I must of picked up the collecting gene from somewhere. My father wasnt a baseball fan. He loved football. I collect because i love the history of the sport. Seeing images of the players who played before i was born is a lot of fun. I cant quote stats like die hard baseball guys. Getting cards of Bart Starr and Johnny Unitas does it for me. Love em

Graig, Another great video. Two things- 1- if it’s not too late to ask Dr Beckett, Who or how did they come up with the set catalog numbers ? ie Goodwin Champions n162, or T206 in baseball. As for todays question- it takes me back to childhood and adolescence , with the wisdom of an adult. These were the happiest carefree times of my life. My parents were always home, or Dad was at work and dinner was at 5 when he got home. It’s all about the memories of a magical place and time. I look at the people in this hobby like someone in the neighborhood we could play ball with no matter what time of yr. And when you meet someone new it’s like a new kid just rolled up on his schwin with his glove looking to fit in with the neighborhood kids and just wanted to play. In the end, it’s always about the people, whether it’s your friends , or the people on the card. We are all just people.

I know your opinion on jersey and bat cards , but I like them , I do think they should be limited , and I think those kind of card's like multi - Jersey and Bat card's seem like they look better in Beckett holders .. ( I only have a few , our of possibly a million card's ? ) While I was watching this also looked at the February 1995 Beckett with Ruth on the cover ? I really think the main reason I liked Baseball And Baseball cards early was .. Mr. CUB ( BANKS )

PSA grading is #1 for one reason. THE REGISTRY!!! It gave collectors a mechanism for having bragging rights for their collection. We humans can be very shallow at times and the registry gives collectors a way to show off..

I would love to ask Dr Beckett on how he views the numerical grade in every slab now and did it create a monster in this hobby? Also, if he could go back in time, would he have wanted grading to be just about authenticating the card (without a grade) so the price of the card would be up to the seller/buyer and not the comped value for a PSA 3, or PSA 7, or PSA 10?
