I feel that ultimately the problem is a lack of balance. I think its possible to overindulge in reading, for example, because it can turn into an escapism in the same way that social media can for a lot of people. Something I wanted to ask: As much as I see the value in treating attention like currency, do you think it can lead to a harmful obsession with our productivity? In saying this I do agree that there is a fundamental problem with spending your life watching someone else live theirs versus living your own life.
@victorialim
@victorialim 5 лет назад
What an insightful question. I would respond by saying productivity is more than simply getting *work* done per se, but deliberately putting aside time for things that are meaningful to you, even if that just means daydreaming, exercising or having fun with friends! I think being obsessed with productivity in the conventional sense can def be harmful, which is why I try to think of productivity in this way & also try to re-define it in the videos I do myself about it on my channel :)

Something that helped me a lot was putting social media apps in the second page of a random folder. This makes it so I only go on the apps when I consciously want to go on them. It takes away those times when you open your phone and out of habit click on the app and then all of the sudden 15 minutes have passed.

Casey used to be my favourite RU-vidr. I started following him when he had 600k subscribers. I was really addicted to his content. After he became a celebrity, the content of the videos, IMHO, became poor, like he was doing it just as pure entertainment rather than discussing his challenges, his projects etc. I hope you don't follow the same path. Your content is great. Keep up the good work.

Hi John. It was last year i think. I found a study linking the use of instagram to increase narcissism. And another that show narcissism can cause major depression. So it makes sense you quit social media, preferably instagram. Today some psychiatrists are treating social media addiction with the drugs used in alcohol addiction and is the gold standard.

You’ve got a really interesting point on the “intentional attention.” It really forces you to rethink what you do to fill your time with what might be a short-term satisfaction or joy instead of investing time into activities with more long-term benefits. I love watching your videos especially ones like this that really get you to think!
@joemorris5540
@joemorris5540 5 лет назад
Look up "attention residue" or the idea that when you switch from one task to another (e.g. studying to checking social media) and then switch back to the original task, your ability to focus will be reduced. Or in other words, switching tasks has left a "residue" on your "attention"

Great video John. I actually watched a previous on your addiction to social media. It really resonated with me as I used social media so much. even before that video, i was doubling down my usage. I also saw Luke's video on fomo and how it is a "con" to social media use. Now the only pieces of media I use are snap, vsco and youtube. I must say, it does force myself to focus on other important matters rather than what others are doing. Keep them coming john!

I’ve been thinking a lot about the long-term effects of excessive phone/social media usage. To me, it’s scares the sh- out of me that *no one knows the long term effects of phone use.* I mean the device I’m using to type this comment could be slowly destroying my brain function and I don’t even realize it... on the weekends I do “no phone mornings” and the difference is crazy! I spend the time journaling, exercising, writing about ideas that I have. I promise you’ll never feel more mentally clear in your life.

you're so right man! Great I found you by searching for the social media videos of casey neistat again :) We all should always keep in mind who casey is and who we are when we start the tour... everybody who starts new, should in fact spend more time on social media to get the concept, to find the right people. The more and more you will find your way, you will reduce this because you have something to do, and more, and more, till you might end up like casey who doesn't really need any social media because it just goes crazy having so many followers.... I had the same problem starting in 2016. I was wondering if I was able to make my notification in Facebook go up so high, that I might not be able to write to everybody anymore. In spring 2019 I finally achieved my goal. Since then things go crazy, and I definitelly spend my currency.... ähm, attention, more and more to the things that keep me productiv, and I realize how hard it gets for me, because all the ideas people spread on social media are often just noise of many people who maybe won't but out anything. So you have to find a way to filter people who just talk and find the creators! :)

I agree with most of what you say, but I want to defend TV because I think it gets a bad rep (especially on youtube, which I find pretty ironic). How can you say that "If you sit and watch TV for an hour vs running for an hour, you're gonna feel a whole lot better after running". That may be true for you, but how can you say that like it's a fact, for anyone at any moment ? Watching TV can have tremendous value. Pretty much as much value as reading a book, I would argue. A good movie or TV show (fiction or documentary) can make you relate to people that are very different than you and thus make you a more open minded person. It can make you laugh, cry, as well as think about society issues, or interest you in subject that you might have found boring or unreachable before. And if you're an artist yourself (of any kind), that can inspire you to create better things. Utimately everyone has got to find what makes them feel good, and it can be anything. And I agree somewhat agree with the message that you have to reflect on how you spent your time, but on the other hand, don't be too worried about finding meaning or deep value into your every moment. Because you'll then start questioning everything and stop living in the moment, and I can think of no better way to waste your time than that. I've been there (and still am, sometimes).

John, I just want to make a point here respectfully. I admire your work on your channel, and I've enjoyed watching a number of your videos. I think it's great you've become passionate about the impacts of social media, particularly on adolescents in the United States. But, I also just want to emphasize that--and I'm not talking about Casey Neistat here haha--there are a number of academics and professionals out there who have done a significant amount of research and have provided us with a lot of information on the effects of social media. I just caution you to try and not appear as though you are an authority on the subject.
