How can factors like inflation, supply and demand, and interest rates trigger recessions? Learn the economic basics of modern markets.
--
For millennia, the people of Britain had been using bronze to make tools and jewelry, and as a currency for trade. But around 800 BCE, that began to change: the value of bronze declined, causing social upheaval and an economic crisis- what we would call a recession today. So what causes recessions? Richard Coffin digs into the economic fluctuations that affect our modern markets.

This global recession/collapse might end up being a part of us for a very long time. With inflation currently at about 9%, my primary concern is how to maximize my savings/retirement fund of about $680k which has been sitting duck since forever with zero to no gains.

I agree, having a portfoIio-advisor for investing is genius! Not long ago amidst the pandemic crash in March 2020, I was really having investing nightmare prior touching base with a license portfolio-advisor. In a nutshell, i've accrued over $620k with the help of my advisor from an initial $120k investment thus far.

The most important thing that should be on everyone mind currently should be to invest in different sources of income that doesn't depend on the government. Especially with the current economic crisis around the word. This is still a good time to invest in various stocks, Gold, silver and digital currencies

The key to big returns is not big moving stocks. It's managing risk in relationship to reward. Having the correct size on and turning your edge as many times as necessary to reach your goal. That holds true from long term investing to day trading.

It is advisable to seek guidance from a professional or trusted advisor in order to navigate this recession and achieve potential high yields.

Some of the most respected analysts in the fields of markets, business, and economics have been expressing their opinions on how severe they believe the next downturn would be, as well as how far stocks may have to go, as concerns about a recession grow on Wall Street and inflation stays well above the Fed's 2% target. My objective is to have a portfolio worth at least $850,000 by the time I'm 60 years old, so I need suggestions and guidance on what investments to make to position myself for retirement.

Global financial markets have been significantly impacted by SVB's demise, prompting investors to sell off bank equities hastily and reevaluate their interest rate expectations. I want guidance on the best approaches to maximizing my returns in this negative market.
@hersdera
@hersdera 11 месяцев назад
It is unlikely that the market will experience big gains anytime soon in light of the latest developments involving SVB, therefore it is prudent to set reasonable expectations and get ready for a potentially protracted recovery period. It is advised to postpone making big investment decisions until the economic climate in areas of concern has stabilized. It is best to take precautions and stay out of the current disturbance...

Recession is most likely the result of an external factor. For the first time in decades, the United States is losing its clout as a federal reserve currency. They don't have any more economies to use to control inflation, and less money is being spent on stock and oil trading than in the past. They all lend support to the idea that a new multilateral world order is in the works.

Some economists have projected that both the U.S. and parts of Europe could slip into a recession for a portion of 2023. A global recession, defined as a contraction in annual global per capita income, is more rare because China and emerging markets often grow faster than more developed economies. @azuremain9194
@azuremain9194 2 года назад
Ok let me summarise (this is mainly for my benefit so I can better understand this, correct me if I'm wrong) So a recession is a fall in production and economic growth. There're two ideas here, inflation and interest rates. Inflation is basically the same item being worth more. That same item has not changed at all, rather it is the money that is changing, i.e. decreasing in value. Instead of 1 dollar being worth a bagel, 1 dollar is now only worth half a bagel. (This might increase economic activity since by increasing your prices, provided that you still have enough demand, the company can grow larger) Interest rates is a percent of the loan paid by debtors to the creditors. If it is low, it is good seeing as companies can borrow money to expand without need to worry about bankruptcy. High interest rates will mean less people borrowing money, thus less expansion of the economy (i.e. economic activity declines). Other than being caused by shock factors (e.g. war), there might be a recession due to people borrowing lots of money and expecting to pay it back but their assumptions are not met and economic growth is slower than thought, thus they make a loss, not a profit. On the other end, people may be reluctant to invest, resulting in producers slowing down production, having to cut jobs and wages to make a profit. With the printing of money, the bank can attempt to lower interest rates (but increase inflation) to stimulate spending and economic growth. But (as the video stated) people become reliant on "cheap debt" and thus inflation becomes excessive.

I am no economist. I thought the economy could be explained by boiling a large pot of Irish stew. Imagine that you need to buy firewood to keep the pot going. Obviously the more firewood you feed the fire, the hotter and faster the pot will boil. But you need to pay for the firewood. Cheap money enabled by low interest rate means you could buy more of it to make the pot go harder. But as the demands for firewood grows, or its supply is diminishing, price will rise accordingly. That I believe is "inflation". As inflation becomes more severe, meaning that it will now cost more for the firewood. So you cut back on its use to save cost. As you reduce the amount of firewood to keep the pot boiling, the pot will boil less vigorously. That is the equivalent of a "recession". But there are other negatives that come with the cutting back on firewood use. The wood cutters will earn less, and the people whose income is tied to the wood cutters will fall as well. Now as I said that I am no economist, but this topic fascinates me, and I thought a simpler explanation is warranted. Take it as a joke if you like.

Inflation is when there is an increase in the supply of money chasing the same amount of goods, the increase in prices is a symptom of that and not the cause.
@RianWardana

Does that apply only to demand-pull inflation or it is also applicable to cost-push inflation?
@davidespanti

It's literally the opposite. The definition of inflation is the general rise of prices. The decrease of purchasing power is a direct consequence of that and they can be viewed together, but when an economist talks about inflation they are referring to the increase of price levels.

so is it impossible to have a recession if demand is so high? Demand for everything is still high post covid.
@mariowiiluigi1919
@mariowiiluigi1919 2 года назад
It could be possible to recover from recession even though we have a lot of demand by also raising the supply of everything. The problem that we have right now is that theres a lot of issues to fulfill said supply, from the limitation of said supply because issues of the supply chain, issues by the routes (the suez canal incident). It can also recover by lowering demand, but by the overdose of stimulus and the social desire to enjoy life after covid leaves a situation where there's a lot of money ready to be spent but enough good or services to exchange to that money

Lower taxation is the solution to resesions. People would have more money to buy, invest and save, and companies would have more money to increase productivity and match the increase in demand, and therefore avoiding desocupation and a contraction in the supply. Increasing goberment spending only would cause an increase in the need of debt, monetary expansion (that as Milton Friedman said, in the long run, only causes increases in inflations rates, ask Argentina for that) and more taxations that only reduce the capabilities of the market in regard to supply and demand leading to a resetion. Interventions on interest rates by the goberment would create an artificial situacion on the market. Lower interest rates than the fixed by the market means an increase in the amount of people that takes debt, and that also means that the amount of people that can't pay for it will inevitably increase, and a crisis with similarities to the one in 2008 can happen.

recession can be happen because of the following: - borrwing more and more money when a business is growing to satisfy demand but unpredicted events happen causing the business to be in huge debt. - natural disasters to an oil reserve -> high prices -> less buying -> lower demnad -> less wages -> lower demand .. etc - government print money + cheap debt -> to increase spending -> causes inflation
