A good electric brush, water pick and flossing after EVERY SINGLE MEAL & SNACK is the absolute best way to keep it all at bay. It doesn't have to be an electric brush... but PROPER brushes is a must! Edit... and a regular every 6 month dental checkup is just as vital !
Good video. I just had my teeth scaled for the first time ever in 18+ years (I think?). I did not expect it would be painful. I\m going to do it more regularly from now on.
So after eating a something surgery or drinking a something like a soda you can feel that sort of nasty "skin" grow on your teeth. It kinda amazes me how fast it happens. Is this because the bacteria make plaque faster when fueled with sugar rather then say protein or veggies?
I know the sensation that you are describing, but I don't know if it's due to bacteria growth or if it's due to a change in mouth chemistry which causes the effect. My guess is that it's due to a change in your mouth pH (soda is very acidic) which may be causing that mouth feel. Thanks for the great question! I will need to investigate it further. Thank you very much for watching!
Just got mine scraped clean 😬 man my gum lines sting so much. What I wana know is this...🎉Is using a softer allowing my tooth plaque & tartar to linger over a more firm brush? I brush pretty well and fluoride.
I did not go to the dentist for a cleaning in 20 years. Got gum disease and bone loss from it. Don't be like me. Floss once a day and brush with fluoride toothpaste. And get a cleaning from a dentist once per year or you will be like me. I don't have proof but im pretty sure my gum disease was also causing other health problems like elevated liver enzymes.
I always get scolded by my dentist by this. I don’t have bad plaque however, the plaque has caused my gums to expand so I think that’s the difficult issue. However, I think I just need to floss more 😅
Hi, it's an everlasting battle, you will always have plaque buildup. You will always need to brush and floss everyday and see your dentist regularly. This is the way.....
I have done composite filling n my teeths..becz mostly teeths of mine are milk teeths. But after that treatment plaque is produced on my specific teeths. What should i do plzzzzzzzz guide me i'm too much worried about it
My kids have severe gut dysbiosis and are on the spectrum. A few years ago their doctor put them on chelators and their teeth became terrible. Now a few years later they eat a strict carnivore diet to heal the dysbiosis but their teeth (and even their new teeth coming in) are covered in tartar.. We just left the dentist and she said something else could be causing the extreme calcium build up but she couldn't think of what it was.. Any idea?
Hi, anecdotally, I've had a few patients change their diets (they all did the South Beach diet more or less) and they ended up getting more tartar buildup. The only thing I can think of that happened is they ate more foods that the bacteria in their mouths also liked to eat.
Thank you very much for the video! ,Do you think the structure of the teeth, especially the lower ones, affects the accumulation of plaque? Also, do you recommend an electric brush?
You're welcome! For lower front teeth, I've noticed more plaque accumulation on patients whose teeth aren't straight. Most people do a better job brushing with an electric toothbrush. I don't have a favorite brush that I can recommend. Give a few a try.
Hello doc I just scaled my teeth tht I had on my lower front tooth but tentatively it's formed again after about 3 months what could be the case of this??
Hi, you may be someone who builds plaque and tartar quickly. I have many patients that need cleanings every 3 months. I even had a couple who needed cleanings every 2 months.
Thank you doctor ! Recently I am having really bad breath, is it due to dental plaque ? Or some serious health problem :( . brushing flossing and mouthwash is not working for me :(
In addition to plaque buildup and periodontal disease causing bad breath, you can also get bad breath from the foods you eat, not eating properly, and different illnesses. Get checked by your dentist to rule out any mouth issues first. Then talk to your physician. Thank you very much for watching.

everybody says its due to bad hygiene and its not true for some people like me. Two weeks ago i had a dental cleaning and i brushed perfectly and still i am coated in rough shiny material on my teeth unable to brush it off
The amount of plaque that gets produced will vary from person to person. I have a patient who comes in every 2 months for cleanings because of the amount of tartar that he produces. Thank you for watching.
I don't know if there is a direct link between porridge and plaque buildup. Plaque buildup is due to bacteria, and the bacteria eat the same foods that you eat. Some people are more prone to plaque buildup than others. Thank you very much for watching.
Oh, I have this and I've been brushing my teeth and it's going fast if you move like a Spit and don't notice, in 24 hours such plauqe will appear on ya teeth!!!??
Yes it does. Not eating harder foods can contribute to tartar buildup. I have patient's who changed their diet to include more fruits and vegetables and they ended up getting more buildup, but that doesn't happen to everyone.
The pellicle layer gets removed during the polishing part of the cleaning. It will reform in an hour or so afterwards. Thank you very much for watching!
Due to the pandemic I haven't visited my dentist for a year and a half, I regularly brush my teeth 2-3x a day but I noticed some tartar buildup at the back of my teeth.. Im just curious because ill finally be having an appointment with my dentist, im curious will it hurt that much to remove it? or will it damage my teeth because im afraid my teeth will never be the same again. 🥲
It usually doesn't hurt to have tartar removed. If you are concerned, talk to your dentist or dental hygienist, they can use some topical anesthetic or even some local anesthetic if you are worried about feeling pain. Thank you very much for watching.
