Where to start...? I recently moved next to the Mediterranean sea, and as a Brittanny based diver this is not a spot where diving is often taken seriously. The most reckless people I've seen were often scuba instructors, saying stuff like "dive light, you don't need more than a 10 liter tank even for a 60 meter dive!". I always get remarks on how I bring too much air (sidemounting), but I never hear someone get hassled when they bring a 10L to a 50m dive. This seems normal here, and thankfully there are not that much accidents. But this is, in my opinion, a crappy way of planning a dive.

that is so stupid, i have the exact oposite philosophy when it comes to speshaly my solo dives, i can plan a 70 minute dive down to 30-35 metres wich could possibly be done on a 12--15l depends on how long i stay at what depth. But i will easily brig D12's and a 11L stage just incase something happens. (instead of 2400-3000L i have now around 7000L) Also if im the mood of having 20 min deco after the dive and longer bottom time i have now enaugh air to do so instead of beeing stressed out thinking do i have enaugh air.. If i dont use all my air il just use the same botles for an easier dive next time. even when i dive light with a 10, 12 or 15L single tank il bring 7 or 11L stage for backup air source and for safety.. her in Norway is nothing called "light" when it comes to equipment weight.

Bigger Balls than brains! Love it, I may have to borrow that quote. Great video as always, to the point and tell it like it is.

Great video. Here is a quote from the GUE fundamentals of better diving book “ In short, people generally create their own problems by not properly managing or identifying the true risks of the dive.”

The problem, many times, is that nowadays certifying divers it's strictly business. I just finished my OWD and to be fair, I just now realise I don't know anything, I just have an understanding of how unprepared I am and I really feel I should be more knowledge than I am to be able to go diving safely. But I do have a card that states that I have acquired the necessary knowledge. Well, I don't. Love your videos, be safe everyone.

It’s kind of sad actually how untrained ppl are when they are set out on their own. One girl in one of my classes couldn’t clear her mask would panic every time. She got her card.
@petrsedlak4761
@petrsedlak4761 3 года назад
@@frankdieber7090 Well, this is simple. She is afraid of water, so you would hardly convince her to go for a demanding dive. Either someone would teach her, and one day she would be ok, or she stays afraid of water and nothing serious would happen, because she would not dive much. What is sad is that this is how someone spoiled diving for her right from the beginning.
@frankdieber7090
@frankdieber7090 3 года назад
@@petrsedlak4761 I don’t agree with that response at all. When I teach someone something I put all feelings aside and if you can’t complete simple tasks I don’t send you out as a certified person in anything. That’s the point of my comment she never should have been certified. And the girl I speak of supposedly was half a fish she had all kinds of stories about going to college in south Fl. and all these trips out to the Bahamas and snorkel trips off short of fl. She knew her way around in the water. But she had a panic problem and flooding her mask set it off every time. That’s someone that more time should have been taken or not certified friggen period. That’s the perfect example of when something goes wrong, this girl thinks she’s good .She Might even make it a few years with no troubles then she’ll push her limits and we’ll be talking about how did this poor girl with all these dives under her belt die?
@petrsedlak4761
@petrsedlak4761 3 года назад
@@frankdieber7090 But she is certified and you can't do anything about it. You can tell her, that she has a problem. If she does not listen, it is not your resposibility. I agree, that there are bad schools. But you can't do anything about it either. You can do your part as best as possible. Training excellent divers. Educate people around you. But what else would you like to do? It's like fighting wind mills.

Unfortunately the quality and the professionalism of the press is getting worse from day to day. They almost don’t investigate at all and the only goal is to give to the readers a sensation, no matter if true or not. I can explode every time when there is a dive accident in Attersee lake here in Austria, when I read what they write. Fortunately it is not the case only with the dive accidents, my opinion is that the majority of the press reports in nowadays are like this. I can only hope that some day we will have a real free and professional press again, instead this cheap stuff you can read at the moment.

There are dangerous dive sites even for the well-trained & well-equipped, I would argue mainly due to changeable sea conditions. 50+m, 10litre, Feb...that's just silly. But the business model of newspapers in the last 20 years means "Deadly Dive Site" will sell more than "diver makes poor choices".

I have similar experience, my diving buddy at that time didnt want to do pre-dive check but I stopped him, he didnt opened his bottle and was ready to jump from platform, if he did he would have jumped stright into 35m and god knows if he woud have known what to do in that panic. As you say, there is lack of precaution and that may be fatal.

What I call dangerous dive sites ? Places with 1.unknown or 2.variable conditions. The rest of places are predictable so any problem comes with our health conditions or stupidity ( this includes "mucho" stuff, lack of training or preparation for dive, even tec mulfunction ). We really miss one training in every agency - psychology of diving. I'm greenhorn in diving but already I can say that I'm more safe diving solo then with anyone.

Diving is inherently risky; you are after all entering an unnatural and unfriendly environment for the human animal. But we ameliorate the risk through the right equipment, training and acknowledging that people are prone to make mistakes. If a mistake is possible we can take measues to address it: keep things simple, develop habits/techniques/procedures that avoid it, use standardised checks, always keep gear in the same pocket. You could make a long list, taking in all the accumulated knowledge and experience of those who have had issues and found ways round them. But on this channel it's likely most viewers will have a professional approach anyway, unlike the protagonists in the story. The problem that's the subject here though is that if an accident isn't analysed correctly the wrong lessons will be drawn, nobody will learn and the sport may as you say be harmed. Reporters often have no knowledge but make up for it with a surfeit of drama and opinion. That does no one any good and you were right to call them out.

You’re 100% correct. It’s always people that have ZERO diving experience that spout off all the BS.

should more people start using 15l or 100cu tanks for safety reasons. i was recently on dives with 100cu tanks and constantly came to a 15ft safety stop with 1000-900 lbs when people with 12l or 80cu had 700-500 lbs.

Depends on the divers SAC rate, a small, athletic and experienced lady for example would usually have a good SAC rate compared to a large overweight guy with limited experience. Take the gas you need for the dive, use rule of thirds, turn the dive on whoever reaches 2/3 first, thumb it on 1/3. It’s not good practise to start a safety stop on 500psi. Stop should end on 700 / 50 bar, minimum.

Small tanks, alcohol consumption, 50+ meters, DCS..... obviously a lack of common sense.
