What causes a nosebleed? Well, epistaxis can be attributed to many different causes. In this video, Dr Ariel Waitzman, head of Otolaryngology at Dearborn ENT will go over some of the reasons why a nosebleed might occur in children, in the elderly and everyone in between.
Epistaxis is an extremely common condition that affects all ages. Some nosebleeds are caused by trauma to the nose, other bloody noses can be caused by blood vessels that are very fragile. The nosebleeds can be fairly heavy because of the proximity of the blood vessels to the surface.
In the elderly, epistaxis is largely caused by a change in the blood vessels from age change. The blood vessels may stiffen and if they crack and the bleeding can occur more easily. Also medications can increase the risk of bleeding. Any aspirin or allergy medicines may cause a nosebleed.
You can treat epistaxis at home by using different types of moisturizers. A good moisturizer that can help prevent nose bleeds is a saline nasal spray or a nasal gel. Also using vaseline in the nose can keep the nose from getting dry and bleeding.
If you believe that having a dry nose is causing your nosebleeds, it might be a good idea to have a dehumidifier in your room especially in the winter months.
In this video we talked about common causes of nosebleeds, and in a future video we will go over the treatment of epistaxis. So stay tuned!
