Tyler speculates as to why Jerry Tillery, despite no significant changes in production or film (mostly), has gone from a prized and protected player to someone who has to work for a starting role.

Does Jerry Tillery win the starting job over Morgan Fox?
@OJoseBayBay
@OJoseBayBay 2 года назад
It's debatable. Morgan is more of a developed player, but Jerry is I think 4 years younger, so he will last alot longer than Morgan Fox. Personally, Morgan Fox should start as default, but in garbage time, Jerry could come in.

No, Tillery has yet to show he deserved to be starting period… if you give him, Fehoko and Gaziano the same amount of reps I expect him to be 3rd in win %…. If we are going to take the next step as a franchise we have to demand better… if it was a true competition I he wouldn’t make the 53

If the Chargers want run stopping, Fox is over Tillery. If they want pass rushing, Fox is over Tillery. If they want to sell tickets, Fox is over Tillery. If Staley takes a fat rip of a bong, Tillery starts.

2021- Staley was a new coach many saw as the savior of this defense. 2022- Tillery had a chance under Staley, and blew it.

I think what happened is that last year telesco wanted his former first round pick to look good and wants staley to do his best to maximize his opportunities. To try and boost tillery's confidence, staley gave him the preseason off. After the season and once again showing bad play, staley buckled down and said to telesco "hey I cant have this guy starting games for us if we want to win."

I think Tillery and Linval Joseph (after Covid) stunted the growth of our D-Line last season.. If we’re being honest Tillery should be on the roster bubble… I think Fehoko, CC, Gaziano and Tillery should be competing for the last 2 spots assuming we keep 6 D- Linemen….⚡️💙⚡️

Think you were spot on. My suspicion is that management has been interfering with the coaching job ever since Marty Schottenheimer got fired after going 14 and 2 with the 06 Chargers. I truly believe we should have had multiple super bowls by now just looking at the rosters we've had over the last 14 years or so. I'm a die-hard fan but they have been a lesson in what happens when someone's big head gets in the way of allowing talent to do what it needs to do to win.

I think maybe it was a attitude and effort problem after the season and then when his 5th year option was declined. Michael Davis after having a wobbly year was in the building pre combine working out, Tillery didn't seem to around at all trying to get better. Think there is very good chance he will not be the starter. Glad you had a great time holiday, and that you're back pumping out great content!

It’s not a coincidence that in most facility workout videos you hardly see tillery there. This is why TT’s scouting report on a player’s work ethic weighed heavily after Tillery.

Also Jerry played only 3 years at D line before going into the NFL. He played offense all the way until he played for Notre Dame. He also played his entire last year with a shoulder injury before having surgery his rookie year in the NFL. One thing I notice about Jerry is he gets better year by year. This is his year to show the world and he will.

I think truthfully that there was a serious conversation between staley and telesco. I think telesco wanted staley to make it work, so staley gave tillery all of the tools necessary to succeed, and we saw what tillery did with that opportunity. I think telesco is now on the same page as staley in that jerry tillery was just a miss by telesco, and now telesco can't point fingers at staley or anyone else on the coaching staff for tillery never proving himself to be a legitimate NFL football player.

I think they need to trade Tillery for a 6th round pick. He has actual slight upside as a pass rusher in a 4-3 defense. I’d trade him to the Cowboys, Falcons, Seahawks, or the Colts where they play that type of scheme so he has a chance to flourish. He won’t flourish in Staleys system.
@donners66
@donners66 2 года назад
I think you got a large part of the answer. My belief is that Staley saw the possibilities with Tillery (1st Rd pick, perhaps guided by Telesco and Griff Smith input)and gave him the opportunity to show what he had. Add to this availability and some poor personnel decisions (like you mentioned) we got the answer we now have. Tillery was given a golden opportunity but didn’t take it. Now he is rightfully classified as unproven and fighting for his career.

I’m thinking the Chargers organization was not out to win the Super Bowl last year and putting out the players that gave you the best chance to win was d not always fine. Jerry Tillery and other players we’re given last year to prove that they could improve and get better in Stanley’s first year. Some did and others did not. This year since the organization he’s looking to win a Super Bowl they went out and found this many players that could replace the ones that didn’t show the level of play that Staley in the charger organization was looking for.
@randallturner9094
@randallturner9094 2 года назад
I think you’re overthinking it a bit. Tillery was a first round pick. His rookie contract includes a $6.3mil bonus, or about $1.6mil/yr cap hit. And about another $4mil guaranteed, so ~$2.5mil/yr guaranteed. If we cut him last year, we’d take a $5.8mil dead-money cap hit. Couldn’t afford it. If we cut him this year, ie, NOW, we’d have $2.7mil dead money. We’d save a little less than $1mil. But it’s doable. (Fox, for instance, is costing us $1.2mil for one year.) The difference is last year we couldn’t afford to cut him. This year we can, but we’d rather get something for the ~$3.5mil we’re spending.. if only as a rotational contributor. Regardless, what Staley says is whatever he think’s in the team’s best interest for him to say. There’s a benefit to telling white lies. There’s also a cost, as you lose credibility especially internally. And the GM’s image is a factor; he’s your boss. But it’s really pretty simple, just a matter of being pot-committed and hoping the horse learns to sing.
@tylerschoon237
@tylerschoon237 2 года назад
I don't think he's a cap casualty though so I don't believe it was a $ thing/is a $ thing
@randallturner9094
@randallturner9094 2 года назад
@@tylerschoon237 His cap # now is $3.6mil, $2.7mil guaranteed. We’d only save about $1mil if we cut him, so no, the motivation to cut him for cap space isn’t there. BUT, we can now afford the $2.7mil dead money cap hit if we cut him, because it’s less than his current cap hit. LAST YEAR, we couldn’t. That’s what changed. His dead-money cap hit would have been $5.8mil. His total cap hit that year was only $3.1mil. It would have cost us an additional $2.7mil on 2021’s cap. (Because bonus amortization accelerates to current year if contract’s terminated early, some caveats.) Cut Tillery last year: costs $2.7mil cap Cut Tillery this year: saves $0.9mil cap Apologies if you already had this internalized, Tyler, just dotting i’s for my OCD. Side note: everything’s a factor. You’re apologizing for bringing up some others that’re totally valid, no need. We’re speculating on mindset, it’s speculative (heh).

First off- I LOVE this podcast BUT I do think this video/argument is a little naive. I don’t think it’s a structural or organizational problem to give high drafted players AT LEAST 3 years to prove themselves. Sometimes injuries and other factors impact our ability to properly determine the value of a player. Don’t be so quick to forget how the first 3 years of Melvin Ingrams career looked and to a lesser extent Keenan Allen (I know he had a great rookie year but the next 3 were all ended prematurely). Giving Tillery a chance to prove himself once and for all last year isnt “golden child” or some perverted nepotism imho. It’s standard operating procedure. Exactly why Kenneth Murray is gonna get another year to prove himself. We HAVE to see. Honestly I don’t understand what GAC or any other chargers fan would want handled differently with underperforming with first round picks ? Cut bait after 1-2 seasons? Trade? Again I’m not trying to be negative or critical. I love this podcast and I understand the notion behind this video. We want fairness. We want equality. We want open competition and the best players on the field. I just personally don’t think giving first round picks 3 years to prove themselves is bad front office tactics. Especially considering the draft capital invested into the players. I would hope they wouldn’t cut or release a player too soon. You could argue the chargers should’ve done a better job of having backup plans in case those didn’t pan out 💁🏻‍♂️
@tylerschoon237
@tylerschoon237 2 года назад
I'm fine with a player taking three years to prove themselves but you don't go about doing that by letting that unproven player take a preseason off when they're trying to make their way in the league. You're right that I likely would have done the same thing (easier for us fans to say bench a guy than being the guy to actually do it). I would, however, have continued to let him work with reduced snaps over time. Heck they converted Murray to EDGE for a bit because they knew other guys were playing better at linebacker.
