I am from Macau, right across Hong Kong that similar as a smaller copy. We are branded as the "good child" compare to Hong Kong because we did not resist(can not), and "gained" many benefits. Which blinded Macau citizens, and lead to all those party laws invaded Macau without much resistance.

Asians in Silicon Valley have also been demoted somewhat, forced to endorse open borders and "liberalism". Well laowhy86 compared Shanghai to New York, which is the only place that you listed where he compared it with a liberal state. He compared Guangdong with Florida, which is also a very conservative state. When you're talking about the states of Texas and Florida, the only places that are really liberal are the major cities, Austin, the capital of Texas, is like one of the most liberal cities in Texas. So is Dallas, San Antonio, and El Paso, near the border with Mexico.
@@laurent.9968 It is interesting to note that China's more liberal provinces tend to be on the border, but unlike the United States, even the most liberal parts of China can appear less liberal than the United States because China is a dictatorship. Sichuan is near Tibet and Yunnan, both of which, like Guangdong, are lovers of separatism. This province is more friendly to LGBT and women than other parts of China. But obviously, it's still a very bad place, only the rest of the country is worse.

I’m very proud of my culture. So imma just share a bit more uninvited haha. One of the main dialects in Fujian is Min Chinese (闽南语). Min Chinese is also the official language of Taiwan. Min Chinese is very close to the Old Chinese spoken back in dynasty days. Fujian’s geography formed such a good natural barrier from wars that the Min language is very well preserved. A lot of traditional Japanese pronunciations are also similar to Min Chinese.
I appreciate that you at least plugged Oklahoma's biodiversity. Most people think Oklahoma is just flat and barren. At 9,9 million square km², Canada share border with Alaska to the west and dozen state in straight central line. With population over 38 million, Canada is second most populous state after California. Its capital is Ottawa and largest city is Toronto.
These comparisons are great for helping learning geography and to have it stick in the brain and not just be forgotten again. It's attaches new facts to things in the network of associations in my mind that are already known and remembered.

He apparently knows so much about China but too little about his own country. Why? Based on his comments, he definitely knows next to nothing about other US states and only resorts to using stereotypes. I can provide these few examples as one who travels to many states: _ Louisiana has an interesting mix of culture (Creole, African, Spanish, French, Native American, etc.) and the state still has lots of French speakers and increasing number of French immersion schools. Being a rice-producing and crawfish-producing state, Louisiana cuisine is far from wild and weird. Tell me how these dishes are weird and wild: étoufée, gumbo, jambalaya, maque choux, etc. _ Chicago (which is the third most developed city of the United States) and Detroit DO have high crime rates but these states (Illinois and Michigan) also have strong agricultural background and they produce many types of crops feeding America. Michigan still has enclaves of Dutch and Finnish speakers. And what an ignorant thing to say that you’re so easily murdered here. And in terms of cleanliness and affordability, Chicago beats New York City by a long mile. _ Minnesota is not only the coldest place in the US but it has over 10,000 lakes and lots of woodlands. Montana has many zigzagging highways and enormously captivating mountains (Google “Yellowstone”) and hence, it is FAR from barren and freezing. _ I wouldn’t describe Maine’s weather as harsh (it looks like tropical paradise in comparison to Minnesota and Montana). Google “fall in Maine” and tell me how it is harsh. The state has seafood culture and imports high-quality lobsters. Fun fact: 5% of the population speak fluent French because it’s common for Québécois to cross border, vacation, and even migrate there. And thus, it’s also common for people who live across the US-Canada border to have dual citizenship.

Also its close to NY which has a great skyline and structures but a ton of garbage pollution and the biggest rats I've ever seen, walking down sidewalks broad day like stray cats. Parts of CA literally have clouds of pollution hanging around and LA is probably the grossest place in North America, but that dirty jersey joke is still a runnin.

This might be the most educational thing I've watched in months. It's also highly entertaining. Just like the US, it's easy to look at news about the fucked up stuff the government does and forget that what will outlast these things is the land and people. I weep for the gov't goons who chased you out of China for making this type of content, I don't see you promoting anything more than cultural understanding and tourism. I can see why, though, they're very sensitive to comments like, "Beijing is a dirty ass city." I have no doubt that it is, but for the CCP it's all about pride and hurt feelings over reality. This video really makes me want to learn more about China and I'd love to visit there, but we are in the midst of a pandemic and on a crash course for WW3, so I may not live to see a time when that's feasible.

I drive through Arkansas once and really liked it. There’s sections of hilled areas and then there’s farmland. Alabama is another that gets a bad name that’s really a pretty place.

Matt, you look like you really enjoyed producing this video. Makes for a nice and lighthearted break away from the sadly serious state of the world videos that grow like mushrooms during the rainy season. A quick edit: your comparisons were quite a bit closer than I'd imagined them to be before I watched the entire video. Sadly, it made me want to travel there and spend a few years looking around. Watching your documentaries was informative and great fun, but your warnings to foreigners who would travel outside the cities, give one a necessary pause.
I'm originally from Wisconsin and they do more then just make Cheese. They also produce all your Miller brand beverages. It's also home to Summerfest the world largest annual music festival in Milwaukee, WI. Wisconsin is also home to the best NFL Franchise in the history of the Sport. The Green Bay Packers have won more championships than any other franchise and is the only Franchise that is owned by the public. The rest of the world looks at Green Bay every year to see how they did financially since they are the only team that opens all there books to the public. One last interesting fact about Wisconsin is the state has over 10,000 lakes within it's borders. The only state that has more lakes is Minnesota. So if your an avid fisherman not many better places to live then WI for freshwater fish.

Hands down one of the most amazing videos I watched this year! Having traveled and lived in many states and provinces in both US and China for many years, I love most of your geographic comparisons. Cultural wise though, I feel the southerners in the U.S. are probably more comparable to people from northern China: warmth, hospitality, directness, but relatively more conservative.
Wait, Taiwan is DEFINITELY China's Canada. :p Chinese people think it's part of China. Americans think Canada is part of the US. They speak the same language, but people are more polite and much more environmentally conscious. Taiwanese are known for cooperatively queuing in stark contrast to mainlanders, while Canadians are famous for how friendly they are. There's a better health care system than the US/China, but a much lower population.

At 9:39. California is definitely Guangdong, not Florida. Yes, Guangdong is steamy and jungly. But it's also the most populous province of China with its largest provincial economy, just like California in the US. It's also the tech center of China, just like California is. If you throw in Hong Kong, then you get the Hollywood of China, just like L.A. with California. Both also have lots of mountains. Florida I think is more like Fujian--still jungly and moist, with large cities, but less important.
One correction I would like to make. A Chinese immigrant who has been in America for a long time is most likely from Taishan in Guandong province, not Fujian. This is why Taishanese is the most dominant dialect spoken in old school Chinatowns in the USA.
Tianjin should have been Virginia. Practically indistinguishable from the capital, but technically different. I miss Tianjin so much. I didn't get to travel much, but going to Huhot made me feel like I was home in New Mexico. Also, you shattered every New Mexicans heart by saying great Mexican food. We eke out our identity mostly through the food we held on to since colonial times while being largely isolated, even as we gained statehood. If you ever get a chance to come to New Mexico I will gladly show you what New Mexican food is about. Then maybe I'll finally have someone to practice Chinese with here!
Yes, especially in the Dallas area. This suburb about 20 miles north of Dallas called Plano, Which is where I live, has a lot of chinese immigrants from Sichuan.
At 12:04. Like I said earlier, Fujian is the Florida of China. Tropical with a beach culture, and distinctly different from the rest of the country. Fujian and Florida are still economically important, but not as important as California or Guangdong or Shanghai or NYC.

I'm surprised about Liaoning and Pennsylvania. For me, Nanjing is much like Philadelphia due to it being the home city of China's and the USA's modern political revolutions. Though it is true that Jiangsu state does not resemble Pennsylvania with no mountains and the vibe isn't rough like PA is. Also I always felt Guangdong is China's California (huge coastal state, massive population and centers of tech and industry). Interesting video!
I lived in Reno for 7 years. It really is a wasteland up there. The west is the alps, the east is a fire burned desert hellscape. You immediately enter Nevada, and the Californian firs die off almost immediately, and you go from this luscious alpine green to this brown waste almost suddenly.

Hey @laowhy86, Qinghai was renamed from Amdo, which is 1 of the 4 historic regions of Bod (Tibet). Amdo was the battleground between the Bod Buddhist and Hui Muslim warlords. KMT supported the Hui Muslims and defeated the Buddhists, and then to humiliate them, renamed this part as Qinghai and Gansu province. Occupied Bod (Tibet) is almost half the size of actual China which invaded it, Manchuria, Mongolia, and Turkestan. Qinghai is very much a part of Tibet, and the birthplace of the 14th Dalai Lama. Please do not mislead people and say it is not part of Tibet.
