I dated a girl in Peru briefly. One weekend she and her mother invited me to go for a drive to a nearby town. I accepted, thinking we would see some scenery during the three hour drive before returning. Most of the scenery was some awful traffic jams we got into. She took us to a restaurant for lunch. When the bill came , she looked at me for payment. I'm thinking, "hey, you are the one who invited me. You never told me there was a meal involved and on my dime, too!" In the US at least, the custom is whomever does the inviting pays for any meal that arises. Maybe they were just trying to take advantage of me because I was American.

It actually doesn't mean much up here either, though women like to rely on that excuse. The Peruvian women would routinely invite themselves to lunch/dinner/drinks on me.
