Thank you for your insight on cutting mats. I've always wondered how the mats held up to cutting and self-healed. I've been looking for a 36" x 60" self-healing cutting mat (preferably white and black) without success. I've found a couple cutting mats that size but they are made of PVC or LDPE (what ever that is :-) and not considered to be " self-healing". I'm wondering if you have ever used this kind of mat and, if so, what your experience was.

I have used the PVC mats but only in a professional sense, not for everyday cutting. What I found there was that we had to replace them every 6 months or so because we would literally cut it in half by making repeated cuts at the 1/2 yard line. That being said they don't cost as much, but it wound up being about the same as us getting a more costly mat that would last us a year or more simply bc we would have to replace them more often. Alvin makes great large cutting mats, and thats what we eventually swapped back to because it was less waste, though I don't think they come in black and white. And I do LOVE a black and white cutting mat. The Tattooed Quilter has one that's great black on one side and white on the other. It's put out by Riley Blake, but I think it only comes in 24" x 36".

Self healing doesn’t literally mean it will heal. It will sort of tighten back up after it gets cut or scratched. PVC IS self healing in that send. LDPE (low density polyethylene) is good on your blades and even better is HDPE (high density polyethylene). The best is Acetal/Delrin but it is a lot more expensive. It will however last the longest and cuts and scratches can just be smoothed over using a bone folder/plastic bone folder. You can google them all three online and have them cut to you specific liking. I’ve covered my 72”x30” workbench in a 1/4” thick 72”x24” Acetal sheet.still looks new. It is like a cutting board (same with HDPE and LDPE). Acetal is a bit pricey so maybe try HDPE.
