“I think the plot armor was worn a little tight this episode“ That is the best part, Stuart. There was no plot armor in the session that episode was based on. It was pure luck and chaos. It has lived in infamy and legend among the critical role fans.

It's true but I'm sure Stuart knows this. The fact that the major points of this episode did actually happen within the rules of D&D doesn't necessarily mean the adapted version didn't still feel plot armor-y. This was a challenge the show had to face in pretty much everything it did. It can't assume it's audience understand the mechanics of D&D so it can't rely on them. In D&D we understand that characters have the mechanics of spell casting but in show it will seem like it comes out of nowhere in a very ex machina (irony isn't lost on me) manor. The show needs to establish what the characters can do and what they can't do. If the adaptation was verbatim this problem would happen a LOT. In general the show handled it well. With that particular incident I think there just wasn't a good way to translate it and still keep the scene in tact. So it was keep it and have it feel ex machina or remove the scene or alter it beyond recognition. They chose to keep it and that's a choice I agree with. But it does have heavy plot armor vibes to it in the show.

@eliezeririzarry247
@eliezeririzarry247 2 года назад
I'm sorry, but what you're saying misses the point, too. The choice Pike had to make wasn't between "the church" or her friends. The Everlight doesn't even present the question that way (like, it's the complete opposite actually haha). Her message, and the thing Pike was struggling with, was that you shouldn't treat the separate parts of yourself like they're completely separated and at war with eachother. You need to be assertive in your conviction that the path you choose to walk will take you to a better place, and that it is the path you're meant to take, because that is where the separate parts of you can work together. Pike felt ashamed and thought her religious skills as a cleric were weak because she lived a wild life with her friends , which was a self-fulfilling prophecy that weakened her own faith. She also thought that focusing on her cleric duties and trying to figure things out made her a liability to her friends, which just created more self-doubt that was getting in the way of her ability so she actually became a liability. Her choice was to believe The Everlight when she said "any path can be a holy one" and took the middle path. The one where she doesn't have to worry that her faith to her patron and her loyalty to her friends will clash, because she is going to use one to strengthen the other and vice-versa. She chose the path that will lead to the ultimate version of herself that she wishes to become, and now that she believes that it's possible, she gets hella stronger and more confident as a result.

That's fair, but he's also one that stands for a fair fight, is genuinely a nice guy as long as you aren't a dick, and is the type to go the distance for others especially his friends. Maybe Lawful Good is a bit much, but he's at least Good aligned in this series.
@Birthday888
@Birthday888 2 года назад
@@Mrryn The way Stuart tracks alignment is going to make Grog good, because above all else, Grog loves his friends. The chaotic neutral portion of his character comes from the fact that he'd probably be fine if his friends were more morally grey or cruel, because his morals are mostly wrapped up in what his friends think is good or bad. If the group had decided to GTFO out of Whitestone, Grog would probably be fine leaving an entire city under the rule of an evil necromancer and vampire couple. So yeah, Grog is going to appear more CG because VM is mostly good aligned.

I didn’t watch Critical Role and still found the cartoon to be understandable and fun so I’d say it was a success. My biggest problem (aside from the first two episodes) was the mentor character. Percy talks about the guy like he was a beloved member of the family who unexpectedly betrayed everyone. Then the flashback showed him as an angry, venomous jerk from the start. It makes the Derolos look like idiots for trusting the guy.

Yeah, that felt weird to me too (I've only just started the stream so I haven't reached this part yet). Like their parents randomly checking in and throwing out that line about "endangering the heirs" and their behavior seemed like they didn't actually like or trust him. Plus Percy and Cass both seemed a little uncomfortable when he called Cass up, and neither of them seemed surprised at all when he got rude and venomous after their parents left - like it was nothing new.

Pike started Lawful Good but became Neutral Good after her being confronted by the Everlight and being taught that being her true self that was what the Everlight desired of her; and that truth was she needed her friends and they needed her. Keylith is Neutral Good with Lawful leanings. Scanlan, Vex and Val are all Chaotic good with the twins straddling the line with Neutral. I think episode 1 not being good is the point. Much like a new party, the show itself is trying to find its footing. On the subject of Percy, his player and VA, Taliesin Jaffe is REALLY good at making interesting, soulful, or morally dubious characters and puts his all into them.

I think Grog is more neutral good or Chaotic good. Maybe Stupid Good. Percy starts Neutral, leaning a tiny bit into evil because of his craving for revenge, while understandable the selfish nature of it in D&D alignments would be evil. However due to what happens in the story I think he ends up moving into chaotic or neutral good territory by the end.
@fandomonium3789
@fandomonium3789 Год назад
I would argue that Percy's vengeance is more Lawful Evil than Chaotic Evil. He's still sticking to a very specific list. Lawful is an adherence to a creed or pact, and the people he kills are on his list. Blowing off the servant's fingers was Chaotic Evil, there was no reason for it. But killing Stonefell and the others on his list is an act I would label as Lawful Evil since he made a contract with a fiend for their lives and souls, and killing them is upholding that contract, even if Percy is unaware of the contract's existance. Killing those on his list is part of his creed for vengeance. It is only hurting those not on his list that would be Chaotic.
@SternenLegion

Grog lawful good I actually agree. But a thing I noticed. You said at some earlier points you gave them lawful good points but moved them to neutral good instead. And I am surprised you didn't give Percy some chaotic evil for his "keyleth is gone, but we got what we came for" line. Rdy to let keyleth die just to finish his revenge

If you think there was plot armor in the episode, you should definitely rewatch the Vox Machina podcast. Honestly? I kind of prefer the animated version. But the Podcast Version makes Scanlan look like a badass and less like a lucky fool. Also; I don't think Pike put the Everlight on Hold. The Everlight specifically said "Choose your path" :o but yeah, NG.

Really? Scanlan in C1 was one of the most powerful and creative casters in all of Exandria, while animated Scanlan looks more like a lucky charlatan. I understand they wanted to up the tension by making the characters weaker, but I think they over did it.
@VirtuesOfSin
@VirtuesOfSin 2 года назад
@@SirSadness I think part of the "most powerful and creative casters" charm was from the player less than the character. Even in-game, the player was like "Oh I forgot I had this!" when looking through his character sheet, and in-character was like "I don't know what this does but bottoms up!" Then again, I'm a fan of the crouching moron hidden badass trope.

@@VirtuesOfSin Yeah, it was from the player, because it's a role-playing game... In the show, he's just another horny bard who can pull some tricks out of his butt. Both are cool characters, but the superior version is clear, and I cannot say the same about the others. It's a shame.

The dice said it was that crazy and Matt Mercer is known to not favor characters if they end up dying he doesn't say they just survive.

Didn't agree with everything you said, but still a good video nonetheless, thank you for making this video. I really loved this cartoon and it's characters (I do wish it was a bit longer, since I love ur videos and this series so much, but almost 30 minutes is still a great amount of time!). If you take suggestions (I don't if the comments would be the best place to do it/them, but I don't know where else to do it), I would love if you did Hunter x Hunter (2011) someday, though I know that would be a big undertaking. I would love to see ur takes on their alignments though, because everyone in HxH are pretty morally gray, and people can have a lot of differing opinions about the characters' alignments from that series.

One of the big criticisms you have for tge show at the end is that the characters don't fit the setting that well. For me, I actually think it's a plus! As you said yourself, it's a D&D campaign first and foremost. And that's EXACTLY what players are like. Personally, I think the problem with a lot of D&D stuff in media is that it actually lacks that touch, making every just feel like a generic fantasy campaign with a brand slapped on it. I'd actually like to see more series do stuff like this to really show that lunacy that D&D can bring. Maybe if another show like this happens, there could be a thing where it jumps from the view of the world, and the the view of the players at the table.

Honestly, I don't think Percy should be so high on the alignment list. By the end at least. He's still not that good of a person, something he'd admit himself. He still harbors resentment and a lot of hate at this point in time despite conquering his demon (though his soul is forever tainted by it). I'd say at the end of season 1, he's lawful evil still, boarding on chaotic evil as he has done extremely evil acts to get his vengeance, and one more would have cemented him as a truly evil person as there would have been nothing left but hate. By the end of Vox Machina's journey as a whole he sits at neutral good. However, that's a long way off and he's just starting to commit to doing good for the sake of good. Not good for selfish reasons like before.
