Been hearing great stuff about the movie which makes me happy because if it does well it tells WoTC that this is a direction of monetization and expanding the dnd brand that we're in support of so we might get more quality products like it.

@@1970joedub while I'm all for them when actually creating things as long as they are quality, I will never be quite settled with DnD and WoTC until Hasbro has been excommunicated from the mix like the tumor they are. I am pretty sure that what true allies of the community there are on the corporate level are almost certainly far more concentrated within WoTC than Hasbro. Hasbro was, is, and will always be a corporation that exists to profit first, and create cool things only incidentally, to generate profit. Wizards, at LEAST, has proven for years that agood portion of their employees are passionate role players, cosplayers, and creators, too.

Would love a spoiler video! I'm admittedly something of a movie-snob, but damn this movie did so much better than I thought it would. It was clever, witty, well-paced, full of heart, beautifully shot, I could just go on and on. It's no LotR by any means, but it's not trying to be. In a world hyper-saturated by hero franchises and spinoffs, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I would love more DnD movies like this. Hasbro, I will happily give you my money for content like this, if you can manage to hold onto this quality. Yes please, more.

I got a hold of the prequel comic Feast of the Moon. Can recommend going through that first, gives good insight or the characters. I will see this one to the weekend with my main D&D group and 1-2 groups after. The ttrpg club leader is also gonna roll dice for two free tickets.

I completely agree! I too had so many reservations but the film completely won me over in every way! All the shortcomings were minor enough that I didn't care at all and am just so so happy that this film exists! I was grinning from ear to ear the whole way through!

Was skeptic too. Was awesome. There were some things that I might have picked at for being contrived in other movies, but they were very much based in game mechanics. LOVED the spells. Hate when magic turns into blasting different colours at each other. Was so cool to see to spells being different. Actually identifiable, even if you don't know them you can figure out what the spell was and/or was doing. Loved how they messed with concentration 😂😂😂 Wild shape. O.M.G. It felt like how so many sessions have gone with random out of the box thinking and things getting totally derailed 😂😂😂 Brilliant acting.

This was an amazing movie. Yes the way they handled the attunement of that item in movie was like OMG that felt like a Matthew Mercer concept like you could see the rolls going in in the story. I can't gush about this movie enough. #lovepoorJernathon.

A wonderfully bonkers film. I cried for a minute too! I've played D&D many times and didn't expect something this good. I prefer the old D&D game systems to new ones - as I think all the current 5th edition feats and class abilities detract from people improvising and make it feel more like a computer game. (My favourite system for crazy improvising is the very old Classic Marvel RPG with the FASERIP stat system. When I GM'd the rather rigid Trail of Cthulhu RPG, I let players use the Classic Marvel RPG system for combat and athletic stuff, for more of an action/improvisation frisson).

Honestly, I thought it was hilarious, but the plot was really lacking (all the "twists" were super predictable) and it felt lacking a lot of the D&D vibe (not the setting, just the vibe). I did like it, just didn't love it. It's a pretty good sign that my biggest complaint is the depiction of halflings.

obivously subjective and all, but for me it gave off strong DnD vibes. i really liked it, specifically for that. I agree with you on the predictability, but i don't think that really took away from it...i mean, ultimately, obviously the good guys were gonna win and the bad guys were gonna get their comeuppance. i don't think the 'twists' really were meant to feel all that twisty. as for the depiction of tieflings....tieflings can be naturally human colored. its not common for players to play them that way...but its not a violation of lore...at least not 5e lore, im too lazy to look up earlier edition tieflings. and if they'd had a larger budget where they could have CGI'd her skin, then that woulda been really cool. but due to their budget they clearly were going for mostly practical effects, and i can understand why they wouldn't wanna put one of their leads in full body make-up. shits dangerous

i think its a bit reductive to call holga a barbarian. to me she felt more like a mix of barbarian and fighter. She definitely had some of that 'strongman' vibes from teh barbarian, but also the genuine fluid and obviously well trained combat style that fighters are meant to exemplify

She doesn't rage and she never feeds on her anger in combat. Maybe unarmored defense and she has big axe but fighters can wield axes too. She is referred to as a barbarian in the movie but Edgin also calls himself a bard and he is at best bard adjacent, maybe a low level rogue with a musician background and the inspiring leader feat.

@@XanderHarris1023 tbf they released special statblocks for all of them. and while to some extent they borrowed from PC classes, they didn't entirely rip them. for example, holga has reckless attack and unarmored defense, but not rage, and she has a BA shove. and improvised weapon prof. edgin, interestingly enough, does have magic. its just not super flashy, its moslty things like suggestion, friends, charm person. he also has a feature called 'disorienting words' which is a slightly beefed up vicous mockery.

Amazon Prime members were able to buy tickets to an early screening event across the country. Not a bad move, shows they were confident the movie would be well received, and that word of mouth would help.

This is exactly the reasonable ask the community has wanted. That WoTC compete by producing quality things instead of trying to contractually screw their own playerbase and attempt to create a monopoly that'd fail trying to force feed lower and lower quality garbage at higher and higher premium, while stealing from the piggy banks of ppl like our dear ol' coach here 😁. I'm all for rewarding good moves, and will hold continue to hold them accountable for bad moves without hesitation.

Great review. The continued talk about WotC and how they were going to, but never did betray their fans is getting a bit old. They have since fixed their mistake and people need to move on. I wish you the best with your own new TTRPG ruleset but lets see if it's still around in 5 or so years. DnD, and WotC will still be here, and you will likely be back playing DnD because it will still be the main game everyone is playing.

I don't know, haven't seen it yet. I'm gonna predict that Dungeonmaster teleports them away off camera, lol. What was the damn bad guy's name is that cartoon (I have to admit, even as a kid I found it so kitchy I just couldn't like it, lol). It's funny... My mom was such a satanic panic zealot, she wouldn't even let us watch the cartoon if she was home when it was on. Why? Because... Dungeons and Dragons in the name. Dear lord I sure hope she's "grown up" enough in the ensuing 40 years that she can manage to watch and enjoy this film! She was stone cold anti -fantasy, period, until LOTR. That movie and JRR Tolkien being such a well known Christian went a long way towards getting her to understand how hysterical the anti DnD rhetoric was. Oh!! "Venger" that's the villains name!

Funny how one dnd youtuber finds the film meh in terms of humor or emotion, because the jokes weren't laugh-worthy and the emotional moments didn't have any impact because the film didn't allow for any real character development due to the ridiculous pacing, and then there's you, who had a completely different reaction to the same aspects..

Ya, I've seen most ppl find it enjoyable, some really finding the humor was exactly their taste. Others said the humor wasn't quite there, but they enjoyed the show. We're getting a pretty broad range of responses that, interestingly, mostly agree that the show was fun, but are across the spectrum as far as certain aspects landing or not. Seems like a pretty fair, honest representation of varied tastes. I feel like it's a pretty good sign. For me, over the top humor has a fine line where it can become hard to bear, lol. I'm interested to see where this lands on that note.

Spoiler warning!!! When Simon tries to attune to the helmet to him time stops and he has a conversation with his great grandfather. But when he fails time continues. To everyone else barely a second passes. What if we did something like that in our games? Powerful wizard + low magic item = a few minutes for the wizard during that frozen time. A inexperienced wizard + a high leveled magic item = over a year for the wizard during that frozen time.

The directors were trolling overly sensitive , emasculate men who are insecure and tend to react hysterically to being trolled by things like this. Ppl act exactly like you happen to be acting right now, I'll note. A suggestion... Lighten up, Mr woke radar and early warning system, lmao. Secure men don't obsess over who might be emasculating whom, because their sense of identity is intact regardless. Seriously though, don't get so hung up on shit like this. I want a good D&D movie as much as any other fan but nothing has made me want to give this movie a chance. I respect Dungeon Coach's take on things related to the game and he is the only good review i have seen.

Well, if you do wind up enjoying it, I hope you're willing to grow a pair and admit it, lol. But if coach creates some killer content, why would you retaliate against a Kickstarter to fund it over him liking a movie you didn't? They're completely unrelated. We'll soon all know for ourselves whether the movie is at least fun enough that some ppl really loving the hell out of it is reasonable. But don't frame that as connected to a passive aggressive retaliation against content you DO enjoy. How is that at all productive, lol? Ginny Di, Roll for Combat, P'reviewd, Dungeon Dudes, Bob World Builder, Paizo, kobold press, they've all come out in reviews, many also pleasantly surprised that the show was actually pretty good. These are the very ppl who kept the community up to date with the OGL issue, and broke the news to begin with. They organized the DnD Begone boycott and other anti OGL campaigns, protest moves, and delivered the most aggressive, blistering criticism of anyone. Their reviews are there. It's hard to buy that WoTC turned every last one of them into shills, lol. Isn't it more likely that the movie might actually just be pretty decent? Btw, the positive reviews are so plentiful it's hard to believe you haven't seen them. But for the record, keep in mind that if you doomscroll and tend to click on a lot of clickbait reaction farming videos, your feed will stay flooded with confirmation bias for several weeks before clearing itself, and it'll only clear out if you stop clicking on the bait, lol. It's easy to lose perspective and start to think reactionary hysteria vids are representing reality that way. Anyways, I guess I'll see, too. If the movie isn't at least moderately enjoyable, my cynicism meter is gonna flat out break 😁

@@chipsalom was actually planning on keeping tabs on this to put my verdict either way. I'll even double down and say I will DOUBLE what I put in the Kickstarter if I am pleasantly surprised. I have actually blocked DD, Ginny amd Bob because they are all cringe and their outlook is antithetical to what makes this game great; their endorsements support my confirmation bias. No clue who the others are but I would recommend Grumpy Old Grognar and Ed Greenwood's channels if you like old school D&D.
