In this video Kevin Hicks takes a look at what a medieval foot soldier, a billman, may have worn during the 15th century, Wars of the Roses period. Kevin, his son Josh and Steve Arnold, members of the Oxford Household re-enactment group, will show you how they would have armed and equipped a foot soldier of that time.

Even though it was brief, I really liked the demonstration of how the billmen formed up. Movies and such typically just have the guys in front doing all the work and never show the 2nd or 3rd rank doing anything.

What was medieval battlefield communication like? I assume there would be signals from flags and instruments passing information up and down to commanders; with that assumption, I believe there would have been code books. And having the necessity to keep those private or secret.

Considering how thick all of the other clothing is (Not just the armor), it's rather surprising that the livery coat which is meant to identify him looks much more delicate. And that it could rot off sounds rather dangerous when it comes to identifying your opponent. The standard of mail made me think of the gorget of centuries in the future.
@SQUIRRELSONASTICK
@SQUIRRELSONASTICK 2 года назад
I theorize that could be because it sits on top. The livery is going to take a lot of damage just by virtue of existing over the armor, so why bother with heavy material when something light and easy is going to get just as ripped just as fast.

@SQUIRRELSONASTICK
@SQUIRRELSONASTICK 2 года назад
@@peterwallace9764, exactly! So it's not actually needed for the protection of the wearer, and would therefore be "extra weight". Remembering that these men (or at least, their underlings) would carry their gear to and from battle. Not to mention have to wear the damn stuff. Why invest in heavy livery if it's extra baggage and is just going to get banged to fuck anyway? Far better to keep a decent seamster on payroll and whip a new one up as needed.

Tod of Tod's Workshop has a series of video showing just how well Mediveal Plate armor from around the time of the Battle of Agincourt stands up to a high poundage Engliish/Welsh longbow. In the first video of the series, the archer misses the target which was an authentic replica breastplate and hits the mail skirt under it and it goes clean through, almost like it wasn't there.

That was one of the main reasons why European armies eventually stopped wearing armor, not because of the appearance of gunpowder weapons, but because it got to be too expensive to equip all of the troops with armor when the government was expected to pay for it.

You always hear about men at arms, knights and archers but almost nothing about household retainers or the levies. The retainer billman's armor has quite a gaping weakness between his plate armor and bishop's mantle. His upper chest only has 1 layer of maille sewn to the jack protecting it. And that maille has a gap in in the middle as well. It seems like you'd want more armor in that center mass region, considering he's already gone through the trouble of armoring midriff and legs with plate level protection.

Oh, I know ALL about the importance of hand protection, even in a simulated battle! I was once in the SCA (either Society for Creative Anachronism, or Society for Consenting Adults, depending on the activity in question). Weapons were crafted from rattan (a springy sort of wood-ish material), and armor could be anything from thick leather to some reasonably well-made (and costly) replica armor, though for some time, we cobbled together body armor from layered carpet scraps and helmets could be converted from air conditioner freon compressor tanks. As for gauntlets? Hockey gloves! And in the days before Amazon, that usually meant mail order from out of state (as there was little hockey played here in the deep South). But we had fun, with re-enactments such as the Battle of Stamford Bridge, and serious injuries were few. I can only imagine what re-enacting with real steel in your hand must be like (more careful, I must think, than pugilistic scrums with padded sticks in our hands had to be). Of course, there was also feasting and revelry after the day's fighting, with authentic medieval cuisine (and beverages!) and music, crafting, lore, and heraldry competitions and such to round out the experience... Now look at what you've made me do; I've gone all nostalgic! =^[.]^=
@thehistorysquad
@thehistorysquad Год назад
😜 The SCA seems a lot more tame than British and European reenactments. I only had contact with the SCA once down near Denver. I was dressed as an English bowman and there was a girl dressed in what I would describe as questionable/revealing clothing. All I said to her was, in medieval times I would have thrown her over my shoulder and carried her away and she burst into tears. She apparently thought I was really going to do it. I wasn't very popular
