Faith without works is a dead faith , true faith always produces works because you actually love God when regenerated. The thief on the cross would have surely produced works if he had lived longer. You are right that our works don’t save us, but works do matter, so much so that the son had to live a perfect life for us. Works are a by product of a Christian, the result of conversion.

James 2 clarifies what Paul was teaching and what He meant by that and its not what most people today believe. @Jen I see where you are coming from and I have faced that problem many times - some people call themselves 'Christians', some in high positions at Church etc., but they deny Christ through their actions. See Titus 1:16 “They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.” These people are 'Christians in name only' and they do not know God or love Him - If they did, they would keep His commandments (John 14:15). These are the people who attend Church on Sunday but the night before they were out going to nightclubs, partying, getting drunk, sleeping with their boyfriend etc. They feel zero godly sorrow and conviction and do not repent nor turn from their wickedness. Maybe 5, 10, 20 years ago they prayed prayer and they started off on their walk with Christ really good but then something happened - they got "chocked" by "cares, riches, pleasures", or things got too hard, or the devil stole the word out of their heart (see the parable about the seed in Luke 8:11-18). Unfortunately these are the branches in John 15 who, even though "in Christ", refuse to produce good fruit. If you read this passage, the fate of such people are too be thrown into the lake of fire. And they are not victims as it was their 'choice' to "quench" and "resist" the Holy Spirit. God gave each one of us free will, He is not going to force us to follow Him. Only His sheep follow Him. The prodigal son had to make a choice to go back home. Timothy 2:19 says "Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” If you call yourself a Christian and name the name of Christ, you need to depart from iniquity and deny the "old man" (who you were before you knew Christ and before the Holy Spirit entered into the equation). Please also note that any 'good work' you do, you are not able to do without Christ! (John 15:5). All your goodness belongs to Him! His Spirit gives you strength to sin less and repent more! That's why we were given the Holy Spirit! We are not saved BY our works but we are saved FOR them. “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure”(Philippians 2:13). Its Christ in us. We do nothing! We just love God. We love His words (Psalm 118). We love His commandments and "they are not burdensome" (1 John 5:3). His yoke is light and easy. When the Lord tells us to depart from evil and "sin no more" we say yes and Amen! Truly it is freedom! We are freed from our sin! He gives us strength and power to do so! Why go back to the "dogs vomit" (2 Peter 2:22)? No. Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior said "you will know them by their fruit". Good fruit is not the same as bad fruit. Following Christ is not the same as not following Christ. Keeping Gods word is not the same as not keeping Gods word. Born again temples of the Holy Spirit have power to "overcome" sin. And it is not perfection - there is a stark difference between a lifestyle of continual habitual unrepentant sin and someone "born of God" having a stumble. The person "born of God", feels godly sorrow, confesses their sin (1 John 1:9), dusts themself off and goes right back to running the race. This is the born-again reality. I pray that this you and that you are operating in this power. If, using discernment, you think someone you know is 'a Christian in name only' pray for them. Ask God to grant them godly sorrow and repentance. Help that person to know the true Christ and His will, being patient and gentle (2 Timothy 2:24). However, know that sometimes true believers differ in doctrine, so try and avoid pointless conflict (Titus 3:9). Also, each of our journeys look different and each of us are at a different stage so try not to judge. As long as that person is doing their best to follow God, to keep his commandments and walk in faith - give glory to God! But if, something is really wrong in their walk do what James 5:20 says and convert them "from the error"' of their way, saving their soul "from death". For how can you be under grace if you don't do what it teaches (Titus 2:11)? "For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world." Really great books in the Bible that talk about this is the book of James. Also, look at the first and second epistles of Peter. If you are further interested, I also highly recommend the RU-vid Channel: thefigtreeminsitry as they do a really go job discussing what it means to be born-again, turn away from sin and follow after God. This channel has played a massive role in my own salvation. Remember: "few there be that be that find it". If you follow Christ you will lose a lot - friends, family, homes, jobs. You will go through trials and times of difficulty. You might feel that you are all alone, that there is no one who understands. But God does understand and you are not alone. There is only one path. There is only one way. We cannot save ourselves by any other means. We can DO nothing. Grace, mercy, atonement, propitiation, and His love and forgiveness are better than luck or fate. God expects no one to tempt destiny. Many will not have a chance. Yes. They do it by His Spirit which can only mean one thing: "God is faithful, He never leave and He won't" even when He is used to gain something immoral on the back. 2 Timothy 2:13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

I take that they are believers. Every believer will do works but some do Gold worth works but others straw. The ones who do straw worth work don't enter the kingdom of heaven but are cast outside the kingdom of heaven though they still have eternal life. The known to me is not about accepting the death burial and resurrection but relational in that they didn't spread the Gospel and live as holy as they should have. 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw- each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. None the less who they are is a secondary issue and not a salvation issue. Why they got rebuke is important and we should not rest on the fact that Jesus died for our sins alone since we are required to live a life of fruitfulness.

You're making the same error the Galatians made, which is why Paul gave them a very stern talking-to, even much more stern than he did with the church in Corinth who were living in blatant and habitual sin. What's required of us is to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, since this is the will of the Father. Period. SHOULD we live right? Of course we should, but that's neither a requirement for salvation nor a requirement to keep salvation. Please show me in Scripture, without ripping verses out of context, where Scripture even says that. Believe upon the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved, Paul told the Philippian jailer. No added requirement. Or did the Lord or His disciples leave a pertinent part out? I don't think so. No, the ones He never knew will be the ones trying to keep the Mosaic Law, who delude themselves that their works count for anything, who don't comprehend that even our best works are filthy rags, as Paul put it. Those who slap the Savior across the face, saying what He did wasn't adequate or enough, they have to add their works and law-keeping to it because they pretend to trust Christ, yet do that terrible thing. Jesus Christ alone is the narrow gate and the strait path. You give lip service about not being saved by works, yet your train of thought, your words and your actions indicate you don't believe that at all, nor have you understood the Gospel of Christ.

When you correct a person, we are commanded in scripture not insult them but in gentleness rebuke them in hope that they may come to know the truth (2 timothy 2:25). It is meant to be done in love. Not accusing them of not knowing or understanding the "gospel of Christ" or them giving "lip service" or them slapping the "Savior across the face". As believers, we can disagree. It's undesirable but it happens. That's life. But we are still brothers and sisters in Christ. So we should treat one another as such. But the Truth, the Lord Jesus, tells us to love others as we love ourselves. If you held a wrong doctrine would you have someone correct yourself like you did @Lisa? You would not want that person to insult you. And if anything, using your own argument, YOU do not understand the Gospel of Christ because if you did, you would do what it says. Christ commands us, in the New Testament, to love our neighbor (John 13:34). If you love Christ you would keep His commandments (John 14:21-26). This applies to us all. Forget works, it comes down to: do you love Christ? If you love Christ you would do what He says, if you do not love Christ you will not do what He says. If you not do what He says, you are instead doing the works of the Devil (1 John 3:8, John 8:44). Pick and chose whose side are you on - the devil or Christ. In Matthew 7:20 Jesus said , "by their fruit you will know them". Jesus said you can tell those who belong to Him because, like obedient sheep they "follow" Him (John 10:4-5) and they "abide in Him" producing good fruit (John 15). Those who do not belong to Christ produce bad fruit and they do not follow Him by definition. If you truly loved Christ you would have good fruit in your life because you would keep His commands. Further, you can never be saved by your good fruit or the keeping of His commands as we are saved by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ and to say anything less is heresy. But, if you have zero works in you life, are in continual, habitual, unrepentant sin and and produce bad fruit yet still profess to be a Christian - then something is seriously wrong. "What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?" (James 2:14-17). According to James, our faith is made perfect by works. Jesus said “why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and **do** not the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46). You cannot steamroll over the 'hundreds' of New Testament direct commands and exhortations that tell us to "pluck out", "cast off", "abide", "follow", "depart", "run", "strive", "endure" and think you can ignore them or that they are of little importance. The Word of God is very clear about sin - we are told to me "no" provision for the flesh, to "depart from iniquity", to "flee youthful lusts". James 1:22 says "but be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves". See also Romans 6:2 where it says "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." As shown by Romans 6:2 'living right' is not a requirement for salvation, but it is a INDICATOR of salvation. See also Titus 2:14. If you are not living right nor walking in the newness of life but living a powerless life, enslaved to sin and darkness there is a strong chance you are not born again and do not have the Holy Spirit dwelling in you. That's what Matthew 7:18 means when it says "a good tree cannot bear bad fruit and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit". When you are 'saved' you literally have an "appointment" to go and bear good fruit (John 15:16) by Christ. We are not saved 'by' our works but we are saved FOR them. And these works don't even belong to us! They belong to to Christ because without Him we could do nothing (John 15:5). I do not agree with @Lisa nor do I agree with you. You are trying to remove the speck in you sister's eye while there remains a plank in your own. It's not 'works are needed for salvation' its 'works are needed because of salvation'. For a long time I struggled with this concept because I thought the sin in my life and the lack of fruit, while not the best, was okay. Little did I realize it was a clear sign I wasn't born again, didn't receive the Holy Spirit and was on my way to hell (John 3:5). No, with the Holy Spirit comes power over sin. We are made free and are no longer bondage to the works of darkness because Christ now works in us. May the Lord bless you. Yes, as believers we can disagree about non-essential issues. However, the issue of salvation is not a non-essential one, it's one of the core doctrines of Christianity. If a person adds works to salvation in any way, then I don't consider them a brother or sister in Christ because if that's all they've ever believed then they're not saved. This is the same false gospel the Judaizers taught that Paul dealt with in his letter to the Galatians. You don't even know me, yet you make many assumptions about me, like that I advocate living in sin. I don't. Sin has temporal consequences and ruins our witness to a fallen world. However, when it comes to sin, the older I get, the more aware I am of sin in my life and that sin is a condition of our fallen flesh. I don't even mean "obvious" or "big" sins, but sins many aren't even aware of. Boredom is a sin. A moment of fear or worry is a sin. Complaining is a sin. I could go on and on. We'll never be without sin as long as we're stuck in these fallen bodies. Does that mean I'm saying it's hopeless, go sin it up all you want? No, of course not. I don't know why you make that assumption going by what I said.

Works are the outward manifestation of the Holy Spirit in you when you are born again. If it is not a good work it is a bad work and vice versa. So, when you make statements like that, the logical conclusion reached by many is that because they are "saved by grace through faith" and not of works, therefor a life with zero works or works of the devil must mean they can still go to heaven - because works aren't necessary for salvation or to keep it. Little do they realize that the implication of their desire to not follow Christ's commandments says everything. In scripture they are referred to as the "wicked and lazy servants" or those servants with the "one talent/ one mina" (Matthew 25:26-27Matthew 25:14-30 , Luke 19:12-27). Atheist's are not servants of the Lord and neither would the Lord give them His precious talents and minas. These are Christians. These are also the lukewarm and if one is "vomited" 'out' of Gods mouth there is no way that at the same time you can be 'in' Christ. I am not saying that you personally live a life of sin or that you think sin is okay. Or that this is you. But this is what other 'Christians' believe in. A vast majority. Some will even tell you, that if you have good works in your life you are the one going to hell because you are trying to earn your salvation. Do you see the problem? To them, a born-again Christian who loves the Lord and keeps His commandments is Lordship salvation or some form of legalism. I agree, its impossible to have no sin in your life and that even the smallest sins deserve death. And without the Lord Jesus Christ, the cross, His blood all of us would be doomed. The difference is that those born-again, still fight the good fight each and every day. They run the race and when the do sin they confess and repent (1 John 1:9). But unrepentant, continual and habitual sin has ETERNAL consequence. That wicked and lazy servants, those one talent/mina servants were thrown into HELL. Sawed in half and thrown into the flames. These are Christians. Those in Revelation 2 are Christians who "trample of the blood of Jesus and count it a common thing" and remain in the things the Lord hates. They refuse to come out of sin. They go "back to the dog's vomit" (2 Peter 2:22). *Romans 6:12-14: Therefore do not let sin* reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. *Do not* offer any part of yourself to *sin* as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. Hey! I can understand why you're fearful, it must be hard to really want to do things for God but not be able to. However, I don't think you need to be afraid of being condemned by God, because "there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." (Romans 8:1). "It is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9). "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." (John 6:29) and many, many other parts of Scripture that make it clear that we are not saved from God's judgement by ANYTHING we can do, because we fall so far short of God's standard that if our salvation depended on us doing good things, no one would be good enough except Jesus himself. Instead, we are ONLY saved by Jesus taking the punishment for our sin on himself. Jesus took all of the condemnation we would have gotten, so now we can truly say that despite what we deserve, if we believe in the One God has sent, we have no condemnation. So while I can understand why you're afraid, and I worry about whether my salvation is secure all the time, you and I don't need to fear any condemnation because of anything to do with what we're doing. If you're doing the work of God-- which Jesus himself said is simply believing in him--, then you're saved from God's judgement, and in the words of Jesus again, "whoever comes to me I will never drive away." (John 6:37b.) Still, it must be incredibly hard not to be able to do things that you want to do out of love for Jesus, like sharing the gospel and remembering Scripture. Something that may be encouraging is Ephesians 2:10, which says that we were "created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." God has already prepared good works for you to do, which means that even if you have no idea what they'll be or how you're going to be able to do them, God has already planned them in advance-- which means that God HAS good works for you to do. God knows everything you've been through, and understands that you can't remember Scripture. He is still with you and still has plans for you, even though you might not know what they are or how they could actually happen. God used Moses to attempt to convince Pharaoh to let the Israelites out of slavery, even though Moses struggled with speaking. God used David to be Israel's king even though in the beginning he was a tiny shepherd boy and the youngest of a whole bunch of older, stronger brothers. God is able to use you do glorify himself, despite your struggles-- in fact, he may even use your struggles to show how powerful he is! In short, no one who believes that Jesus's death and resurrection has taken away their sin and therefore made them right with God ever has to fear that God will condemn them for their sins. The condemnation already happened two thousand years ago. And despite how it may seem, God does have plans for good works for you to do for him. I will be praying for you, my sibling and friend. I'm sorry for everything that you've been through, and I pray that God looks after you. I pray that he gives you assurance of the fact that through Jesus, you are saved, and that he uses you to glorify himself.

The Sabbath my friend, was only for the people of Israel to keep. Also only up to the cross of Jesus. We are in the New Cov for 2,000+ years already! 'For the Christ is the END of the law. And because of Him, God HAS transferred His perfect righteousness to all who BELIEVE'. Rom 10:4 Also Gal 2:16 '..but the faith OF Jesus, the Messiah! Hís faithfulness, not ours, HAS saved us and we HAVE received God's perfect righteousness'. (as if we've never sinned). 'Even king David himself speaks to us regarding the complete wholeness that comes inside a person when God's powerful declaration of righteousness is heard over our life. Apart from our works, God's work is enough'. Rom 4:6 + Ps 32:1 (the days of covering sin has brought to an end at the cross. It's now removed forever!).

@@eekay5710 I've had this exact discussion for about 7 years now 😄 We are Israel, woven into the olive tree as the wild branch, the new covenant didn't abolish the law, it abolished the condemnation of sin and death. Would we say that the law of honoring your parents is gone too? Of course not. Paul says "shall we sin so that grace may abound? Heaven no, if anything we UPHOLD the law" Replacement theology teaches that the church replaced Israel, it's a new idea, new doctrine, far from biblical. We are descendents of Abraham, that's the gospel, through this one seed Yeshua, we are woven in, into what? Israel. Messiah being The "end"of the law is simply the "bullseye target" the finished perfect example of how we should try to live, it's not the end as in abolished... Matthew 5:17 Yeshua said he did not come to do away with the law. Look into the Hebrew understanding of the covenants 🙂

Yes, we are the Israel, the real Jew as Rom 2:28,29 have it, plus Gal 6:14-16. 'You are not a Jew if it’s only superficial-for it’s more than the surgical cut of a knife that makes you Jewish. But you are Jewish because of the inward act of spiritual circumcision-a radical change that lays bare your heart. It’s not by the principle of law, but by power of the Holy Spirit. For then your praise will not come from people, but from God himself !' And then the beauty of the law we now wánt to live by.
