Okay hear me out Jenkins. This is a great chance for a new series: Herald History. You get to watch how people just sucked in different patches over the years Think about it. There's over a decade worth of content. I'd watch the shit out it
@@ClearlyKillingIt Well, meta changes constantly so we would be able to see how it progressed and look at the some of the cancerous builds throughout the time. Like, slice of ancient people's lives
You can still do jungles when I don’t get carry or mid I just go jungle like sniper or sf I usually lose though but I don’t care when my roles get stolen
It's soo nostalgic to watching the "old" Dota 2 and the bad memories comes up. The ward 100 gold and sentries comes as pair 200 gold. The courier wasn't free and you should buy the wings for 150 gold after 10 min. The carry always last hited the enemy ward so you cannot get back your money. The pos 2 and pos 1 fights for the courier to deliver items. 🤣
Old map was entirely hand drawn, Valve then made tiles that would make balancing the map much more easier, otherwise they would have to draw the entire thing every time they released a new patch
Not many remember but tide was one of the best junglers at the time. You max anchor smash and you can clear small camp between 30 second and 60 second when was the second spawn(first spawn of jungle creeps was at 30 at the time).
I remember back then playing bloodseeker jungle because I was soo scared of playing in a lane as a carry. I had so many games as bs jungle and at some point I started to have positive impact. 65% winrate on almost 500 games!
I just realized that I playing dota early 2014 and wow that was 8 years ago time just flies by i have alot of good memories from dota back then it was very fun for me when i was young (5 years almost 6) I still enjoy it to this day
In 10 years someone is gonna sit and watch today's dota games and laugh their ass out of what we do. Maybe even someone will react to Jenkins reacting to 8 yo matches in 10 years
@@danngenesispilapil1384 Idk what specifically you mean, like how you look at it? Different people look at SC2 differently lol, there is plenty of ppl of various ages who play it in various ways at various levels, IEM Katowice world championship coming up in a little over a week or so
Man, even just the old beta menu before finding a game has me feeling nostalgic. The map feels so much bigger and more open. The game was so much simpler back then.
I remember the days when Lycan would jungle, solo rosh 7 mins into the game, walk back into jungle and emerge with necronomicon, BKB, boots of travel and vlads at 20 mins and 5 mins later your ancient is gone.
Old map was entirely hand drawn, but they couldn't keep redrawing the whole thing every time they needed to rebalance it, so they said they had to sacrifice graphics in order to balance it more easily (by making tiles that can be assembled together)
There was no aether lens or shard at that time either. Aghs was actually good on Zues before a refresher because ulti would do 400 more dmg after refresher.
I remember a pro game where zsmj was going brown boots into radiance on pl, got the courier roared and his relic stolen, he farmed another and carried. He went over 8k gold before finishing any item. I think LuminousInverse has a lot of these super old pro game replays up. Another great one is when yyf forced the buyback cd with his storm spirit.
i remember when they gave everyone individual couriers. now that was a huge change. i almost kind of miss fighting over control of the courier weirdly enough. it's almost nostalgic now
Spectre needed that fast Radiance (faster than here) because it was the absolutely only way for her to farm competitively against Anti-Mage and PL. Without a fast Radiance, she was completely unusable at that time. The build started to change after the hero got changed over time, we weren't "stupid."
Nothing changed with spec when badman started going urn treads manta and radi later. Ofc spec was unusable if everyone was building starting + brown boots.
old dota back then, when i played drow, i would pick 3rd skill and stats till i get lvl 6. Even then i would only max 3rd skill and stats till possible hahaha
my mmr skyrocketed to 3k when i discovered you can skip tony passive and just go ava toss stats max. i dont even rank up ulti until mid game, just rank 1 ulti with shadowblade at 10ish minutes can kill everything in the game and just snowball from that point onward
To be fair.. I've done a few jungl lc's in my life, and when iron talon was a thing it was actually fairly fast, it's not the best but when the choice is 4 carry picks after you or a support that want's to leech and contest... Don't do it, while you could come out of the jungle at 7-8 min with a blink and murder people it just lets a lane free farm.
everyone talking about the past how always everything was better. when in fact it's nostalgia. I play casually dota now but I think it's has become a lot better
Anyone know how Jenkins managed to get the old client and view old games like this? I'd be interested to go back and look at some of my own replays from when I was first learning the game and dunk on my past self a bit.
Unless you have replays downloaded on your pc from back then and have them saved as local files you can't. Valve deletes them from servers after a while. As for the client I'm sure you can find it online as a simple download
Given present day knowledge, I think they would do pretty well since some ingame concepts such as efficiency in farming as well as revolutionary builds. And you gotta agree, some heroes were stronger back then and could literally wipe out the enemy team easily at the hands of someone who knows how to play well.
So nostalgic :P Its been 2ish years since I last played dota and I've already accumulated 10k hours of it since the early patches. This really brings me back!
Damn, i started playing Dota2 in 2016 and that was a few weeks before Underlord were released and even in that year LC jungle still a thing. What a shame after MK and the Talent feature releases it kinda went down, same as any other jungling hero.
The reason why specs winrate was so low is that the hero had no good way to farm and was weak in lane. The reason why people rushed relic was to have a way to farm. Plenty of wk-s rush midas nowadays too, but the hero farms way better with skeletons
Spectre today plays almost exactly the same as Spectre then, she's had no major reworks aside from her Aghs and Shard. The major difference is people learned rushing Radiance fucking sucks and it's way more consistent to build a Blademail or a Yasha or a Diffusal first. It's especially bad to rush Radiance if you're having a bad game because by the time you get the Radiance, you've already lost.
2014 brought me a lot of memories with Dota 2. I was in the senior year of High School. Me and my classmates usually hung out in the Internet cafe after school to play Dota 2 and LOL. I remember back in the days, during the Luna New Year (around January and February), Valve introduced Lunar New Year Event in which if you win the game with an Event Beast, the winning team will recieve randomly full set of heroes’ outfits. My group hung out during the holidays to get a lot of fun and free sets. I remember we chose the full “Rat” team in which I was Furion jungling, Carry Lycan, Support Shaman, Offlane Beast Master. That was the best strats for event when you want to quick win for free set. Our mmr back in the days were around 2k and with that strat, we had around 65% winning rate. Oh man, Dota 2 was fun back then.
DoTA back in the day was just simply better. I don’t know what it is. There’s so much to pinpoint but it’s like not even the same game anymore. The feel is so different. Shrines, talent tree, all these crazy new items, reworked neutrals and neutral items. Getting exp and gold at a much faster rate. Getting to level 6 took seemingly forever back in the day.
My 8 year anniversary is coming up... I remember those jungle legions and man that was bad. I did try that a few times back in the day as well and it just didn't work... Now, Enigma jungle was a totally different story. With Midas and Iron Talon, well, let's just say the camps fell quickly with the eidolons...
Facts man. Honestly iron talon midas made jungling very viable for couple of heroes back then. Could argue that made jungling a reasonable strat in pubs too. Fun times.
Awww man, those graphics look so beautiful. The map looked like an oil painting. There's clouds creating shadows on the ground, fog in the dire forest, lots of different vegetation in radiant forest, warm colors... I want this back.
I was one of the few beta tester of Dota2. At first there was tutorials and stuff. You play as dragon knight in RPG style. The first map have so much ambient sound like bird chirping, fountain sound is so loud that you can hear it, almost soothing. The first match i play is with ursa. Nobody knows how to play. I just walk up to them and kill them with right clicks. Good old days. Heroes choice is only 60 or something, half of what now.
Somehow this looks so cool. Heroes seem smaller, the map looks gritty (and not so cartoony also with toon characters like Dawnbreaker, hoodwink and Marci). Jungle was at least viable, now it's just brawling brawling brawling. Also look how fragile heroes were. Now everyone has 2000 Hp at level 13 with only few items
You guys are delusional if you think the game would be as snail paced as back then if the patch was still the same. Heroes nowadays get not only higher GPM but higher CS than before while also fighting more, and that's because players are MUCH more efficient at it, not because the patch forces you to brawl. If the patch was the same, the meta would be completely different.
@@idc731 LOL a community of scrubs who had to voluntarily put themselves in a smaller pool of players because they can't hack ranked matches any more, if they ever could 🤣
And if you miss jungling as a set role, where some moron would disappear into the woods and not come out until your team was already losing or winning without them, then you were probably the one who was forcing games into 5v4 situations like that.
@@CharroArgentino I mean there was hidden mmr even before mmr. There were lobbies where carries were expected to rarely miss last hits, same with mids, offlanes were expected to not feed. Also the games often times weren't snail paced there was plenty of 1 kill/min or higher. It's really impossible to say what the end state (if there is one even) would ever be for any given patch. Games with zero patches (like ssbm) are still having meta developments >20 years later. Could have brawls, could be extremely passive.
I really miss a lot of what the game was back then, the slower pace gave more room for strategy, as well as the lack of new mechanics that while flashy, are mostly obnoxious (things like 3/4s doppleganger cooldown, or void just timewalking back with his new shard). Fights played out differently and I miss that style of game a lot. The additional mechanics that keep getting added to heros kits really ruins the gestalt balance the game had pre 7.00. RIP Also old map is gorgeous in comparision.
Back when Iron Talon first came out, I would jungle legion commander and had great success. Camps would spawn at 30 seconds and you could take the first hard camp before the 1 minute mark, then take the second one and medium camp in time to stack another hard camp, rotate back down to take the hard camp, medium camp, and then take the stacked hard camp. If you learned the proper rotations and played it correctly you could out level your mid and start taking ancients at level 5. You could get your first duel on mid super early and power spike from there. I won a lot of games this way. Even before that, I would jungle Roshan for that minute 6 Roshan snowball and my teammates loved it. I was absolutely heartbroken when they started nerfing jungle. Jungle gets a bad name because a lot of people just didn't know how to do it and would throw.
I used to play techies in pubs at the time, i still remember making a stack of red mines and having my friend disconnect on top of them to bait people at the start of every game. Good times.
For those who remember legion was a guy in dota 1 , btw this is standard game where people fought entire game instead of current meta that is farm farm till you succeed .
seeing that old clock with the sun and moon rotating along with the OLD Zeus model that looked like Mario threw me in for a nostalgia bomb. Good times, Good times.
To be fair bsj did Influence dota a lot. Back then aggro mechanics and controlling the map was never seen in lower MMR games. Then came bsj and other dota educators to explain all these things and i remember all my friends were learning from those. Good times.
Just found this old gem. Could you please do more old replay pubs? I legit was watching one of your new herald reviews and I was like wtf is the gameplay level nowadays. How are these guys herald with good item builds and warding. The average performance creep over a decade has been insane.
So i know Jenkins is making fun of this. But as someone that plays dota for over 15 years, People not understanding dota 2, 8 years back is bullshit. Most of us already played dota for like 5 or more years back then. Cause people from dota 1 finally had a place where they finally felt at home. The meta was vastly different, the jungle creep payment was WAY WAY WAY higher. So getting early Iron Talon wasnt bad But i believe in this patch, they started nerfing jungle slowly already making iron talon more expensive. So instead you start off with the shield to gain some block chance and increases your survivability vastly. You could upgrade that shield in the Agi version i forgot the name that item is been removed for ages now. But this Legion had no clue of its proper rotations. It lost its pull through it lost all the money on the easy camp, It lost one of its valuable regen trying to do a pull through... But back then going jungle frees up a extra single player lane and getting an extra farmed somewhat core out of the game. It wasn't a requirement but it WAS one of the possible options especially in pubs. The meta was VASTLY different then it is now, and thus people started playing differently. this wasn't new either, I have played lots of jungle back in dota 1 too. Because the jungle was so valuable Spectre getting 1st item Radiance as a proper farming item wasn't weird or bad Sacred relic wasn't actually too bad to farm, And the damage boost from that helped you to get the rest of the items rather quickly. And PROS were doing this too back then, so this was definitely not awful because of the amount of gold you get from the jungle camps Also sidenote here: we used to call it Foresting back in dota 1, League changed that to Jungling... Which makes sense cause in dota its been a forest while in league it is a jungle... Btw all this above doesnt mean that the players in that game werent god awfull tho xD
Jungle LC with Iron talon was the most gigachad thing to do. I miss it so much. Same for jungle Naix, BS, WK and Axe. Those were the times Dota was truly fun and enjoyable.
What’s annoying is that I stopped playing in 2014-2015, so this is still recent to me. What separated a decent player from these people at the time, at least in terms of items, was understanding item interactions. Zeus is clearly just buying random items from a guide, but a way to run Zeus around this time would have been some combination of Aghs+Blink+Refresher with a Veil, and some means to get more mana. You’d be able to basically obliterate anyone for ~20-35 mins, and when the other team would hear the blink and the lightning crackling, it’d get to the point they’d basically run away and you could try to end before you completely fall off. Even if the game went to 40+ mins you could try and finish people off and take on a more supportive role. The problem is that the in game guides were often written in like 2011 or earlier and based on the WC3 or early DotA 2 meta, so people would buy items without knowing why. In 2013-14, bounty hunters were stacking battle fury without really knowing why, and everyone was buying vanguards until like 2016 even when they sucked. It was a super frustrating period, hopefully that’s been ironed out in recent patches.
This is, I think the time when You pick Sven, get points to his attributes and Cleave only, farm from min 1 to 12,and get a 100 CS or more, then 20 mins later you almost full all your slots,Dagger,AS,Daeda,BkB,Satanic, Treads or Travel at mins 40 onwards, the good old days indeed
Omg I started playing in 2014 and played for about a year and a half before quitting, and I remember shit like this happening all the time. Great times.
i really wish dota 2 still looked like the source 1 client but played like it is today. i prefer how the game used to look but the gameplay is sooooo much better than it was a couple years ago.
the thing about zeus aghanim early game was cuz if i remember corectly, the Atr multiplier stat was not even more than 2.5K hp without taras for all heoes on Agi and Int heroes(about 1.5k damage if zeus ult combo near enemies for his passive skill). Can't say that was bad tho since with refresher, enemies gonna have about 30% if no one on the team have Pipe
"Why would people go for an Aghs that's so bad?" There wasn't much spell-amp either so if you wanted some more damage, I guess Aghs was better than nothing or becoming a right clicker?
eh well, sheepstick and other high impact items would just be better but obviously zeus only gets limited utility out of said items... but that's why zeus was a bad hero overall xd but yes, iirc there's much less defense so a little more damage was actually a larger proportion of the average hero's hp. that combined with people farming slower, leveling slower, larger disparities and yeah, a bit more damage meant way more.
Man give us some real nostalgia. Get warcraft 3 mod games up. There was a time in super early versions where you could only pick like lifestealer. Stack bashers, stack life steal. Void with 3 bashers just killing anyone.. Man I thought I was good in those days now this game isn't even nearly the same
Even though I core LC, this brings back so many traumatic emotions... Fucking jungle LC's... Bane of my pubs back in the day. I think that's what convinced me to actually learn the hero so that I could stop having to deal with people playing her jungle all the time.
2 years ago, I found a screenshot I’d taken from my first lc game. I went gloves of haste and no regen into Midas rush hard support. My carry was a troll warlord who went phase into helm into power treads, and we dominated the lane by having him man fight with press the attack. The funny thing is… we had a mid jakiro, and upon finding this screen shot 2 years ago, I laughed at THAT idea, more than anything. Now… mid jakiro is super strong and almost broken. Now… lc support is an idea the pros have been playing with for a few months. It’s strange how perspective changes over the years.
