Australian and New Zealanders sent their lads ANZAC biscuits in WWI. There are recipes for them on the net. They said no eggs because they needed to go overseas. You can still buy a gift tin for ANZAC day...

Meanwhile at sea it was Mutton and vegetable stew which was still the norm in WW2. However the Royal flying corp and later the RAF got real eggs and bacon for breakfast . The class system even survived so called war time austerity. The Ritz would serve you fresh best sirloin steak IF you had the money.

Even when I was in the Army from 2007 to 2012, we would find ways of making the MRE rations better. I would mix coco with the coffee so it was at least drinkable, and if you give a couple MREs to ANYONE who's been in the Army for long enough and I PROMISE you he will be able to do something with it that will surprise you. Just make sure one of them is NOT the 'Vegetarian omelet" one, that one may as well be dog food and isn't fit to eat.....lol.

Whereas the officers would send back for the Fortnum & Mason Trench Hamper. Comes with all the essentials, tea, coffee, foie gras, claret, and a few luxuries like cocaine, heroin, and a syringe kit to while away the evenings whilst sheltering from the inconvenient boche artillery. Just ‘cause you’re going to war doesn’t mean standards have to slip!

I always thought that rations would hold a lot of sweets I can't remember which war but I was told that they wanted everyone awake and alert for as long as possible and obviously sleep would be a commodity in a trench so sweets would be plentiful at least as I've been told
