In this video I conducted an experiment using real humans. We find out if Will and Steve, who have little to no astronomy experience, could tell the difference between a budget, mid-range and top-end eyepiece in the 25mm widefield range.
At the end of the episode you'll find out if I've decided to buy the TeleVue Panoptic that's on loan from a friend of mine.

NB: a TeleVue Dioptrx attachment will not correct for shortsightedness or long-sightedness, only for astigmatism. The eye-relief with a Dioptrx attachment fitted reduces even further.
@k.h.1587
@k.h.1587 10 дней назад
There is no need to correct for near and far sightedness, that is what the focuser of the telescope is for. The dioptrix will correct for your astigmatism and focusing the telescope will do the rest

The 25mm plausssuhl that comes with those scopes is probably the best plossl out there, short of japanese made premium/vintage plossls
@bcrocks3935
@bcrocks3935 8 месяцев назад
one thing to consider with a plossl, is that a good one can have brightness, contrast, and sharpness equal to high end eyepieces at the cost of FOV, which might not matter depending on your target. 25mm down to 15mm plossls are also very easy to view through.
@AstrocandyTV

Yes, good points. I revisited the 25mm plössl last night on the upgraded mirror diagonal and it is very sharp and pleasant in the centre. I'd recommend upgrading the star diagonal early. Worth the money and might give that plössl some extra use.

I had a 27mm Panoptic and I still own a X-Cel LX 25mm. The X-Cel LX shows true star colors while I didn't find that with the Panoptic, although the Pan had a slightly flatter field at the edge. Bang for buck is wonderful with the X-Cel LX line.

Narrow field of view with Plössls? My first eyepieces were Hughens and Kelners of the 1970s with apparent fields that turned viewing into the experience of looking through a narrow copper pipe :-) Was lucky to replace these with TeleVue Plössls, Naglers, Panoptics and Wide Fields, which are all brilliant…

Very entertaining video - well done (great editing and humor). The wide field grows on you quickly - it's almost shocking when you go back to a tiny FOV Plossl. I personally have sold almost all of my Tele Vue's and replaced them with 82 degree Explore Scientifics. Same effect, just much cheaper. I haven't ventured past 82 degrees because the price goes into orbit quickly.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Yet to try ES EPs. Have recently fallen in love with Baader Morpheus series. Not quite the 82 degrees you're at but close. Optical quality is right up there for me. Loving visual!

25mm Plössl isn't really good for anything in standard focal length Dobsons: It's too narrow to fit in wide targets like Andromeda Galaxy+its satellites, Pleiades etc , or workd as good "finder" eyepiece. And it totally lacks magnification for non-wide targets. 30mm/little short 2" wide view eyepiece is what you want for them. GSO made Dobsons are actually far better equipped than brand overhyped Celestons/Orions and SkyWatchers (made by Synta) and come with starter level 2" wide view eyepiece.
@tuunaes
@tuunaes 7 месяцев назад
@@AstrocandyTV Get GSO made Dobson. In UK that's StellaLyra of FirstLightOptics. It comes with £250 worth better accerssories than brand overhyped Celestrons, Orions or SkyWatchers. Though as f/5.9 8" Dobsons aren't as heavily demanding as 10" and larger for how well corrected aberrations of the eyepieces are.
@andymiller2485
@andymiller2485 7 месяцев назад
If you ever go for the horse head, you'll need a smaller fov to keep alnitak outside the fov. It's also useful for many other DSOs.

Great video, thank you. Particularly the advice on upgrading the star diagonal, I also have a 6SE and 3 of the X-cel LX eyepieces. Will look to upgrade the diagonal ASAP. Would you recommend upgrading to 2" or sticking with the 1.25?
@AstrocandyTV
@AstrocandyTV 6 месяцев назад
Hi, thanks for the kind comment. Would recommend you opt for a dielectric 1.25 diagonal rather than the 2" on the C6 as you won't be able to take advantage of the extra girth the 2" offers.

The Eyepieces are far to be perfect. In fact the humain eye is doing a lot to fix the image given from them. Therefore what it is about should be to choose the best eyepiece according the telescope which has also optical defects.

my favorite eyepiece is the televue panoptic 35mm. thats the one I use at star parties for folks who have never looked through a decent, non high end, dobsonian telescope and my SCTs.

Nice work! Can’t find anything you said is wrong. The ExCelLX is a fantastic eyepiece in my Edge 8/Skywatcher 6 classic dob. I bought that along with Astro-Tech sky-guider/Paradigm 12mm. Anyone looking for the best bang for buck I recommend those two. A great starter set. I have a TV 32mm Plossl and TV 13mm Nagler-6 that are fantastic quality lifetime eyepieces I do 90% of my viewing with. Panoptic 24s are rare as hens teeth so I’ll pick one of those up when they send out the next shipments!

Barsta (or short BST) Starguider ED sold also as Agena Starguider ED, Astrotech Paradigm ED, Artesky Super ED, Tecnosky Planetary ED and TS-Optics ED are usually lot better bang for the buck than normally big brand extra in price having Celestron X-Cel LC... Whose price is basically too high for the 60° AFOV, because you can get 82° AFOV UWAs for around 100 $/€.

Are Kellner eyepieces any good?
@AstrocandyTV
@AstrocandyTV 9 месяцев назад
Moderate viewing angles and apparent field of view up to around 50 degrees, well-made ones should be comparable to a decent plössl. Worth bearing in mind that scopes slower than f/6 will be less demanding of the eyepiece. Colour fringing likely to become apparent with scopes faster than f/5 with a Kellner. Personally, I've never looked through one, just did a bit of an internet trawl to answer your question.
@sreeadityabattu3619
@sreeadityabattu3619 9 месяцев назад
Ohh I actually have a Celestron 114 LCM, the 9mm kellner is definitely hard to look through with glasses. Also I was wondering whether it is worth to invest in a dedicated astrophotography camera which are pretty darn expensive or just try pulling it of with an iPhone using nightcap and the Celestron Nex YZ mount for deep sky objects.
@AstrocandyTV
@AstrocandyTV 9 месяцев назад
@@sreeadityabattu3619I love my dedicated astro camera. The capabilities of a TEC-cooled astro cam are well worth the price imo. You can snag an Altair Hypercam 26M for around £1500 new these days. Given that it's the same camera as a ZWO 2600MM but in purple that is an absolute steal.
@tuunaes
@tuunaes 7 месяцев назад
@@sreeadityabattu3619 Per focal length Plössl has equally short, or IIRC tiny bit shorter, eye relief than Kellner making non long focal lengths harder to use. That's because eye relief of all non-modern design eyepieces is always fixed percentage of focal length. Also unfortunately you were frauded/scammed by Celestron and 9mm likely exceeds, or at least badly pushes, resolving power of that telescope's total garbage design and junk quality optics. You recognize that type of scam reflectors from tube being like half the focal length. Real Newtonian has always roughly as long tube as focal length. And even then some of cheaper models, including multiple Celestrons, are scams with spherical mirror, which can't focus light accurately because of spherical aberration. (Google/check Wikipedia for that)

Hi, what you see if you put 2,3mm eyepiece in this telescope?
@wileecoyoti
@wileecoyoti 2 месяца назад
That scope is F10, as most SCTs are. A 2.3mm eyepiece will result in an exit pupil of around 0.2mm, which means it would be very very dim and hard to see anything at all. Typically a good eyepiece match is one that results in an exit pupil between about 1 and 5mm, but certain objects are fine as low as 0.5mm and very dark places the eye can adapt to as much as 7mm (eventually, if you're young). The 25mm they chose for this comes to 2.5mm, which is usually right around where people feel most comfortable.
@tuunaes
@tuunaes 2 месяца назад
Dim blur: Because that results in magnification grossly exceeding aperture's resolving power. Also neither is light collecting power enough to produce much image brightness.
@k.h.1587
@k.h.1587 10 дней назад
@wileecoyoti I think you meant to say exit pupil not eye relief. 1-5mm of eye relief is practically unusable,

People with astigmatism don't have that option. Also if multiple people are observing need to change focus continuously can become hindrance.

I have a set Brandon’s a set of Edmund RKE’s I have few ES 82 fov’s Also a set of TMB planetaries 9mm thru 2.5mm Circle T Japan Ortho’s However something over looked here is the F ratio of the scope you’re looking through. F/5 and F/10 scopes are very different on all eyepiece design. I have several Refractors Old school Crown and Flint design. 6 inch F/15 6 inch F/5 8 inch F/9 4 inch F/13.2 When looking for the faintest I could see like how many of Saturn moons could I see. The Brandons showed stuff the others could not see. The exception was the RKE’s with only 3 lens in them they surprised me time and again. The Brandons just get out of the way. You know it is not the eyepieces holding things back I have a huge amount of Visual observing. Telvue eyepiece’s are very good. However their Plossls could come close to the Brandons on the F/15 and F/9 scopes. Even the RKE’s showed fainter stars. So unless you looking for huge FOV. Check out the Brandons. RKE’s are harder to come by and have gotten pricey at $110.00 usd.
