Surprisingly many don’t know Oswald has been in the public domain since 1956, probably because Disney has never publicly admitted it. And as much as I’m happy they’re finally giving him attention, here’s to hoping they’ll still do it while following copyright law and accepting that Oswald IS free for the public to use too.
Of course in wanting to discuss this I wanted to do something extra so there’s both a video essay AND a showcase of an FNF mod… which is actually a part 1! So be on the look out for that!

I appreciate how Jake isn’t leaning into the more corporate side of Disney, via making the one holding Oswald back his technical brother Mickey. In a way, they’re suffering from the same thing but from different aspects. Oswald suffering from never getting used, and his copyright preventing him from being used, and Mickey being overused to the point where people literally make him some evil tyrant. (It was funny at first guys, the joke is old, stale, and repetitive now.)

Really does suck that disney is trying to hard to restrict anyone from using the guy despite not doing anything with him in decades. I honestly find Public Ozwald’s design to be really cute. It’s also nice to know the current copyright and trademark restrictions on Oswald. It also makes me feel better knowing some cartoon rabbit ocs I’ve made likely won’t get me in copyright trouble. Song at the end was really nice and was a creative idea!

This video made me realize how empowering a public domain can be. Now I want Felix the Cat to be public so I can make something big. I already had a dream pilot in mind. And who ever owns him now DEFINITELY ain’t doing anything with him. Oswald? Felix? Give us the option to make something ourselves then! Also. I love your “public” design of Oswald! Perhaps a silly question. Is it meant to be “public public”, as in anyone can use this grade A+ design? I don’t post my animations, but I’d theoretically give you credit and help spread the word. Edit: Felix is public domain, thanks for the information, albeit trademarked. So maybe I’ll do something with my pilot script draft one day. Kinda working on my own original show though :)

Oswald is seriously the most underused fictional character of all time. Like, Disney fought tooth and nail to get ownership of him back only to put him in two video games, make merchandise of him, and then put him back into the Disney vault next to Song of the South. Why?

the first few cartoons that Oswald starred are in the public domain, but Oswald as a character is still trademark-able and is in fact trademarked by Disney. but you can kinda get around it by just referring to him as "Oswald" rather than "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit" and also use the interpretations from the aforementioned public domain cartoons

The Oswald looks like what appears to be to Original Disney Oswald since it had the round ears and fingers but I’m guessing that it’s gonna have something to do with being corrupted. @@sketch-eee4165nah. Its S.T.A.T.I.C the thing basicly responseable for Jake's pibby songs. The S.T.A.T.I.C was a machine to automate animations you're right about that. But it used the mind of a "host" and promts from said hosts to create entirely new episodes in only a few seconds i believe. This is most likely leading up to the next (and if things havent changed FINAL) pibby song.

I’ve always had a deep love towards Oswald, ever since playing Epic Mickey 2 the Power of Two, I feel like I could always resonate with him in the sense of being forgotten. He was sarcastic, funny, smart, and absolutely adorable. I’d always play as him and my older sister would always be Mickey. Hopefully one day he’ll be able to shine, his story is so tragic ☹️

When Hugh Harmon and Rudolf Ising decided to leave Universal in 1929, they decided to ensure that they owned any characters they'd create for others. So when they had a falling out with Leon Schlesinger in 1933, they took Bosko and Honey with them. There he starred in cartoons made by the duo's studio for MGM until they went over budget, and was replaced by a studio run by Fred Quimby in 1937. Harmon and Ising joined Quimby's studio, but they didn't bring Bosko with them. Likewise, Ubbe Iwerks made no attempt to preserve Flip the Frog and Willie Whopper after his studio folded in 1936. Warner Brothers tossed aside Beans the Cat in favor of Porky Pig. Even Betty Boop went unused in new material for over forty-five years. Walter Lantz was different. He never truly forgot Oswald. Even when the last cartoon starring him was released in 1943, Lantz ensured that he'd have a life in comics for over two decades. Even when that ended in 1963, Lantz kept using him in merchandising and publicity images alongside his own characters until his death in 1994. As marginal as it was and as little he resembled his original Iwerks design, surely it's better than not using him at all? I find that commendable, dare I say, magnanimous.

fun fact! in honor of the 100 year of disney, they started making "otlr" ears and a bunnnch of merch with the entire trademark they have and using all the cartoon *except* ozwalds. the merch even points out his tall ears and tried even harder to make otlr belong to them. they even made an animation on disney animation youtube channel making it look like the first style! Its been a few years since this vid so idk if they were somehow able to get ozwald but i really hope they havent. also just the irony of the trademark/copyright queens disney having their first character as f2u....

Surprisingly, I have a similar Oswald design to yours, however the only difference is that I went for a more FNaTI type direction. What do you mean by that you may ask? Well, I removed his arms ( mostly, his "arms" now are just fluffy little stubs), made him a bit more chubbier, I made him really fluffy, like REALLLLLY fluffy, and I kind of melted his eyes a bit to make it look like he were crying, even though most of the time he's not. But still, I think you Oswald design is great, and I really hope he becomes public domain soon.

Fun fact: About public domain theme. 1. Felix the Cat It was created in 1919 and this 2019 it's public domain. 2. Winnie the pooh it was created in 1920 and this 2022 it's public domain. 3. Oswald the lucky rabbit was created in 1921 and this 2023 it's public domain. (To take into account oswald was created 1 year before Mickey mouse) 4. Mickey mouse was created in 1922 and this 2024 it's public domain. (To take into account Mickey Mouse was created 1 year after Oswald)

Hey guy, I know I don't usually do actual comments to actual videos, but I really felt like saying this. I like this video, and I especially like the whole expressions you done for your interpretation of Oswald and other stuff in the video. :) I like it. :) And the short cartoony short thing there was pretty interesting I guess. More like an FNF mod clone to be honest with you. And for my thoughts of something of this is about the same way of how I feel about Sonic Origins right now. Just pretty alright. :) Most likely because of it being played to death and stuff, and the novelty wearing a bit thin, but it doesn't take away from the stuff you did in the video was pretty good. :) But I have to mention how great your design of your take on Oswald is, because it is just something I couldn't just not talk about. :) With the pointy ears and stuff, real good stuff. :) I'm thinking of doing something like that for alternative takes on my characters and stuff sometime, because I just like the look. :) You nailed the expressions in this one. :) Very great work indeed. :) I'm not sure about if Disney might take legal action about the future work on this though. They seem like the guys that might do such things, like Star Wars for example. They be bullcrap with that stuff though. :) So, I do have my fair share of scepticism with this. Maybe it might or might not happen, but :P what do I know? :) Just saying, great video, and keep up the work you and the team are doing. :) Otherwise, that's it, unless if I had to say that I liked the thumbnail itself hehe. :) I would say that I wanted to support your stuff, but unfortunately I'm not like any adult with a budget, and just a dude that draws, so I dunno. :/ But I will check out the stuff you guys bring, because it looks pretty promising enough. :) But that's it for what I gotta say, bye bye! :)
