Oh, the irony of the British man at the 3:20 mark saying "...taking a country away from native peoples". At its height, the British empire was the largest in world history. It covered around 25% of the world's land surface. Large areas of North America, Australia, Africa, and Asia were all part of the British empire at one time or other. And who do you think colonized North America? Britain, France, Spain, and the Netherlands all established colonies in North America. In the year of 1919, the following modern day countries were a part of the British Empire: Afghanistan Antigua and Barbuda The Bahamas Bahrain Barbados Belize Botswana Brunei Canada (Only the province of Newfoundland and Labrador) Cyprus Dominica Egypt Fiji The Gambia Ghana Grenada India Iraq Jamaica Jordan Kenya Kiribati Kuwait Lesotho Malawi Malaysia Maldives Malta Mauritius Myanmar Nauru New Zealand Nigeria Oman Pakistan Qatar St Lucia Saint Kitts and Nevis St Vincent and the Grenadines Seychelles Sierra Leone Solomon Islands South Africa Sri Lanka Sudan Swaziland Tanzania Tonga Trinidad and Tobago Tuvalu Uganda United Arab Emirates Vanuatu Yemen Zambia Zimbabwe

I do think that Brits, and all Europeans, are too quick to elide over their historical roles in colonialism and imperialism. When you call them on this, they tend to get indignant. I lived in Europe for years when I was in the military and I didn't pay attention to politics then. After I came home in 2017 it dawned on me, "Ohhhhh... the bulk of those people over there get their perception of our politics and what have you through mostly corporate fake news." Once I made that connection it made a lot more sense how average people over there could miss the mark so much as to whats going on over here. America is such a large country that It has the space for their to be cultural differences Added to this you have certain regions where people migrating into America prefer to consolidate as there are already established familiar resources there for them. This creates the adoption of certain lifestyles, religious and lingual preferences gaining predominace in certain areas. I think most people considering migrating to another country would target areas where there are already people of their own culture there. This is perfectly understandable for many reasons. I did happen to know the great lakes are the largest mass of fresh water on the planet. Excluding the continents covered in ice that is.

I feel like I need to come in here and just say that during my time living in the UK for a couple of years as an ex-pat, I most definitely felt racism there more than I do here in the US. Sure, when there is racism in America, it’s loud and in-your-face but I find that it happens only occasionally. (Though, I’ve never personally encountered it here in California.) In the UK, the racism/classism is more subtle and very hush-hush but, in my opinion, more prevalent and omnipresent. Especially, outside of London. I find it humorous how that one guy can lay the blame of taking away land from the natives on Americans when technically the colonists were still technically English at the time. Also, a PSA to the English: Stop going to Florida as your first visit to the US. It’s not really our best foot forward.

I hate that some people act like slavery is exclusively an American thing. It's obviously an awful thing but saying slavery should be kind of held against America as a country is ridiculous. Same with taking over the land from native Americans. Literally every country was created by killing the native inhabitants and so many countries used slavery for a very long time.
@alasarcher400
@alasarcher400 3 года назад
I believe USA is only Western country exclusively built up from scratch by slave labor. Almost all famous buildings were built by slaves: White house, Harvard university, Capitol, Wall street, Smithsonian, Faneuil Hall and almost all houses of founding fathers. So when people go to see all those famous historical buildings, they are looking at things built by slaves. Thats why its impossible to separate USA history from slavery, because slavery had most impact on building and expansion of USA. Western expansion was basically paid by revenue gained by cotton export which was worked mostly by slaves, Texas was annexed because more land for needed for slaves to work. And no, not every country was created by killing the native inhabitants. There were times where countries were "annexed" by other countries, but examples where most of population of certain land was killed off and lands taken are rare and never happened on such massive scale like in North America.

After revolutionary war ended, USA was just a small piece of land size of Afghanistan. Slaves also not only financed, but physically built almost everything: plantation, government buildings, roads,railroads, bridges, homes for people. Slaves quarried stone, metal, lumbered, worked on ships loading and unloading.

The Slavery Abolition Law would finally be enacted, after years of campaigning, suffering and injustice. This act was a crucial step in a much wider and ongoing process designed to bring an end to the slave trade. Only a few decades previously, in 1807 another act had been passed which had made it illegal to purchase slaves directly from the African continent. Nevertheless, the practice of slavery remained widespread and legal in the British Caribbean.

It's got some of the oldest (colonialist albeit....yikes) culture and architecture. Everyone over 40 has some mix of boston and canadian accents yet nobody under 40 does. And....and....we're as far away from California as we can be. And there's no town too small to have a gift store somewhere.

Hi Adam. Yes New England is very similar in climate and scenery to some parts of the UK and Europe - we are on the same latitude of course. It is also the first part of America that the Europeans migrated too and a lot of those were British in that area, so many of the town names have UK heritage and to a lesser part the architecture and lifestyles.

There is one question that as an Englishman I would love to have some answers from Americans. It is this......Why when there was the rioting and invasion of the Whitehouse on Jan 6th did the police and security not open fire on the rioters ? The police seem to need little provocation to shoot people when there are riots in cities and towns - especially coloured people. Yet when there is an angy and in some cases armed mob storming the most sacred of your institutions who were physically attacking the security staff there was not a blood bath ? It seemed like the security staff and police had been ordered not to use firearms ? That is the way it looked. Only when the rioters got close to the congress where firearms drawn and used. There are unaswered questions here.
@simoneaddo644
@simoneaddo644 2 года назад
As an American it’s quite normal. Police was originally created to catch slaves so like it’s rooted in racism. So they kinda treat black ppl different to white people. The rioters who stormed the capitol in Washington were armed but they were calmly subdued without tear gas or rubber bullets but the Black Lives Matter protesters were shot and branded as thugs. Its interesting that ppl from other countries see these differences. Growing up here I experienced it
@kellyfaunce717
@kellyfaunce717 2 года назад
This was asked during testimony in Congress. The short answer is that the Capitol Police did not get any support from the White House that day and were outnumbered and outgunned by the mob, and opening fire on the crowd would have led to a firefight they knew they couldn't win. So they opted to evacuate the chambers and try to hold the line.

Its an ongoing debate here in America but the long and short of it is either A) They were on the side of the attackers, which is entirely possible given how police are viewed as saviors by the political party of the attackers, or B) they didn't expect a what started as a normal protest to evolve into what essentially became a coup d'état

It doesn’t sound like much but if I was to take two chickens and drop one in a septic tank for an hour and then wash it with chlorine, they’re going to look the same but you’re going to want to know which one was which, right? The reason why it’s important is that chlorine washed chicken is likely to be included in a trade deal with the US. P.S I hate it when people say all lives matter. Such an ignorant thing to say. The point BLM is making is that they’re the ones being disproportionately killed by police. Hi, I am English and enjoyed watching this. I have never been to America but I have been watching CNN, Fox and MSNBC news over the last few years as I was absolutely fascinated with the election. It taught me a lot about American politics and the American mentality. What it has taught me is that although America may seem very similar to the UK and Europe in terms of the people and lifestyles, it is in fact very different. America seems to have an obsession with it's past 'pioneer' principles which are now outdated and I think are preventing it politically and socially moving forward. America and the UK have both heavily been involved in slavery and yet I think Britain has certainly advanced further in terms of racist attitudes. We still have low level racism in the UK but that is usually on more of an individual basis rather than blanket opinions and attitudes (excluding the far right of course). The gun issue just defies beleif and although I have tried I cannot get close to understanding why a good proportion of Americans feel they should continue the right to own guns and rifles. Europe and the UK has very tight regulation on the ownership of firearms, and if you have not got a gun you cannot shoot someone ! This once again harks back to the 'pioneering' history of America which is relatively a recent history. So guns were very much part of that as they needed them to kill the buffaloes and indigenous people (as well as each other ). That attitude does not seem to have gone away. The other big thing is that for some reason America has not adopted a national health policy and people either have to pay for healthcare or take out insurance. In all European countries and the UK there is free health care in one form or another. So that the poorest people can get health care to a good standard should they need it. America for some reason has chosen not to do that and I think this is one of the big difference tht separate our cultures. As for the realtionship between the American people and its police force, well that is just unbelievable to people in the UK. Ok, we do not generally have a fantastic relationship with the police as they are changing and there has been apalling behaviour by some police and corruption. But generally you are not going to get shot for a traffic violation in the UK. Enough said on this topic !!

Why exactly are our domestic affairs your concern? You watch some news clips and arrogantly think you've got it all figured out? It's pretty funny. Should we also discuss the English class system? How you still pay for royalty? How your NHS isn't all it's cracked up to be and you have people waiting for 4, 5, 6 months for things that here in the USA, would be considered a medical emergency? Did you know that poor people here have free medical? Pioneering history? Is that why you think we have the right to bear arms? And you're English and saying that? oh boy

Chris, you REALLY need to not be watching the major networks for your news, as you have a very skewed view of crime and culture in America. Racism--there are individual examples as you admit to for the UK as well, but our country is probably the most welcoming to all cultures and ethnicities in the world. Why else are so many clambering to get in? Do you know how many unarmed black people were shot in 2017? Nineteen. Out of a population of 330 million. I bet you thought it was more, didn't you? In 2018--25 unarmed, in 2019--13 unarmed. So, no, you're not going to get shot for a traffic violation if you're black in the US unless you pull out a gun on the police officer. The stats just don't line up with that narrative. Healthcare---the US tax payer pays for most of the defense of Europe, so that is where our healthcare dollars go to. You're welcome. 2nd Amendment- I want my daughter to be able to have a way to defend herself if attacked in the large city she lives in. I want my single mom friend to have the ability to defend herself from her estranged husband who is stalking her. She lives over an hour from the nearest police. You better believe he's staying away from her now because he know she is packing. It's not an antiquated idea to have the mechanism to defend oneself. Actually, quite the opposite.

A really fun video and I loved it...except for the part where the man made me cringe by conflating "I'm in no way a racist but...", "that Black Lives Matter ****...", "ALL lives matter" and "that gang culture" as the only things he doesn't like about USA and also, in turn, about his own country. It was seriously disappointing to see how misunderstood and demonized Black people in the US are by some people all the way across the pond even. I hope one day everyone will understand that the only reason some Black people in the US felt it had to be said that Black Lives Matter is that there were a lot of indications that a lots of people didn't (and still don't sometimes) agree to that statement...it was never meant as a declaration of supremacy or as an insinuation that all people don't in fact matter. But maybe a better, more concise proclaimation would have been Black Lives Matter TOO to avoid all the global confusion about the protest...? All that being said, it was comforting to see so many more other English people being far more progressive and thoughtful in their opinions and observations about the US than that one guy...it is reassuring to see ignorance is still at a minority the world over no matter how many people unfortunately suffer from the disease. Great video!

@@ejlayne6543 basically what you just did was make a generalized statement based on your own speculation. Please, if you care to debate, as it would seem the workings of my country are somehow dear to you, by all means enlighten me as to the things you feel are somewhat in need of correction. Furthermore, there are a great deal of people trying to get into this country for it to be such a terrible place.

@@historichomestead the only people trying to get in are from Mexico and places like Brazil that are very bad and ur the only country that’s closest to them. ALSO I would add that the United States has a false narrative that it’s the “land of dreams” and “you can strike gold if you come here”. This is obviously far from the case as USA is one of the worst places to live for working class people. So don’t think America is absolutely flawless just because people from third world countries want to come.
@historichomestead
@historichomestead 2 года назад
@@ejlayne6543 your reply has demonstrated your narrow learning on how America is. People from all over the world come to the United States. Even large amounts from other modern, industrialized nations. I hate to use "emotional" evidence however, I have seen first hand how people from those so called "third world countries" have achieved the "american dream". In America nothing is handed to you. If you do not have the will or dedication to pursue what you desire no one is just going to give you a participation ribbon. I have seen homeless people go to Harvard. I have seen an aluminum caster from India become a doctor. On the other side of the spectrum I have seen almost every leading corporation that is head quartered around the world open locations in the US. You are obviously not from the US so all of your knowledge is derived from second or third hand sources. I live here. And for you to say all of America is one way when we are a union of 50 countries. That is why each state has the power to create it's own laws with it's own constitution etc. New York is widely different than Wyoming. Texas shares little in common with Washington state. But our shared union is what holds us together. And if you do not like how the laws or government or people or culture is in one state you have the freedom to move to another. Your position is based entirely off speculation and media observation that is largely propaganda of one political side or the other. I would advise you in the future if you desire to form a stronger rebuttal actually know about the subject you are debating and make concise arguments not vague statements based on second or third hand knowledge. Furthermore, I am one such working class person. I do quite well for myself. I make $33,000 a year. I live by myself. My house is completely paid off as is my car and I have money left over to save. It has nothing to do with what "class" you belong to. It has to do with your choices. If you treat America like a welfare state of course you wont be able to get by. That's largely people that do not work and get food and utility assistance from their government. In America if you work hard you can have the American dream.

Of course there are good and bad no matter where we go. We all have our differences. It’s what makes us all who we are. I would truly like to see the UK.

"I want to sit in a yellow taxi in New York.". Okay, here's what you do: you get a full cat litter box, put it in the bathroom and then sit in it. Then, turn the shower on full hot and blast music you hate while someone yells the instructions on how to build an Ikea table through the closed door for one half an hour. That'll be $168.72.

This video is a great example of how people of different countries around the world may believe or have preconceived notions of other countries that are inaccurate or formed from Ignorance. Ignorance meaning a lack of information not in any derogatory meaning.like many Americans probably only think of Britain as bad teeth tea the queen and biscuits but that's inaccurate. Interesting seeing you get opinions from some people that may be labeled as torries . It's funny because the same takes some of these people had that I view as bad are the same takes I see Americans having.

As an American I hope no foreigner ever visits San Francisco or an American city with severe problems with homelessness or streets covered in human feces. My advice to foreigners would be to explore small towns just outside of major metro areas. You will get the American vibe you expect, without the chaos and sanitation issues of the big cities.
