Hey Easy German Fans. I am Amir from the video... I just want to get something off of my chest. I have been living in Germany since the beginning of July and I can honestly say from my own experience that the german people are some of the most friendly, kind and intelligent people in the world regardless of we are led to believe in America, and I am sure that the German's, once they meet an American, feel the exact same way about us. So take this video with a grain of salt. Maybe we were on the wrong street wrong time? Maybe it was a stupid question to ask or a hard question to answer on the spot? And to be fair, a lot of the negative things said in the video are hard to argue against as an American... So once again I'm sorry that this video feeds into the stereotypes of Germans being cold because it simply just isn't true. I love this country and its people. Remember, Easy German is a language learning tool, so have fun watching while simultaneously learning :)

Herablassend. Und sie waren allerdings sehr oberflächlich, Geld steht im Zentrum von allem. this is true Alexander. Initially I felt similar to Kara, having German ancestors. Even though some people in this video could be perceived as rude, or just honest the truth is our government does meddle is everything and everywhere. also Amir did not exactly answer the host (I think the host) at the end very honestly. No one said fat that I recall. one person said they have fat, skinny, smart, stupid, its a very big place. there were also quite a bit of positive and even neutral answers. interesting video though, I will return to this channel. good job "Easy German"

Chris Klemm Also, these interviews have been conducted in Berlin, by the looks of it Kreuzberg or Prenzlauer Berg. Those are very left-wing places. Not much love for America there. especially amongst the youth. A bit like if you would ask about the Vietnam war in Berkeley - San Francisco? Sure, people like lots of the American culture...but there is a critical view on American politics post-WW2. In Bavaria, Munich for example, my guess is, opinions would be more positive. Also because there is a presence of Americans due to the American bases.

by the way, maybe its cliché, but the Berliners are known for their "unfriendlyness" and being very directly in speech. I don't get it - do they honestly think we just eat hamburgers and fries? I live in a little village in Germany that had its first McDonalds open recently. To my horror, it had the largest profitting opening day of any McDonalds in Germany as a nation. I'm almost sick to think of it, that so many of my neighbors lined up to have McDonalds food. Like you said, Germans have no idea about the diversity of restaurant cuisines we have to pick from in America. How many Germans know where the closest Ethiopian restaurant is to them, as an example. Ethiopia is way, way closer to Germany than America, but where am I supposed to find Ethiopian food here. (African, yes, but Ethiopian?)

@@LythaWausW McDonald's is the bottom of the barrel if you are looking for a burger and fries. Germany should boycott all those fast food restaurants and let them die slowly. There wasn't a single thing about this video I found shocking, impolite, mean or absurd. Everyone gave their opinion and everyone was respectful. To be honest, most of the things they said was actually good, but I think americans aren't used to it. Since americans are most times the world's greatest consumers of whatever a country produces, people often feel a gratitude towards americans and it will be rare to see anyone mistreating an american. I'm not saying americans think too highly of themselves, what I want to say is: they're not used to criticism. They just don't see people talking bad things about their country everyday so it might be shocking. Again, i'm not saying anything bad about America or americans, in fact, I like US a lot and felt really well received when I went there! :)

I feel like it is very closed minded and a little racist for Germans to act this way. It is hurtful to see a country that I am so interested in have so much hatred against mine. I find this very contradicting though since most of Germany is very influenced by American culture and they all want to visit the states for example California, New York or Florida. Very true, indeed. The negative vibe is unfortunate and actually self defeating. The ignorant stereotypicality pervading some of their thinking is profound and blind. So many of the people gave answers that were so abjectly false or overly generalized it was fundamentally lacking in objective reason. But, I was refreshed to listen to clear-headed answers that provided an objective response. For someone to assert, however, that they cannot think of a single thing that could be good of a country that has over 320 million people and vast diversity across many states and geography, some of which are larger than Germany, is the height of ignorance. But that is just the thing...the probability is extremely high that if they would come and, for instance, do something like spend time with a family here and detach from the silly views learned from mainstream media, it would be nigh impossible for them to actually maintain their negative perspective for long, if they were honest.
@dkim2011
@dkim2011 Год назад
@@Ardent-_-Jitsu Some of this is sheer envy. For example, the Berlin respondents have nothing negative to say about Canadians, yet I don't believe Canadians (who I often can't detect as such) eschew "oberflächliche Gespräche" any more than Americans do. Secondly, Germans, and I include my own German family here, strike me as kind of "autistic" in the sense of taking things too literally & struggling with (multicultural) social meanings that are NOT meant to be taken that way. Someone should remind them that "how are you" & other such greetings are not meant to be taken too seriously in many other cultures as well. (Though I doubt Berliners will call Japanese & Vietnamese "superficial" people.) Additionally, in extremely polite cultures, often the point is NOT to be clear. Of course, Berlin is not Bavaria -- that is, some of this extremely negativity is ideological as well. Anyway, I must say that this episode makes me less likely to visit Berlin.

Was findest du an der US-amerikanischen Kultur toll?

I did not find the video to be upsetting at all. Much of what many Germans think of America is a result of our television and news, not to mention a number of other media outlets...magazines, newspapers, etc. While the video does make some great points, I don't feel that the overall attitude was negative at all. If anything, it was more like 50/50. Also, I think we can all agree that our governments on both sides could do better, but again, a lot comes from the media. I'll apologize in advance if my Deutsch war nicht sehr gut, aber ich bin einen Anfänger. Thanks for the great videos, as they help with my comprehension and learning!

I’m a German-American and I’m proud of my heritage. That’s the reason why I’m here trying to learn the language of my grandmother. Deutschland has produced many of the greatest thinkers of all time in both the arts and the sciences. Deutschland has played a major role in pushing humanity forward. You, Germans, have a right as much as any country to be proud of your culture. Furthermore, I have visited Deutschland, and I have lived and worked with members of the German Air Force. They were all so amiable and treated me like I was part of their own family. In the United States we must admit that we are often unsatisfied with our government’s decisions and we do have a major problem with obesity. However, I hope that Germans, Americans and all people will learn to challenge their prejudices. Both, Deutschland and the United States have drastically pushed Western Civilization forward and although we both have made our mistakes in the past in international relations, I believe that our two nations have and will continue to make the world a better place. 🇩🇪🇺🇸

To Americans, these idea may seem innocent, to Germans, they don't.

I think we can be proud if we make sure not to forget our dark past. and we should be proud. Yes, it is a coincidence that we were born in this country, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't be happy about it. i don't want to exaggerate but i think if ww1 and ww2 wouldnt happened, germany would be today's america based on what our ancestors had done before 1914.

I think some People from USA need not to overract to it, they just have their opinions. I am a young Chinese from mainland China and there are more people in the world who don't like Chinese, because they think Chinese are usually uncultivated, or they live in a socialist country or because of some other rumors, prejudices or simply cultural differences. Indeed, some of them are true or partly true due to the behaviors of some Chinese in the past. Many friends of mine, including me, think such a situation can only be changed by the young generation of Chinese ---- we need to work harder, be nice to others and cooperate with others to earn the true respect through our behaviors, but not with money or wars. It will take many years but it is the only right way. I'm surprised - when I was in Germany, I got the impression that none of the Germans would be badmouthing my country to my face. Usually when they talked to me about my home, they focused on the positives - generally they appreciated the nature (which, I admit, one person mentioned), the social mobility, the relaxed-ness, and the Hollywood appeal from American media. Only when I got more familiar with people did they bring out the worse perceptions: the gun violence, the alleged "stupidity", the imperialist war-mongering, etc, but by then I knew them well enough to not take it personally. The moderator must have run into some pretty salty Germans in Berlin.

One day my German sister-in-law saw me bring it out and said, with no hesitation, "Are we having a flag burning party today?" Seriously, she said that. German honesty. Her first reaction was pure hatred of my country. I don't know any Americans back home who would see someone holding another nation's flag and say, "Are we burning it?" Hi Cari/EasyLanguages, I've seen both of your What Germans think of Americans/USA and I have a favor to ask. Next time when they start answering with the typical stereotypes, can there be the follow up question, "Have you ever been to America? And if not, what are you basing your opinion of Americans on?" I see so many of these videos from other sites and no one ever asks what they're basing these opinions on which tends to be media or hearsay (of course there's a difference between the people & the government). People are the same in every country and I'm always baffled when I see others who don't know us act the same way they accuse us of. Having said that, I went to Germany (Berlin) for the first time this past December and had a great time. Everyone was very kind form policemen to strangers that I would ask for directions or anything else. Can't wait to go back and visit other areas.
@fremejoker
@fremejoker 8 лет назад
+Jmo There shouldn't be a next time. There was a period of time when I often watched such videos "What do you think about Germany?" or something similar. It gets really fast pretty boring. Because there will be always some stereotypes. So, once it is nice to hear good things and you'll get upset about wrong things, but after a while it's just the same. Anyway, one point that you made, I have to disagree. You didn't have to be in another country to have an opinion about that country. You know it by yourself and it's only an argument from you to invalidate the other opinions. That's reasonable, but you are changing not any single opinion with this argument. It's the easiest way to win an argument when you try to invalidate opinions. But again, you don't change any opinion while doing it. I can even use your way to invalidate your argument. One single trip, even two do not give you the insight about how Germany is, neither would it, if I would visit the USA. To get a differentiated comprehensively educated opinion about a country, you have to live there for quite a while. Maybe you'll see this way doesn't work as you might wish. So, what's the conclusion? First, people have opinions, accept it. Second, there are many opinions, some are good, some are bad, some are exaggerated, some are differentiated comprehensively educated. If you don't like an opinion. That's ok. You are on the internet, click thumbs down, write a comment and try to change other opinion by your view. But don't blame other people for their opinions. Again, it's reasonable, but it doesn't work.

Having lived in both countries, I think in the US you have more freedom to be yourself. In Germany, if you are out of the norm, or do things your own way, it is oftentimes seen as negative. It’s like a “you have to be like this, and there is only one way to do something“ mentality. I don’t know if that has changed now, it’s been many years since I been to Germany, but I always felt like in the US people are more open to different ideas, different ways of thinking, etc

I think its the other way around. In the States i lived for 2 years and I feel that everybody has the same life, just on different financial levels. You go to High School , College and then you get a house in the suburbs of a big city. Everybody has those wood houses- mostly. In Germany you have more people following talents like writing a book, painting or music. In America the most adults concentrate only on family and job. In Germany people speek 2 , sometimes 3 languages, in the US mostly just 1. Germans travel more and are sorrounded by different cultures. Its normal to study or live abroad for a while. Americans very often have no clue of a different cultures or living abroad.

The US-Americans have, as you said, very different and more expanded laws as in Germany. The US-Constitution for example, is in the first place the oldest democracy in the world, but of course there are pros and cons on both sides, secondly that freedom of speech in the USA includes hate speech what in certain european countries like in Germany is hate speech forbidden, because it is against the first paragraph in the German Constitution "Human dignity is inviolable. It is the duty of all state authorities to respect and protect them." Also the USA, correct me if I am wrong, doesn't prohibit that everyone can be recorded/photographed without having expectation of privacy in public (e.g. 1st Amendment Audits on RU-vid) and not so restricted like it's in EU (European Union), what would be against the data protection in the first place (depends on the situation). The UK is one of the countries in Europe (even before exiting the EU, so Brexit) where people "do not need a permit to film or photograph in public places and police have no power to stop them filming or photographing incidents or police personnel." neither, like in the USA. So I think, the laws in the USA are more relaxed than in Germany, (restrictions there and there, if good or not) that makes it for sure, but the obtain of free health care in Germany and many other things we are more further is a good thing to express theirselves better. As I already have written, it depends much more on the laws on the certain country.

I love these videos. All 104 of them. One difference I've noticed between Americans and Germans. Americans tend to have a more independent, "don't tread on me" attitude. Germans tend to be more regimented. Two examples, Germans are great at recycling. And everyone seems to participate. Just about everything that's unusable from their homes goes to the Wertstoffhof. In America recycling is more of a personal thing. Some do and some don't. In Germany working on Sundays is generally prohibited. And their citizens accept this as good for society and the family. Americans would see such a law as a huge infringement on their liberty and it would never pass.
@saraharmstrong5511

Younger Americans would maybe see working on Sunday that way, but I wasn't raised like that. Also, I'm Southern. There's no prohibition against working on Sunday now, but when I was younger (born in 74) everything was closed on Sunday. I liked it better then.

But the technology that we enjoy at our devices/computers is mostly from America. Like you said, the web is nothing without the internet, but where did the internet come from, actually? And the GPS device in your car/phone? In 1959 the US Navy built the GPS system. In 2000 they let the rest of the world use it "for free." @xellossaxon you mean the same Einstein who fled the persecution of his countrymen to the USA? Yeah, that's a hella of an example. This just proves my point. Just another reason to be grateful for. If it wasn't for the USA those great minds would have been found dead in the most humiliating way possible and the world would lag behind in technological process. While Germany did had a great potential at the beginning of the 20th century of becoming the scientifical, technological and cultural center, they pretty much ruined it with their backward political system, similar to what has happened to Russia. But my point was that all major inventions and innovations which influence our MODERN way of life ,as a matter of FACT, are coming from the USA. Just look at the list of the nobel prize winners. You will find hardly a German anymore. With that in mind, saying that there is "nothing" Germans can like about the USA is purely ignorant and a result of contempt and not objective judgment.

@xellossaxon Really? Internet, smartphones, tablets, laptops etc. are German inventions? That's new to me. "This is not 100 years ago where the best of the best were awarded the prize." Of course it isn't. It is all just an huge antigerman campaign attempting to annihilate the german influence and culture. And just like that, the world was dropped into the most brutal war in history. "He reveals that he doesn't know much about the scientific community." Well, I am medical student and if there is something I know from my field of expertise with high certainty then that by far most publications in medicine nowadays (and this has been going on for decades) are being done by either North Americans or East Asians, Europe and especially Germany, (compared to 100 years ago) is losing more and more the plot.

Better, if you are traveling to Germany for the first time, that you don't see this video. I can't imagine getting the same percentage of negative comments from Americans regarding Germany. In 1991 I spent six weeks traveling around Germany on a Eurail Pass before seeing other parts of Europe. I have no complaints regarding Germans on my trip though they are on the strict side of following the rules. I've noticed that Europeans, in general, don't smile as much as Americans in the South where I've lived. It's the same here in Bangkok with seemingly unfriendly Europeans. Thais, American, Africans are all friendly but not Europeans or Canadians. Maybe it's the cold weather.

“NO real food culture.” I welcome criticism of the US. I have lots of it myself. But when it’s completely based on an illusion, and has no basis in reality or no understanding of history, it’s annoying. First of all, in terms of fine dining, the US is a world leader. And despite having less Michelin stars, the US isn’t even eligible for stars as a whole, only in a few cities, and that’s recent. But along with France, Italy, Japan, London, the US is a fine dining juggernaut so the idea that there isn’t much “nice restaurants” like that girl suggested is odd. But the US regional cuisine is immense and varied and really interesting. It’s not just fast food. In my experience traveling Europe, no one was more prejudiced and nasty towards Americans than the Germans. But I still always enjoy my time there. Interesting to see them be so hostile towards their culture and people but consume American culture and language on a daily basis.

To the Americans watching this video: I have been thinking about this for a while now since this video upset me, too. I believe that when we go to Germany, we, as Americans, should buck against the stereotypes. It is said that Americans are loud and they stomp everywhere. I'm not sure why we do that, but when you go to Germany, talk softer and don't stomp. I have heard many times that people appreciate someone who is trying to learn their language. So try to use Deutsch as much as possible! Since watching this video, I have been telling myself, "It's not me personally they hate. They hate our government--and who doesn't?!" And when you go to Germany, try to dress as they do--don't dress like a slob. And don't have an air of superiority because you are American--Germans are way ahead of us in many ways, such as their food purity law (makes me jealous) and industry. Also, the people who shoot down Americans are probably old crabs who are stuck in their ways. Their opinions are likely formed by the junk coming out of America that they watch on TV. Not reality! The really good thing about Americans is that we are friendly, even if it is viewed as being superficial. Sorry this was so long...

As an American who has spent much time in Germany, I think it is 2 things. Cari is right. The more leftie they are, the more critical of the USA. But also it is Berlin. I never understood that. It wasn’t that way 30 years ago. But it isn’t that way everywhere. I never get the negative vibe from 1. those who are older, more traditional or 2. those who are politically classically liberal (conservatives by American standards) or at least more right leaning by German standards 3. those from rural areas, particularly in the south. Bavarians love Americans. :-) and 4. those who are religious. Certainly there is a lot of overlap in the groups mentioned, but the point is the people in the video were not fully representative of all Germans. Germans are as varied as Americans. Just like in any other country, people all have their own opinions and much of what that entails is what they see on TV. I will say there is definitely a different mindset between Americans and Germans. When I was younger I backpacked Europe. In Paris, I met a german man who talked about how at a crosswalk no germans would cross the street unless the walk sign is green, even if there is not a car in sight. He ended it with "Ja, that is the German people." Shortly after that I was in Berlin and witnessed this myself. A narrow single-lane road with ten people on each side and not a single vehicle anywhere to be found. Being an American I shrugged and walked across, receiving some not-so-pleasant looks. I could definitely see how our difference in values might create a bit of animosity. Germans like to follow the rules and Americans....Don't. If we don't understand or believe in the purpose of a rule, we tend to break them. This attitude actually gave President Washington some frustration when leading American troops during the revolution - wanting to understand the purpose of an order before following it.

Most opinions are certainly guided by what the media has to show, what is unfortunately based on real international politics and years of cold war/American dream/fear-based isolationist mindsets. I've met many cool Americans in Florida and California - both melting pots. Very nice Southern hospitality in TN too. But from what most of the world hears from the right-wing in states such as Texas and Alabama, one can't blame Germans for having these views. And I love Texan barbecue and Alabama music, just for the record.
