CG and I arrive at our first house sit for 2021. What do housesitters do? House sitting often involves pet and plant care, taking care of the general cleanliness and upkeep of the home, and may also include lawn maintenance, pool maintenance, taking care of the mail, and all manner of tasks depending on the specific house sit and duration of the stay. Find more specific housesitting information on our website slowpoketravel...

A green place, so it’s more than just sitting around. The plant thing could be seriously involved.

@SlowpokeTravel 3 года назад
if the rains let up the plants will definitely need more attention...right now it has rained a bit almost everyday since we've been here, so hopefully it won't get too dry in this part of the country

Hey Buck, was that a mini trampoline on the balcony? I think house sitting in a new area would be a lot of fun. Watch out for the plumbing. The community I am in has a lot of old plumbing and develop leaks and the shut off valves are not working so people leave the apartments empty for months and come down in the winter and the apartment is all moldy and they have to pay damages to the neighbors. It looks nice and cool up in the mountains, you guys are doing the smart thing.
@SlowpokeTravel
@SlowpokeTravel 3 года назад
I thought it was one of those trampoline things too, but it has a pet store logo on it...I think it's so the cat can lay out on the deck and have the air circulate around him? I think it's cooler for the cat or dog if they lay up on it...or at least the pets think so, 'cause that's what they use it for

If you want some backyard entertainment, make a chicken swing, they love it! Find a piece of wood and string it to a tree like a kid’s swing but only a little from the ground so the chickens jump on and they move their bodies to swing, unlike kids who make you push, ha ha. Watch some RU-vid videos on it.
@SlowpokeTravel
@SlowpokeTravel 3 года назад
I'll definitely check out some of those videos--sounds interesting--but I doubt I'll be making the chickens a swing since they're not our chickens--I worry about the chickens enough already without them performing amateur acrobatics on a swing!...if I make the hens anything, it will be tiny safety helmets for them to wear :^)

Looks like a good low stress way to live . I've thought of doing this in Australia .
@SlowpokeTravel
@SlowpokeTravel 3 года назад
the website we use for house sitting, Trusted Housesitters, used to offer lots of potential house sits in the UK and Australia, but I don't know about nowadays...I'm only looking at US house sits at the moment because of potential travel restrictions...I used to be optimistic about potential international travel later in 2021, but I think CG and I have rolled our optimism ahead to 2022

So many things to do and care, housesitting seems like a great responsibility and fun too! Thank you for sharing this info with us, Chef Buck! Have a great weekend!
@SlowpokeTravel
@SlowpokeTravel 3 года назад
it's definitely a big responsibility--pets are integral members of the family for many folks--so the home and pet owners are putting a lot of trust in the house sitters, and CG and I are always very grateful for the opportunity

@@SlowpokeTravel I agree! We have to be caring about other people's pets and make sure that they're healthy, well fed and don't go out of the house! Pets are like family members to their pet parents!

My wife and I had a "professional " house sitter look after our house/pool/ cat,dog/ and prized plants over an Australian Summer. Mid way through my wife came home to get her C Pap machine. The house sitter had people over, not arranged with us.😡 At the end of the trip our stunk of cigarettes plants had died,alot of pet food had not been used at all, my sons multi phone charger was gone and pool tablets had been used resulting in a green hue to our pool. After speaking with the neighbour over the road we found out that the day my wife returned home was one of only 4 days the house sitter was there. Never again.

was your experience through the Trusted Housesitters website? One of the things I like best about the trusted house sitters site is that you can read reviews of both the sitters and the homeowners, so over time users can develop a verifiable "reputation" ...when CG and I are looking to book house sits, we tend to gravitate towards listings with prior reviews, and I think the reviews we've garnered over time have definitely helped us to land house sits.

I'm loving the chickens...the only problem is staying ahead of the eggs. We've only got 3 chickens to care for, but the eggs are piling up faster than we can eat them...CG boiled some up for deviled eggs and I'm furiously making frittatas :^). I've wanted to book a house sit with hens for a while (I think this is the 3rd sit we applied for with chickens, but the first sit we landed). The chicken coop set up here is pretty accommodating...there's a gravity feeder, an automatic coop door on a timer, and a fairly large chicken run...the chickens pretty much take care of themselves with minimal effort on our part.

@@SlowpokeTravel: Sounds like the chicken owners have a stellar set-up for their “pets.” My cousin had chickens and roosters and she swears they love to be held just like dogs do. 🤣 Enjoy your time with all the different critters… sounds like the most perfect house sit of all. And I laughed out loud when I pictured you and CG so earnestly trying to make good use of those eggs. Waste not, want not! 😇😁🌞

Where do you sleep on these house sits? Do the house owners have guest bedrooms, are the mattresses covered/are they in mattress encasements?
@SlowpokeTravel
@SlowpokeTravel 3 года назад
it really varies from house sit to housesit--most often we've stayed in the master bedroom, but sometimes we stay in a guest room--it really depends on the homeowner, but we always know what our accommodations are going to be before arriving to a house sit

we're definitely in a little bubble here...we were at the house sit for a solid week before we ever got in the car and left the property, which I think will be how the rest of the house sit goes. As long as we have groceries, there's no real reason to go far afield, and there's areas adjacent to the property where we can take the dog out for exercise. We didn't know how the covid situation would evolve when we booked this house sit (and I guess we still don't), but we figured a rural house sit would make a better gamble than an urban house sit .

Question: do you get paid? It does sound fun for some locations but also you can't leave for long (to explore the area) for the animals; I'm guessing? What are the top pros & cons?
@SlowpokeTravel
@SlowpokeTravel 3 года назад
no we don't get paid...it's basically an exchange of services. In general, the owners cover their regular costs-- like utilities, pet feeding and care costs--pretty much all the expenses associated with the home and pets--but we cover the costs of our own food and entertainment and the travel to and from the sit. The owners don't have to board their pets or leave their home unattended, and we get free lodging. CG and I are putting a podcast together, and one of the 1st episodes will be about the pros and cons of house sitting from our perspective...I'm currently editing it now, but in a nutshell: THE PROS ARE 1) it can be a great value 2) it's fun and exciting (it really is) 3) you get to experience different locales and styles of living THE CONS ARE 1) there are no guarantees, so it's not like traditional travel booking airbnbs and hotels, there are more moving parts, so there's more potential for complications (i.e. the homeowners have a family emergency and have to cancel the sit) 2) the house sit might not be what you expect, it's a gamble of sorts (like most travel) 3) it's a big responsibility, since many folks consider their pets to be family members
