Schizophrenia, a complex and harrowing illness, presents an ongoing challenge for caregivers. In this groundbreaking book, discover the missing links that empowers you to navigate the labyrinth of decisions and actions required to provide the best care for your loved one.
Nicole Drapeau Gillen is a mother who recognized that caregivers like herself often find themselves thrust into this challenging, complex and stressful situation with little clear guidance on how to help a loved one with a serious mental illness.
Her goal is to create a practical and actionable handbook that offers valuable insights into caring for your loved ones facing this formidable condition. With a 35-year background in the business world as a former IT executive and Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), NIcole now aims to channel her skills into a more meaningful endeavor - supporting fellow caregivers.
She lives in Virginia and loves teaching fitness, taking care of her family and learning how to be a better caregiver.
This book addresses everything from setting up disability support, to legal support (guardianship, conservatorship, or power of attorney), to financial support (Supplemental Security Income, Social Security Disability Insurance), to insurance (Medicaid), to estate planning and trusts. It further provides resources on the role of the government, jails, rehabilitation, housing and homelessness.
What was your motivation for writing this?
3 moms - what are your favorite sections?
Nocole - What's happened since the book has been released?
Is there anything I would have done differently, now that it is released?
What kind of response have I received, and from whom?
What has surprised you most in the responses?
What's next?

I bought this book on release day. I'm still working my way through it. Seems great so far. Another arrow in the quiver. Also taking NAMI Family to Family and attended a webinar with Dr. Amador. Late onset Schizophrenia in my wife emerged at 40. I have listened to almost all of your pod casts over the last 5 months. Thank you so much, to you three moms.

40 years ago, my husband had a break and was diagnosed Paranoid Schizophrenic. We had two children, age 8 and 10. His therapist defined schizophrenia as "What you see in Michael". Learning about the disease and how to cope is the most important thing you need in your journey. Thank you for bring this info to caregivers today.

I am sorry if this has been discussed before but can you talk about the latest promising clinical trials using the ketogenic diet to treat schizophrenia?
@RandyeKaye

We aren’t doctors, but could mention some of the newest research, including that. This isn’t all that new and we personally have had no luck with it but new research is worth a mention.

Thank you so much for responding. It would be even more interesting to hear about your personal experience with the ketogenic diet, then. I just learned about it from the book Brain Energy and of course it sounded like a great alternative to explore. I am following you from Japan, by the way.

Was very excited and hopeful when I found this podcast hoping to gain insight and help for my son. Then I heard u suggest that my hard work and good decision making had something to do with the color of my skin and somehow gave me a privilege that other races do not have I found to be extremely racist and repulsive. I am not aware of any law or constitution that favors me over any other race. It certainly didn’t spare me from this dreadful illness. This is my first podcast. I hope the others don’t reflect those racist views and comments. We are all of the human race. Created equal and I expect that we all be treated that way.

Hi Renee, I’m so sorry we gave that impression and hope you will continue to listen. As a former DEI trainer, I could not agree more that we are all one race, with different ethnicities. Part of my DEI training was to be aware that “white privilege” does exist, so that we can work to see it, acknowledge it, and change it. We try to be aware that there is statistical evidence that this awful illness happens to all, regardless of country, color, or income level…and also that, because of that, others have a different experience. Medical statistics do indicate that schizophrenia can present differently in people of color, and we don’t know why. What we try to do is acknowledge that our experience may not reflect the experience of all, with different family and sociological backgrounds. I’m also painfully aware, as a woman who raised two kids counting every penny because of being abandoned by the father of my kids (no child support), that paying medical fess meant less food on the table, and that the “fancy” facilities that cost thousands of dollars a month were not an option for me. We try to acknowledge that at times, and apologize if it comes off as prejudiced in any way. Thanks for your comment.
