thing was that the socket didnt even reach the spark plug and was just stuck to the surrounding of the hole. got it out now, thanks for everyones help.
You have to be a professional certified dealership mechanic to handle that type of work. You cant just pull out the battery with out knowing the volts and specs
Had a friend that did this with my socket and then called me to get it unstuck. Pretty sure it was on this exact Toyota motor. What I did was pull the valve cover and put a socket inside the spark plug tube that fit very tight in it and put vice grips on the outside and work the entire tube loose by wiggling. Once the entire tube is out you can hammer out the socket. If you mess up the tube too bad you can try the same method on one at a local Pick-n-Pull. Try not to put any tool marks on any sealing surfaces.(spark plug tube seal) and reinstall with a hammer and a wood block.
I never have, just like the guy that leaves an oil plug loose.... trying to say it happens to everyone.... literally been doing this for 15 years and never did that @user-wv4gy3jp4c
Man, he was trying. Guarantee it's the right size socket he just needs a thin wall for that specific motor. He probably just got unlucky with a cheap socket, is my guess also.
Glad you got it out but I would invest in one of the extended spark plug sockets made for the recessed type plugs. Then the socket sticks up out of the hole just a little bit
A good tip when you're doing that again. Wrap each joint with electrical type. That way, when you pull on it, the extension won't come apart from the socket.
Lube it up, JB Weld on a stick, magnet, drill tap long bolt then pry. Try a little heat. PS: I've had that happen many times, and it can be a pain. Lastly remove rocker cover and presto. Good luck!
Take the plug out and remove the sock from the spark plug. Put a dab of dielectric grease inside the socket and try again. If that doesn’t work, take the rubber boot out of the socket completely but be careful not to break the porcelain part of the plug. Hope this helps.
The socket isn't on the plug it didn't make it that far to reach the plug before getting stuck somehow lol. If i was him I'd get some locking extensions next time
I just bought a 09 Corolla. I wanted to check the plugs, so I figured it was a 5/8 spark plug socket. Nope, 1/2 inch drive wouldn’t even fit. I looked it up and I was surprised to see it was a 9/16 spark plug. I’m getting some rubber inserts to put in that socket for sure now lol. I also have locking extensions.
I had two plug sockets of each size. One with and one without the rubber insert. With the rubber insert for remove and without for install. Worked like a champ every time
If you have to use this method You should have used a left hand thread tap because that would loosen the spark plug and then you could pull everything out. The way you did it just tightened your spark plug with an impact which is going to be way too tight now and that can damage things
Oh man I am happy to see that I am not the only one that this has happened to on a Toyota. Man I ended getting it out by getting a locking extension on it using a 90 degree pick to keep it in the unlock position while sliding it down. Used lots and lots of penetrating oil and ratchet it out while pulling it up the same time. Hope for the best, never again with 5/8 on these engines
This is going to sound crazy but get a spray nozzle with a tip make sure that the tip can fit within the socket and inside of that spark plug hole as long as it fits past the socket and you can blow air through the socket into that contained area it will build pressure and the socket should pop out
Prob turn your little tiol into a mint slide hammer, with a socket or something, you need to tap it straight out pulling with the hammer is going to break the tap
Damnnnn i thought the tap was pretty good thinking. Attach a slide hammer to the tool you already built, if that tap is in there good it will yank it out. That sucks man 😭
A lot of times what happens if you're going reverse of the socket rounds around the socket you need to reverse that motion to loosen it up to help get it out. So sometimes adding a little forward motion will help it loosen up and take it out
This may sounds dumb and put your ratchet back in there and back a spark plug out if that's not possible because the top of the spark plug is through the end of the socket did you try a magnet if he managed to get it out put the rubber grommet back inside the spark plug socket so this doesn't happen again and if it's stuck you have to slowly tap on each side of the socket evenly until it becomes free
I always spray the inside of my sockets with PB and keep those spark plug sockets in a warm place before use. If all else fails, get a 7 inch needle nose, pliers, & wrench on them. 07 and spark plugs will also pull the spark plug boots off properly if they separate without having to break the spark plug.
You really didn't describe the problem so is it loose , or is it threaded in? If loose use a shop vacuum and seal the opening with tape or something, to increase the suction. Vacuum it out.
What u wanna do is put that thing you made in the socket and pull on it as someone is turning the motor over by you’re gonna wanna turn it over by hand with a socket and ratchet slowly as you try to pull the socket up out the hole it will relieve some of the pressure
Thats why the special extended socket costs more to be specifically used for recessed plugs. In addition you need to.use a locking extension to guarantee when you pull up Nothing will separate.
It will come out if you wobble it back-and-forth those spark, plug sockets take out that little rubber piece in the middle. You can always use a pen magnet to remove the spark plug at the end.😊
Seen this happen ONE other time. Guy ended up dropping some pieces of dry ice in the hole. Then used a 6” pick with a little hook on the end to hook the plug and yanked it right out
If you can get an extension on it wiggle it backwards and forth just like you're losing it up it looks like you was tightening it up there to get that threader to start so try wiggling it backwards and forwards and the reverse motion
Swivel extensions will sometimes hold enough. Just twist it back and forth by hand while pulling up. Put a dab of motor oil on the rubber ring in the socket before using to help it slide on and off.
You might also try carefully turning the engine over at the crank and see if the Piston will push up the socket. Obviously if you have to use too much force call it quiets. Will probably not work on an engine with a steep angle where the plug enters the chamber. For engines w/plug directly above piston
When you're a parts replacer who buys their tools at Harbor Freight, you deserve every bit of frustration you give yourself. Every good mechanic would have used quality branded tools, (Snap~On, Matco, MAC, SK, etc) and would have either never run into that issue, or would have the common sense to know how to take it out. P.S. Why don't you take the valve cover off, then remove the spark plug tube and the socket will more than likely come out with the tube.
Ive had issues with spark plug sockets being too thick and getting stuck on the tappered walls when tightening plug. Shaved a snap-on one that worked but cracked after awhile. Found some thin-walled spark plug sockets from Matco 14mm. works perfectly. I dont know the orig. Manufaturer. Im sure if u google thin walled spark plug socket something will pop up
I had this happen to me once because the heat shield that goes around the spark plug was bent so when I finally got it out I ground down the socket and kept it in me glovebox
Had that happen to me once in a jiffy lube parking lot and my truck was down for two days before I finally got it out with a long dental pick 😂 What was once an easy plug swap, quickly turned into a nightmare.
Pick or piece of coat hanger wire with a little hook bent in the end. Used one on my first tacoma because they were so far down in the holes. And old lol. Hook into the socket and loop the other end to yank it out
Plumbing pipe expander set. Found everywhere on the net & most local stores.i know it's too late for your situation, but it should work for future situations.
Put a long extension on it. And wiggle it back and forth. And turn it slightly. The opposition way from what you was doing so if you was trying to take them out. Turn it right. Is you was trying to put it in turn it left. Is all else failed. Take rubbing alcohol. And or brake parts cleaner and spray it in the hole. Make sure it’s all dry. 💯 % dry. Mix up some jb weld. And put a thin coat on the sides of the extension. And plug it into the stuck socket. And let it fully dry. 9 to 12 hours later. After all of this process proceed back to step 1. Hope this helps. I know it’s a old video😊
lol this happened to me while changing my spark plugs aswell almost same year car aswell but all I did was grab some crazy glue added it to another socket that will also fit in make them both touch wait 5 mins for the glue to stick and pull it out carefully worked like a charm
You could next time try that key board duster flipped upside down it has like a freezing effect along with your extended tap ... and the hammer to pull up ... I believe the socket is wedged inside the spark plug tube ?
Common problem with those deep wells they make extra long sockets for spark plugs I just welded regular plug socket to a extension works great Now for your deal U will have to try different things U will figure it out 👍
Have you tried a slap hammer? You know the ones that they used to pull dents out of the body on your car. Attach it to that device that you Mand try slapping it out because the claw hammered that you were using. It's a good idea, but you don't have enough leverage. Maybe if you use the slot timer , you might get enough force to pop it out
