I once said to my ex-boyfriend "you know I could be happy eating only Mexican food my whole life" and he said "yeah, there's a whole country that does that"
I absolutely love the ‘My Subscribers Ordered…’ series! So great to get suggestions of new foods that we can try easily! Thanks so much to Beryl and friends for the great content ❤️
Im from Puebla, México, and i never seen beans in pozole , also we don't put avocado in it, but idk if there's other places where they serve it like that ,cause México is so huge and we have so many different foods and versions of it ... But yeah the beans in pozole feel weird to me
My family is from Guerrero and I was aghast when she said there were beans in the pozole! We always only use hominy and the usual condiments are shredded cabbage, radishes, onions, lime and oregano.
@@bernabegeneva and I think Guerrero is where the pozole originated, right?? 🤤 So those are the condiments and sides we use here too. But i saw once this show, they were in a very famous pozole place in Mexico city and they put sardines and an egg on top of it, and everyone sweared by it 🙊🤷♀️
The chanting of “chilies Rellanos!!” Made this video! Lol can’t believe you didn’t shout “Holy Mole” when eating the mole. And tres leches cake is my favorite of all cakes!!! Last year my daughter in law got us one with glacé fruit on top for our birthday celebration(we have bdays 3 days apart). So good!!!
My husband is from Texas (I am from Pennsylvania), and the more I learn about not only Mexican-American fusion, but just true Mexican cuisine by itself, the more I love it. There's such a deep comfort with so many of the foods. There's so many foods that I thought of as Mexican, that really aren't at all, and I've missed out on so many delicious things because I just never encountered them in my life until I got married.
Well those dishes that you thought of are most likely Mexican but not popular in Mexico. For instance, nachos are from Mexico but they’re not popular. They are from Piedras Negras, Coahuila. And they do have nacho celebration festival there. Also, burritos are a northern Mexican thing. They have them in Sonora, Chihuahua and Sinaloa from what I have seen. They also have them throughout Mexico but they go by different names so it gets lost in translation. Chimichangas also come from Sonora but they were called Chivichangas originally.
It’s too bad that all the people who chose your food were from Mexico City, because they wouldn’t recommend the delicious cuisine from other regions like the Mixiote, which I’m almost certain you have never tried, or the huitlacoche, which you already know and it’s a delicacy. Mexican cuisine is so diverse and exquisite that it’s considered a patrimony of the world. I’m glad you’re showing to your subscribers that Mexican food is much more than tacos, nachos and quesadillas.
I agree with Dora a lot, the dishes ARE Mexican (and the recipe was not really butchered) but Mexico is far more than just Mexico City. Mexico City for me is in a good sense a Petri dish, because of all the people from the rest of the country who find themselves there at some point of their lives.
All the dishes are from diferent states in México: the Red Pozole is from Jalisco, the Chile Relleno is from Puebla, & Mole Negro is from Oaxaca. Just the Ensalada de Nopal and the Molletes are from the center of the country, and not exclusively from CDMX because those are commonly eaten also in Estado de México and Morelos. And to close, Tres Leches cake is also popular in other Latin American countries. As for your recommendations, Huitlacoche is most commonly eaten in CDMX and the Zona Metropolitana of the country because the maiz crops, tha same for the Mixiotes that are from Tlaxcala, Puebla, Hidalgo, Queretaro, Estado de México and more. Too bad you didn't investigate before saying that CDMX people don't know other states cuisine.
Mexican food is always right. I am so lucky to live on the west coast where it's plentiful, fresh, and delicious. Thank you for another fantastic episode.
OMG! Yes! As a Mexican I would say you got a lot of our most important & typical dishes, while Mexico has many states with many variations of each of these amazing foods, you did Justice to my culture. Thank you! Definitely try Carlota next time as a desert it is also very common, not overly sweet & has condensed milk 😉♥️
I just looked up "carlota mexican dessert" and I am definitely trying this sometime soon, if I can get my hands on some Marias cookies (or some other type of tea biscuit that isn't overly sweet - any recs?). I love lime desserts!
@@emmabennet888 you can buy those anywhere well I guess depends on where you live because I live here in Southern California so a lot is easy to find lol
@@richiethev4623 I can definitely get them at a store in my area, but I don't think they sell them at the grocery store I normally frequent. Basically just somewhat inconvenient....wait, just found out they DO sell them at the other major grocery store I shop at!
@@emmabennet888 May I ask what state do you live at because maybe depending on the state you can easily find them at a kroger, wal mart and Hispanic/Latin market's because here in California you have your market's like Ralph's, Von's, El Super, North Gate and Food 4 Less
If you can cook, you can make posole. Its so easy. My Mom's from Oklahoma and she read a recipe in the Fresno, CA newspaper for pork posole verde. We had a leftover pork roast and she made it and it was so good! It was a staple in our house after that whenever she's make a pork roast dinner. The leftovers always ended up in posole the next day!
We ate a lot of nopalitos growing up. We had it in everything since it grew prolific in our backyard. I can still feel the stings of the needles trying to prep them for meals. 😁
I must say the narration by Sergio & Yves was so nice, they definitely love the food they described. I was particularly excited to watch this, as I know I won’t be eating it soon, but may be only if I visit to some city with Mexican restaurant in India. Obviously I wish I visit Mexico. Looks like I am going to enjoy it, if I try, 😊
@@LazzariniSK13 reposting my comment here: have you ever considered using the cactus from prickly pears? They are apparently two different varietes of the same species. They might be common in Spain, as they are in southern Italy!
I agree with you, they look like wonderful guys! Everyone who talks so passionate about their favourite foods always get bonus points in my books 😂❤ I learned so many new Mexican dishes that I didn’t knew. My brother visited Mexico before covid, we have a tradition that he buys me a mug from every trip abroad he makes, I’m kind off a mug collector so to say, although I don’t drink coffee, I use them for soups and teas 😂 My brother gave me a mug from Chichén Itzà and a bottle of Mexican vanilla (THE BEST VANILLA I’VE EVER TASTED!!) I was so sad when I ran out of it…
I am lucky enough to work as a caregiver for a Hispanic family! They feed me well! The spicy chicken tamales are the best I’ve EVER had, elote to die for, beef barbacoa, spicy brown beans with peppers, nopales, choco-flan, fruit smoothies and homemade salsas of every type!!! So good! They tell me of the heart and history that goes into those dishes and they are proud of them -as they should be!!! YUM!!
OMG, molletes is one of my favorite Mexican foods that non-Mexicans usually have never heard of. I'm so glad you got to try it! It's my go-to breakfast when I have pan bolillo and beans at home.
I truly appreciate this video! Finally someone eating REAL Mexican food and not just tacos and quesadillas! BTW that taco you made, mixing a bunch of things up - that is a real taco! ❤
Omg yay you got to try my top 3 favorite Mexican dishes "Chile rellenos, molé, and tres leches" always love recommending them to people who want to try other dishes from my culture ❤️
Beryl, this video made your excited eye go wild lol! I’ve been a chef for longer than I care to admit and I’ve worked with so many amazing Mexican people throughout my career. These dishes are all delicious foods that I learned about from Mexican cooks making Mexican family meals or going out to eat with them.
Mexican cuisine is one favorite. Now I have more dishes to try. I ordered mole once and did not care for the restaurants version. I now know and plan to order it at different restaurant. Also the chorizo dish & other dishes ordered. Sorry I don't remember the names. Thanks guys for your suggestions. Of course without Beryl I would not have learned about these wonderful dishes.
That beer definitely goes best colder than ice with a hot hot bowl of spicy pozole on a cold winters day. Cutting through that spicy rich fatty broth with a sip of the crisp refreshing dark beer is just unmatched
I'm a Mexican living in New Zealand and when I make Red Mexican Rice I use I use 6 ingredients. Oil, Rice, Water, Chicken Stock Powder, Tomato Paste (I sometimes use even though not traditional pizza sauce cause of the extra herbs) and frozen Peas, Corn, and carrots.
Would love to see Spanish dishes to try next! 😍 I’m Spanish and Mexican and this video was really awesome to see more explored about Mexican food because there’s so much more than even what’s shared here. 🤤
i think one thing that make a big difference in mexican cuisine is fresh tortillas you can NOT beat the soft, chewy texture and clean taste when they are being made fresh. yes you could make a decent meal with store bought but i hope any fan of mexican food get to try them fresh at least once so they KNOW. my grandma would make them fresh and we would eat them hot off the comal, just plain sometimes, or with a little butter and salt.
I love this series and the number of times an episode had _inspired_ me to order delivery is definitely tough on my wallet . And while I do love that you are featuring members of your global community, I wonder why you don't often include at least one person living in NYC? I feel they would have more insight on which restaurants are best to order from. It's great that the food are the star of the show, but I feel like this could also be a great chance for you to highlight local ethnic spots that your audience can support. I am guessing that since it is a sponsored deal, you may not be able to do something like that, but I still think consulting a NYer would only give the series even more value.
I just made my first ever batch of pozole for our Independence Day this year (a week ago). It's one of the quintessential Mexican dishes and a very festive one as well, although it's the first time I see it with beans added. All your food looked delicious! The Chile relleno tastes even better when in a taco imho, and the mole is one of our most elegante dishes ever. Thank you for introducing so many people to our amazing cuisine!
My absolute favorite dish that l eat almost daily when lm in Mexico City is chilaquiles verde. I find Mexican food to be very mouth satisfying, if that's a thing. The layers of flavours and varied textures in a single dish is fabulous. Good video. I agree, everyone should try mole sauce. Amazing stuff
I had Nopalitos the first time in Mazatlán and they were combined with sautéed onions, bell peppers and eggs into a scramble. I loved them and you can find a jar on my shelf at all times.
Mole is so very complex. My fiance’s Oaxacan mother makes it very different than my aunt in Zacatecas and both are different from the type my mom makes, but basically you can think of it as Mexican curry
A note on vegetarian options. Make sure that your refried beans are not made with lard, as that is very common. Also, not all cheeses are vegetarian as they use animal rennet, which is an enzyme from an unweaned calf (lamb, kid etc.) stomach.
This is besides the subject but I've had one of those days and seeing the husbands reminded me how this channel embraces everyone and everyone is welcome and we're a nice community of people who love food and sharing and it made me emotional okay
@@characterblub me toooooooo and not just husbands, but everyone! We've seen so many wonderful people from everywhere who present themselves in all sorts of ways, and it's so cool, and also the woman who wasn't comfortable showing her face so we only heard her, it was so neat! Everyone everyone is included I AM EMOTIONAL AGAIN 😭
@@cloverhighfive I can't even count how many times this channel has had me on the verge of tears. Every time I watch one of these I end up going 🥺 at least once
I'm so glad nopales were tried here. I grew up eating nopales. Preparing them from the whole cactus pad is very labor intensive, but buying it in a jar is easy! I like nopales cooked with scrambled eggs or vegan eggs. Yum!
Great selection! All very authentic dishes. Although the beans in the pozole was weird for me as someone from Baja California. I'll say that Mexican cuisine is very regional. When I think of the most authentic meal, I think of carne asada prepared family style with bowls of cabbage, meat, pico de gallo (or salsa bandera as we call it), guacamole, cucumbers, and radishes on the table for everyone to make their own tacos. I'm pretty sure all of Mexico does something similar, but the focus on beef is very much a norteño thing like how seafood is very much a costal thing.
I'm from South Texas so many of my friends are Mexican. My one friend's mom would make traditional turkey and stuffing for Thanksgiving, but would use Mexican spices and seasoning. Dear God, that was delicious!
While I generally love probably every type of Mexican food I've tried, my all-time favorite is Guisado de Puerco, Pork Stew made with Tomatillos, etc. Absolute heaven for me!
Chile Rellenos con arroz rojo y frijoles refritos is one of my favorite meals. I love the queso relleno but my mom prefers carne de res o carne de pollo. Mole is often served at weddings and one of my best friends grandmother would tell me, "Kevin, quiero mole." My response was, "you need to ask your grandson." 🤣🤣 I wish I liked pozole, but I am not a fan of hominy. Sopa de fideo or caldo de res are my favorites.
I was the person who asked for vegetarian food options in the Korean video haha. This is why you’re my favourite food content created beryl, you actually care about your audience and try to be as inclusive as possible. Mexican food looks super good, hope I get to try the authentic stuff one day❤
I’m saying “mmm” with Beryl even though I’m laid up in bed with a bad back, eating animal crackers and shredded pizza cheese with a water chaser. Lol. Awesome video Beryl.
I love the video and the ppl suggesting food. So glad you go for authenticity. I, being a foodie from a Latin American country appreciate that. I absolutely LOVE this video ❤
Excited to see this on my lunch break!!! Update: I want to make all of these things now!!! My maiden name is Hispanic but I didn't get all of these flavors growing up. My dad would get Chile rellenos some times when we went out. He is born and raised in Phoenix AZ so he knows where all the good Mexican food is. Can't wait to see what's next!
About a month ago, I got the opportunity to try out a Thai restaurant in my local neighbourhood. I’d never had Thai food but your video on that inspired me to try. Needless to say, I now have a new fave restaurant when I want a good takeaway (or UberEats cos I’m a wimp at fronting up to a place and butchering meal names). ❤
Love love your show! I have to say my mother made her Napolis in a red chili sauce with tender pork delish! Oh and btw you can get soy chorizo! It’s really good!
In New Mexico when we make chile rellenos we use a Hatch green chile so it has more of a kick than poblano. Posole is a bit different too, as we tend to use pork, and eat it with soft flour tortillas on the side. If you’re a vegetarian you can use Soy chorizo from Trader Joe’s in place of chorizo. We’re not vegetarians, but we love version, and will add to eggs and cheese in a breakfast burrito.
First, I'm SO glad you got Negra Modelo! Mexican beer is so much better than Corona or Dos Equis! And also thank you for talking about how moles can be so different depending on where it comes from. Everyone just thinks, ew, chocolate sauce on meat, but it's more complex than that!
I am not Mexican but I love the country and I have friends over there, a couple of months ago I went to the city and my moms friend made pozole rojo for me. Hands down the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten in my life.
I’m with Omar ! I love his choices…they are my favorites too. I’m from Santa Fe, New Mexico . Every time I go home my first stop is at The Range Cafe to get my Blue Corn Chile Rellenos! The best in the world. Plus my favorite beer is Negra Modelo
My son's mother-in-law (from El Salvador) introduced my family to Tre Leches cake. Our granddaughters love it, and I'm sure our grandson will follow grandpa's lead and eat way more than he should.
There’s a reason mexican food (I grew up in SoCal) is my favorite. Posole is so hearty and flavorful. I love hominy. Love chile rellenos. And tres leches is one of my favorites.
you have all sorts of props and wall decorations for each video. Yet, your place always seem super clean and organized and you're in NYC which is not known for spacious apartments. how do you keep everything so organized? it's amazing
I was hoping to see some food a little less familiar to me but I guess I can't expect that from Mexican restaurants in the US. I was very happy to see some of my favorite dishes however. Pozole/posole! One of my favorite soups but the top for me is caldo de rez. Chile Relleno!! Most of my Mexican friends don't care for it but I could eat it any time. It's also great wrapped in a tortilla and eaten like a burrito! And in case you didn't know, the "breading" is mostly whipped eggs. And Negra Modelo!!! I haven't had one in ages, more frequently drinking Modelo Especial simply because more restaurants have it. And Tres Leche!!!! Always a winner when I make it for friends. I usually swap some of the milk with alcohol (rum, Bailey's, Rumchata, etc.).
The nopal salad is ultimate favorite only because I dont eat meat. I had it in Poland and it was good minus the lime :( Pozole is common in the cold season but every part of Mexico makes it different.
My neighbor was from Mexico back when o was in college. She was the most lovely mama type woman who often fed me when she cooked her dinner. Ahhh. Those were delicious day
My friend made my husband and I a Tres Leches for our anniversary a couple weeks ago and even though I cant eat dairy, it was delicious and totally worth the discomfort. I'm pretty lucky to have an Ensenadan pastry chef as a friend.
I will vouch for chile relleno and mole. Two Mexican dishes that are too complicated to make at home but generations of skilled abuelas have perfected.
Just wanted to say...about a million things! First off, I am not a foodie and I hate to cook. I can't remember how on earth I found your channel, but I've been so hooked by how beautifully you contribute to world unity with your videos through food! I have yet to make a single dish you've tried, but have nevertheless shared elements and recipes from your videos with others and keep trying to remind myself to try one! This episode in particular was so telling because Mexican food was never explored in my household growing up, but that I'm nevertheless now intrigued to try. I also adore your segment to promoting an artist and have yet to not be intrigued by those you've picked...and having developed a silly allergy to any and all earrings, am heavily jealous of ALL of your awesome earrings! No idea if you will read this, but thought that you might like to know that someone who doesn't even super care about food personally has been so affected by your food themed channel! I was also delighted to already know how cool your name was because as a concertina player, one of my favorite albums was called "Chords and Beryls" by Edel Fox. Thanks for being as awesome as emeralds!
Beryl is a Mexican food expert. When she said this wasn't the best mole I've had, I could imagine her sitting at a wood table with an old Mexican grandmother eating mole.
Menudo is a soup/stew made of chickpeas with beef tripe. It's said to be a cure for hangovers. Excellent flavor but some might find the appearance offsetting. I recommend it.
Omg mole is my favorite ever in the world! Over some rice 🤤 my mother’s mole is a little spicy but a tiny bit sweet, my friends always ask when will she be making some and they always take some to-go containers.
I use to travel all the time and Mexican restaurants were everywhere. Every time I tried a new restaurant I would have the Chile Riano dishes. The best chili riano I have had was in Abilene Texas at Miguel’s Mex Tex cafe. The breading was made like fried chicken, crunchy and full of flavor topped in caso.
I must find a place near me that makes chile rellenos; anything stuffed is going to be my instant favorite. I also love these videos, as they help me compile a list of things to order once I get myself in a good spot where I can order out again on a rainy day!
I have that cactus growing in my back yard .. but I’ve never taken the time to prepare it.. I understand you have to really boil it well to get rid of the slimy part that happen with it.. However, I have had friends over who have picked it for themselves and enjoy it.. especially when new young leafs? or those round sections have grown .. I also have prickly pears and those are delicious.. you have to use a leather glove and roll them in the sand to remove the very fine stickers on them.
got this recommended... big thing about chorizo, there is vegan chorizo made of soy and other non-animal ingredients... so yeah, chorizo actually can be a vegan food :) (the 3 big variations of chorizo are pork/beef/soy while chicken chorizo and lamb chorizo are a novelty)
I don't know about anyone else, but when I watch one of your delivery videos, I score myself based on how many of the dishes I've had. I was really happy to see the mole negro, which is a favorite of mine. (Although I don't do shrimp.) I've also had molletes (without chorizo) and pozole at the church my parents attend. (It is mostly hispanic, and services are bilingual.) When they have pozole after church, they make it without chiles, but serve it with a guajillo sauce on the side so that one can have it as spicy as one likes. I like spicy, so I added enough of the guajillo to turn mine from clear to light pink. It was VERY spicy, but very good. Then I looked around, and at the next table there was an elderly Mexican gentleman -- okay, I'm elderly too, I guess, but he was way more elderly -- eating what for all the world looked like tomato soup. As I said, as spicy as one likes.
