We nearly lost our language in Montreal during my grandpa and grandma time in Montreal. My mother was founding member of the PQ. I don’t want under any circumstances for my kid generation to live that kind of nightmare ever. What Legault and his gang are doing is not about the best way. Vin Hill, if instead of Quebec you went to Paris in France, do you think you would still not know french after 3 years of immersion?? This is exactly the point of the Bill 96, how come someone can come live in Quebec and never learn french after so many years? The reason is because in Montreal you can live in a 100% english bubble without the need to learn a single word of french, that is not normal.
Yes, I'm really sorry for you, but you've been living in Québec for three years ans you still cannot speak B2 French. If you don't understand that it's all your fault. There's nothing we can do for you. And maybe it's better for everyone that you leave.
As a French Canadian I find this idiotic. It's time for Québec to stop focusing on forcing the French language and instead start supporting French culture. We have so much more than just the language but they've put all the energy into the language, which is something that naturally evolves with time anyway, and it has overshadowed our actual culture.
Bravo! Thank you for your voice in this!!! Hearing from a French Canadian such as yourself is so important for the rest of us. We, outside of Quebec, looking in are feeling very confused, sad, frustrated and just plain mystified as to why, at a time when the rest of the world seems to be going to shite, we as a Nation would think that breaking us up is a great idea ! Because that's what this bill seems to be heading towards. I agree with your 100%. While language is definitely important, embracing the full culture is THE REAL DEAL!
Agreed the resentment this breeds on both sides is super unhealthy. I was kind of an angry young man and I resented French (and French people in general) so much that I went out of my way to not learn French. If forcing language really worked, we'd all still be using old languages (Latin) spoken by kings... no? Languages, religions, jobs etc are all fluid. People respond to social incentives and keep using what benefits them. This sort of forced mandate seems antiquated.
Absolutely right. I'm franco-ontarienne and I think it's a shame Québec puts all the emphasis on the French language but largely ignores French culture. What a missed opportunity!

Not really. in the beginning the british army tried to eliminate french by deporting acadians. they still speak french in that area of canada. we tried eliminating french in quebec by having english as the main language and forcing them to speak english before bill 101, that didn't work either. So no doesn't really work, you are right.

There is a very closed mindset here in Quebec that predominantly comes from the old generation way of thinking and it is rubbing off on the young Quebec kids they do not deserve that they deserve to have an open mindset and be able to learn whatever language they like and they will still preserve their language and culture, this is nonsense French or English anybody should be outraged by these ridiculous laws.. at least in Ontario they have the respect to put both signs in both languages they don’t force anything on you here the signs needs to be half the size it’s all a joke it’s crazy it needs to stop! the division also.. there’s no reason if you’re living in North America that you don’t know how to speak English and I can assure you a high percentage of this population in Quebec cannot speak basic English and yes I do agree that if you live in Quebec you should be able to speak French as well absolutely.... this bill is pure garbage fueled by hatred and being put up as a disguise for protecting French .. Believe me there is no threat at all just go to any place outside of Montreal anywhere in Quebec and tell me if you think there is a problem with them learning and talking French it’s a joke!
I am French Canadian, fully bilingual and I consider it a cultural richness not a political tool. I have members of my family who do not speak a word of English, so they say, but listen to English songs only and speak a Franglais that is personally annoying ( Hey Bob, check mé break , sont fuckés). Most advocate for the French culture that I know, don't even respect the French they pretend to want to protect. As long as we leave the referendum on Independence away from the discussion, we can all get along fine without Government intervening in out daily lives.
Je vous suggère ce livre : L'invention d'une minorité: les Anglo-Québécois par Josée Legault. Dr. Josée Legault, une des linguistes Canadiens les plus doués.
As far as the purists are concerned they wish to live as they did in the 1600s. They wish to eliminate all non-French influences. I expect they will get what they want and anyone who does not speak french should go somewhere else. Ans they will.
I'm glad to see someone else calling out this weird French colony worship, like, wow, are the conservatives yearning to roll progress back THAT far? What's next, restore a monarchy? Fiefdoms?
@@neoqwerty A friend had to go to from Paris to Montreal for a baning meeting. It was in french and he said he could barely understand most of the meeting. He hired a local secretary to take notes for him and translate them to Parisian French for him. He said even the grammar was convoluted compared to modern Parisian French.
Ontario cater to multiple languages. Quebec went through this years ago. Had to reintroduce English as they ended up with a generation that couldn’t function in the business world. Some immigrant homebodies never learn the language, remain in their ethnic areas. When you bring in large swathes of people they never adapt or comprehend or learn anything about ‘their new country’. You end up with many mini ethnic groups, sticking together which is natural, but they bring their ethnic beliefs, differences and prejudices with them. Quebec made the rest of Canada go bilingual years ago. They should remember that Canada is bilingual, that means two languages. If you get a ticket in Quebec it is usually in French. Everything in the rest of canada is in both languages. French Quebec want us to respect them but they do not respect English Canada. Take the shoddy French/English translations of our ‘highly educated’ prime minister. French/English garbled together, none of which is comprehensive.
The third guy makes so much sense. Who would the Legault government ever think that limiting English education would make Quebec attractive for companies or people? Taxes are too high and when companies have a choice they will locate to Ontario, BC or Alberta rather than put up with restrictive language laws and high taxes. People will do the same.
Rule one of Quebec politicians: THEY LIE. Rule two is they'll make crappy frivolous purchases with their constituents' tax dollars, like that time Pauline Marois called getting her cabinet a 10,000$ silent autoflushing toilet a "work expense". There's a reason Quebec called politicians clowns since the 90's.
Montreal should start petitioning to separate itself from Quebec and become its own province. We have the population and land mass, although we are in a french province but the majority of montrealers are more or less bilingual. We have our own multi-cultural diversity and we are proud of it!
@Gooossey depends which area of downtown your talking about. From Westmount Atwater to McGill is pretty much all English then you have the gay village which is more french
Born in Montreal 1948, left in 1969, tired of FLQ and the French moved too Ontario then Alberta and never want to go back. Wish the frogs had separated. They would have starved without Canada's handout.
I said it before and I’ll say it again , most if not all immigrant specially their kids usually speak English and or French and their native tongue . Where’s the language police for their native tongue ? Education and language specifically , starts at home . Born in mtl , le francais est ma 3e langue Que j’ai appris a l’age de 7 ans en premiere annee. English is my second language . Moj prvi jezik je hrvatski I dobro ga pricam , where’s the Croatian language police helping me keep my mother tongue? Check Kijiji just for fun , half the French adds are majorly misspelled and I’m not talking spelling but sintax . Educate your kids and u won’t need to spend millions if not billions
Laws are always founded on a good idea. I get french speakers should have the right to be served in french in Quebec, but I do not understand why it should be restricting the langage between coworkers. The goal should be to offer the option to be served in french, not to eliminate other langages... Such as the social worker should be able to use the langage of her clients, it just makes perfect sense.
"Laws are always founded on a good idea." No, oh god no........ You really think that? Many laws including this one are not founded on good ideas at all....You are not very bright.
Just one reason I don’t care for Quebec. I refuse to spend any sort of time or money there.. if I go to the east coast I always drive straight threw with no stopping.
Merci pour vos encouragements afin de préserver la langue et la culture ainsi que la civilisation française du Canada vous ne comprenez pas et ne comprendrez jamais malheureusement
The last guy is stupid because he states out of his mouth that he loves it there and stays there regardless so how it is wrong for Quebec to keep it's province exactly as it is and keep the French language just as he's enjoyed?
so..... just throw us out ! why not now ? we tried a couple of times to separate but the rest of canada sends us stupid 'love' bus to convince to stay in the country ... i say it's time we separate ... please convince your local politicians to bring the subject up in meetings, in debates, in public gatherings .... keep alberta in, throw out quebec .... thank you 🙂
@@tiffaniterris2886 Good luck with that. You seem to have some romantic view of the experience but really french Quebeccers hate anything that's not perfect french with a perfect accent. Had a roommate with an Accadian girlfriend from the east coast and they literally would rather speak English to her rather than deal with her accent. There is a reason I speak more Spanish than French despite living twice as long in a French place.
@@GerhardMack Secessionist states keep their borders. That has been the trend around the world in the last 100 years. If you want to start playing that game, Quebec could claim parts of Ontario which are largely French speaking.
Whenever I go down to Quebec, a lot of the people who can speak English just pretend they don’t know. Eventually you’ll find one person who will help you out
Meanwhile The Independent Advisory Committee mandated by the Office of the National Assembly of Quebec on February 16, 2023 stated that Quebec National Assembly members should get a 30% pay raise (base salary will then be $130k), and the premier get another $60k (new salary to be $270k). This will encourage “diversity” and encourage better candidates to run…they will be the highest paid government workers of their kind, while rents rise, and women are told to not wear hijabs, and children are told they can’t pray in private in school…what an insane province. I’d be mad as heck if I was living there with a median salary of $40k.
