My Navy Recruiter in Nashville, TN ended up in my Squadron on board the USS Independence, CVA-62. In our Change of Command Ceremony we also had Promotions where my recruiter was promoted to Chief Petty Office. When I went up to him and introduced myself, the first thing he asked me was "Did I lie to you about anything?" I told him he did not. Chief Lee was a good Sailor and a good Man.

Pensacola! I went to some Elementary school there and then college there. BOTH of my neighbors when I lived there in college were chiefs at the base, (E8 and E7). They used to always try to give me tips and such as they knew I was going to join the military after college. I can see why they are respected, very knowledgeable and still friendly to help others do their best!

Petty Officer- from the age of sail, were considered sailors with some sort of specialty, carpenters, sailmakers etc. the word petty comes from the French "petit" meaning little. So Petty Officers were "little officers" between the ordinary and leading seaman, and the warrant and commissioned officers.

On my Submarine (back in the mid 1980's), we had a "shit hot" Nuclear Electrician's Mate Chief... he made E-7 in 7 years... E-3 upon entry E-4 upon completing "A" School E-5 with STAR re-enlistment after 1 year then nailed E-6 and E-7 advancements on the screws... Then he got busted for Coke possession... and BEAT THE CHARGES in General Court Martial... (How? Nobody knows... maybe an awesome lawyer... but we all knew he was a coke head) I never heard what happened to him after 1987, but I have no doubt that he was probably blocked from ever getting E-8

He probably got out and retired after all that knowing he won't go any higher and undoubtedly pissed people off by beating a court-martial. I'll bet he got E-8 retirement pay after the appropriate appeals.

My best friend is in the Coast Guard Reserves (former active duty) and is currently an E-8 (Senior Chief). He is ranking up to E-9 (Master Chief) in October. I remember helping him study for the E-PME for E-8 while we were working together (law enforcement). He had to pass that just to take the servicewide evaluation. I think the ranking system is pretty similar for the Navy and CG. From what he says E-9 is as high as he can go.

For Airdale (Squadron Type). "Shoes" (and other classifications) may be different but this is my experience: E1-E3 - you are assigned to working parties, first lieutenant, the line shack, Etc. You might end up in your work center and actually working in your rate a year or so after getting to the fleet. If you are a "Sierra Hotel" Plane Captain, they may extend your time in the line shack but it will also come with a great deal of respect with some letters of commendation and/or "Sailor of the Month" recognition. You will stand roving watches (and sometimes duty driver) on your duty days. Life may suck but your overall attitude during this time will either make or break you. E4 - you are put in charge of working parties and if you are that "Sierra Hotel" Plane Captain, they may keep you in the line shack training other plane captains. If you are in your work center, you are knowledgeable but still a learner. You are likely training and mentoring strikers and one may carry your toolbox at times. E4s typically pull Duty Driver and Petty Officer Of the Watch (POOW) on their duty days. E5 - you are the BACKBONE of the maintenance department in a squadron. You will be performing the majority of the critical, heavy aircraft maintenance and people will depend upon you to know your stuff. You are also a Collateral Duty Inspector (CDI) meaning you are signing off on others work. An E5 may find himself or herself in the role of a shift supervisor over more junior E5s and below. You are the main training mentor of junior enlisted assigned to your work center. E5s typically stand duty as the Petty Officer of the Watch (POOW) or Assistant Squadron Duty Officer (ASDO). E6 - You are the Work Center (and possibly the Division) Leading Petty Officer meaning you are likely also the Day Shift W/C Supervisor. As stated, they take the heat for all of the screwups of his or her subordinates. You are now expected to be a Military (in addition to professional) meaning you are accountable for the uniform appearance and grooming standards of your subordinates and are responsible to correct any deficiencies in military bearing and personal conduct. An E6 is a subject matter expert in their rating. They may turn wrenches on occasion but are expected to delegate wherever possible to their subordinates. An E6 provides personal and professional counseling when necessary and writes the evaluations of all his (or her) subordinates. They may work outside of their rating as LPO of the Line Division, Corrosion Control, or A/C Phase. They may be a Quality Assurance Representative (QAR), assigned to the QA Division signing off on "safety of flight" issues. An unlucky E6 may be the person people report to topside to "Pee in a Cup" (HRMO/DAPA). Senior E6s looking to make "Chief" are obviously more political trying to look good before a selection board. the more senior E6s become Duty Section Leaders where they are responsible for the watch bill and mustering of the duty section as required. They may stand ASDO duty as needed but their name shows up on the watch bill less frequently than do the E5s. E7 - You are the Division Chief Petty Officer responsible for all enlisted personnel in your division. You are more of a Military leader than professional. The knowledge of a Chief Petty Officer is much more broad in nature than E6 or below. If you have specific maintenance knowledge and expertise, it was likely acquired as you came up in the ranks and possibly still with the same aircraft platform (F/A-18s, SH-60, Etc.). Most of the technical expertise will be delegated to your First Class (and senior Second Class) Petty Officers. A Chief may no longer be the primary "Go To" technical expert but he will be able to cite "Chapter and Verse" regarding any and everything "4790!" A Chief may be in QA, the Line, or any other division where they need a Chief Petty Officer. Chiefs also hang out in Maintenance Control either assigned or just there to learn. Chiefs train Junior Officers (Branch Officers, Division Officers, Etc.) and advise mid-level officers (LT, LCDR). Chief Petty Officers do not stand rotational duty (Duty sections) as do the E6 and below but may be on rotation as the "Weekend Maintenance Chief" and in some squadrons, may stand duty as the Squadron Duty Officer (SDO). E8 - You are likely nearing retirement and the Navy is offering you a "Star" enticing you to go beyond the 20-year mark. Promotions to E8 and E9 are strictly selection board - no rating exam. They typically require you to serve an additional 2-3 years in order to put on "Senior Chief" and my understanding is that the additional retirement pay makes it well worthwhile. There is a good deal of overlap between Chief and Senior Chief as well as Senior Chief and Master Chief. A Senior Chief may still find himself (or herself) as a "Division LCPO" in a top-heavy command. The senior enlisted in charge of Maintenance/Material Control will usually be a Senior or Master Chief. A Senior Chief may also find him or herself as the "Senior Enlisted" in a command and thus fill the role of a "Command Senior Chief." Aside from the occasional "Squadron Duty Officer" duty (as applicable per command policy), a Senior Chief's watch-standing days are over! Most Senior Chiefs I have known have been pretty chill - even more so than most Chiefs. I have never met a single one who did not like being called "Senior" and I would have loved to have been called such had I stayed in long enough to earn it! E9 - You are now pushing towards the 30-year mark and are pretty much the top-dog wherever you go. Everyone calls you "Master Chief" and it really does not matter what your rating is by this time because it has been years since you have touched a tool anyways! You are likely in one of two places in a squadron - You are either the Maintenance/Material Control Master Chief or you are working up "topside" as the "Command Master Chief" and Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Commanding Officer. You likely received orders into the command specifically for the role of Command Master Chief. I have been in commands where the Command Master Chief was a submariner so an airdale Master Chief might find themselves in a command outside of the aviation community. From this time on, you will serve as Command Master Chief in larger and larger commands including an Aircraft Carrier over the squadron Command Master Chiefs. You may even work your way up to a Fleet or Force Master Chief or possibly Master Chief of the Navy. You're welcome!😎

The term 'petty officer' comes from the French 'petit officier' or 'small officer' which, back in the days before there were chiefs in the navy, were the officers' assistants as the chiefs are now. Hope this helps.

You can be an E3 if you do any JROTC or Sea cadet program. Also they changed the Naval boot camp again making it easier to be promoted in boot camp if you do well physically with the test.

I’m a first year cadet in njrotc, I’ve heard that if you do college rotc you start off an officer, is that true?
@SirHawk2000
@SirHawk2000 5 лет назад
@@loganknowsnoneofyourbusine263 Depends. Anyone who is in the NROTC can choose to enlist instead. If you pass all exams and complete your summer cruises, you will usually commission as an E-1 (Ensign), unless you choose to go to boot camp instead. Anyone who isn't in the NROTC can still be an officer thru OCS (Officer Candidate School) as long as you have at least a Bachelors degree. There are other programs to become an officer but that's the main 2. Others include Seaman To Admiral and the Warrant officer (LDO) Program.

P.O., the Petty Officer can trace the title back to the old French word, petit meaning something small. The direct English language word is "petite". So, in reality it should be "petite officer". Meaning a smaller officer.

I went thru boot camp as a E1. I sent for my college transcripts and had them entered into my records. 2 years of technical school after high school. So I stayed as a E1 until I got to my first permanent command where like magic I made E3 and best of all I got back pay from the first day. Those were the days where you stood in the payline and got cash on the mess decks. So everybody saw me get over a thousand dollars cash in my hand so I was popular . So I made friends with a big black guy a big white guy and Big filipino. They came in handy a month later when it was time to collect the 20 for 25 ect. When the XO hit me up one month for a mortage payment loan I decided that I was too big for my britches. And then I went to A school. :)

Do you know the difference between an E-9 Marine Sergeant who thinks he's God and an E-9 Navy Chief? The E-9 Navy Chief knows he's God.
